LAPD Detectives are hoping witnesses will come forward with information about a shooting that took place in broad daylight at 2:35 Sunday afternoon near the busy intersection of South La Brea Avenue and Olympic Boulevard, according to a press release. The incident took place as follows:

18-year-old Juan Segura was walking along the sidewalk in the 1000 block of South La Brea Avenue when a car pulled alongside of him and his friend and at least one of the car’s occupants opened fire on them. Segura was hit by the gunfire and collapsed on the sidewalk. He was transported to a local hospital by Los Angeles City Fire Department personnel and pronounced dead a short time later. Segura’s friend was not injured.

Because of the heavy traffic typical of the area, detectives believe there may have been witnesses to the crime, and are encouraging them to come forward to help piece together the case. If The Cottage’s proximity to Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles and Oki’s Dog is a deterrent rather than a boon, then I would caution you against setting foot in this unpolished gem of a dive bar. If, however, you are one of the elite few who crave trans fats and public humiliation in equal measure, then where the hell have you been, soul mate? Pull up a stool, plug that frown with a Miller High Life and prepare to be awed by the breadth of the bar’s song selection, the enthusiasm of the crowd and the lenience of the conspicuously posted “No dancing” policy.

Are you so over cupcakes? Too sweet for you? You may want to give bundt cakes a try. Stop laughing. We tried them at the newish bakery, Kiss My Bundt, in Midcity and were pleasantly surprised because 1) they are available in teeny tiny cupcake-size bundts rather than not-so-cute bundt cake slices, 2) they aren't uber sweet, making them a perfect coffee complement and 3) the small bundts are pleasantly cheaper than most cupcakes out there.

In, er, celebration of its anointment as the real-life stand-in for the new West Bev High kids' hangout, Kokomo Cafe will be serving some of its Peach Pit/90210-inspired specials for free on Tuesday, September 2 (the day the teen soap opera premieres on the CW) from 2 to 4pm. Specials include: Leggo My Eggold -- a Belgium waffle with two eggs and bacon; Mr. Wilson Burger -- double beef burger with cheddar and bacon; and Nat Your Average Smoothie: made with peach ice cream, of course.
