Seven Questions with Alfonso Ribeiro

LA has a diverse cast of characters. Whether it's the characters with stirring stories or interesting occupations or the people who are just simply characters, this town has them all. In an effort to get to know some of those characters a little better, we've created "Seven Questions with..." If you have a suggestion for a future Seven Questions subject send us an email.

National Geographic’s 5th Annual All Roads Film Festival begins tonight and lasts though Sunday at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. It’s a showcase of films from around the world, with a focus on stories from indigenous and underrepresented minority cultures. During the festival, there’ll be music performances, art and, of course, film screenings.

We're well into Shark Week 2008! Last night was a lot of fun and there's more to come tonight, I've highlighted the "Greenland Shark Quest" below as the one to watch. If TV sharks aren't enough, of course Discovery Channel's Shark Week website has a bunch of news, scientific info, and games all tied into Shark Week - my fave is "Go Shark Yourself" which is creepy gross and fun at the same time. Once you've exhausted the resources of the Discovery Channel, don't forget the old standby (and incredible resource) called National Geographic, which also has a website dedicated to sharks: tons and tons of cool pics, a shark attack survival guide, and videos including this insane one of a giant octopus vs. a shark! I don't think I've written the word "shark" this many times in one sitting before.

For twenty-four hours starting tomorrow at noon, 120 scientists, 1,400 LAUSD students and community members will embark on the 2nd National Geographic BioBlitz in the Santa Monica Mountains Recreation Area (though some say it's essentially a National Park), which stretches from the ocean to Cahuenga Pass at the 101 Freeway. Together they will comb the area, as well as Griffith Park, observing and recording as many plant and animal species as possible in 24 hours. Think of it as part scientific endeavor, part festival and part outdoor classroom.

Now that the writers' strike is over and it's full-steam ahead with the Oscars, you can bet that just about every TV channel is going to dogpile on the gala event. Yeah, the Grammys went ahead without interference but the Grammys are nothing compared to the Oscars. E! and CNN already have several shows lined up (look for Oscar host, Jon Stewart, on Larry King this Wednesday night) ready to tackle the exciting topics of: what will be in the gift bags? Who is Prince going to have perform at his Oscar bash? Where do the stars detox before and after the Oscars? etc.

Hop in your time machine and set the dial back sixty years to December 1947 and the pages of National Geographic magazine. Holiday shopping back then was just as difficult as it is now, especially when you've got people on your list who are hard to buy for. So what's left to get them except this "All in One" trailer that makes the ideal home at the beach, in the desert, or in the...

Tonight, Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel presents a story close to home at 9:00 p.m. We just watched a screener and it was a joy. A family drops off a Dalmatian off at Fire Station 29 on Wilshire Blvd. and with good intentions, the firemen of the station took the 3-month-old puppy in. Like, oh my god, so cute! But incredibly wild and unruly. Appropriately named Wilshire, the hyperactive pup took over...

In the LA-based movie Collateral, Max (played by Jamie Foxx) had only one way of taking a vacation: vicariously, through a photo of a tropical island in his taxi cab sun visor. Now, in two weeks, Max will have another choice. From National Geographic's All Roads Film Project comes (bet you can't guess it) the All Roads Film Festival. Los Angeles is the first stop of this traveling Film Festival, which goes to various...
