SuperClásico - Playoff Edition

What a memorable year it has been for L.A. area soccer fans. It all started back in February with the will he/won't he? (stay in Italy) saga of David Beckham. Attention would once again be drawn to him upon his return to MLS in July, but in between, Chivas USA and the Galaxy were busy making their own headlines.

Soccer is sometimes characterized as a cruel sport, not because it is a violent sport, but instead, its cruelty in its administration of justice on the field. It is perhaps the most democratic of team sports, where on any given day, the highest ranked team in the World could lose to the lowest ranked one, and conversely, the most dominant team on the field doesn't always win. It is highly unforgiving of mistakes, perhaps more so than any other team sport. It has been an exciting weekend of Major League Soccer action. Various teams throughout the league battled it out last night for a spot in the playoffs. Only one spot remains contested and the team that will fill it will be determined later today.

Major League Soccer ends its 13th regular season this weekend with both of L.A.'s teams at opposing ends of the success spectrum.

Donovan coming to the Galaxy is akin to the Lakers signing Shaq or the Angels signing Vlad Guerrero. Donovan might the best American soccer player, having led Team USA to the quarterfinals of the 2002 World Cup, and single-handedly led the San Jose Earthquakes to two MLS Cup titles. At 23, the best is yet to come.

Guess being in first place wasn't good enough.
