If you were at LA Live on Halloween night, whether to see the Michael Jackson concert-documentary film This is It or just enjoy the evening out, you may have thought for a moment you'd stumbled onto the set of a horror film or a cemetery in full uproar thanks to the assembled dancers participating in yet another dance-along to the late pop icon's mega hit. Just one week earlier a record-breaking 22,923 people danced in 32 countries as part of the Thrill the World annual event; some of those performers were back among the undead to entertain the crowd at the Clippers game Saturday night.

New York-based As Tall as Lions opened for Mutemath last night at Club Nokia at LA Live. After chatting with lead singer and guitarist Dan Nigro last week, it was a treat to see the band dive headlong with gusto into their 45-minute set which showcased the best of their latest full-length release, You Can't Take it With You, and one indulgence into the back catalog (the wonderfully haunting "Ghost of York" from their 2006 self-titled release).

It was an amazing night for Los Angeles. The Dodgers won, the Angels won and Gustavo Dudamel with the LA Philharmonic dominated Walt Disney Concert Hall, winning over audiences and signaling the start of an amazing season for classical music.

LAist Interview: Dan Nigro from As Tall as Lions

In 2001, Dan Nigro joined up with some friends from high school and did what surely plenty of young people do in Long Island, New York: They formed a band. It would be glib to say "And the rest is history!" since As Tall as Lions is one hell of a hard-working quartet; they've just kicked off a tour in support of their August full-length release, You Can't Take it With You (Triple Crown Records), serving as support for Mutemath, and you can see them at Club Nokia this Saturday. This tour follows their summer tour with Dredg and Rx Bandits, and by late November through the end of the year they'll be touring in the US with Minus the Bear and in the UK with Frightened Rabbit and Athlete.

If there was one thing to say about Saturday night's concert at the Hollywood Bowl, which was 28-year-old Gustavo Dudamel's premiere as its conductor and music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, is that it brought excited crowds out from all walks of life.

Ford Amphitheater Welcomes LA Vida Music Festival

September 15th is a special day for many Latin Americans that call L.A. home. On that fateful day in 1821, the Spanish were told they were no longer welcome in Central America. Various other countries, including Mexico, followed suit in the days that followed and today, that call to Independence is widely celebrated throughout the L.A. area.

Sold Out in Minutes, Conductor's Debut at Hollywood Bowl Will be Free to View Online

It's likely never that the Los Angeles Philharmonic has seen so much crazy attention. But it's rare to see a 28-year-old take the helm of one the world's most notable symphony orchestras. Gustavo Dudamel is one of the most energetic, loving and passionate people you will see in this city and he's expected to bring great things to Los Angeles. His debut as a conductor will be a free performance on October 3rd at the Hollywood Bowl. Free tickets went within minutes and scalpers were trying sell them for $1,600.

Fun on the Frugal Side: Free L.A.

It's your day off. You're uninspired and under-funded (aka bored and broke). "But I live in Los Angeles!" you remind yourself. "There's got to be something I can do that won't break the bank." Art, music, museums, theatre, workshops, gardens, and more always seem to come with a price tag, unless you're totally in the know. Well, it's not too complicated to file yourself under the in-the-know column. Free L.A. is a publication that you can keep on your bookshelf to use when you need low-cost fun on the fly, or hand off to those out-of-town couch surfers you're hosting who would otherwise spend their vacation days fondling your remote control and eating you out of house and home.

The trio Lady Danville (Michael Garner, Dan Chang and Matthew Frankel) took to the stage for an early set at Hotel Cafe on Tuesday night to solidly appreciative and collegial crowd. In an effort to get to know some of those characters a little better, we've created "Seven Questions with..." If you have a suggestion for a future Seven Questions subject send us an email.

If you like music, you're going to see a lot of familiar faces seen in this trailer for East of Sunset, which has no set release date yet. We don't believe that West Hollywood's Sunset Strip is totally dead (it's been making a nice comeback over the past year), but we can't wait to see this flick, which is still in post-production with Thrillhouse Productions (h/t web in front).
