There's a ton of great stuff going on in LA tonight, but it's going to cost you an arm and a leg to get in. First and foremost, there's the Carl Wilson Foundation 10 Year Anniversary Tribute Concert & Fundraiser featuring surf rock legend Dick Dale and Beach Boys front man Brian Wilson. The ginormous Gibson Ampitheatre will be bouncing to R&B mainstays Mary J. Blige and our personal guilty pleasure, Robin Thicke. You've got a lot of money and foresight if you're planning on going to one of the aforementioned shows. And, quite honestly, we've only got so much of both. So we shelled out thirty bucks a month in advance for the opening night of Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird's two-date stint at Largo at the Coronet. If you don't have tickets, then do whatever it takes to get in. It'll be the most intimate, mind-blowing experience of your life.

We're four months out from the official start of the 2008 Hollywood Bowl Season and the schedule is nearly complete. Single tickets won't go on sale for a couple months but the Bowl is offering 16 different series packages, each containing 3-5 genre-specific performances.
Back in 1996, Mary J. Blige provided vocals to the hook of "Can't Knock the Hustle," the second single off of Jay-Z's debut album, Reasonable Doubt. 12 years, 12 Grammys and 70 million records sold later, Jigga Man and MJB are back at it again, co-headlining 25 shows across North America.
The announcement that Tom Petty will play the halftime show at this year’s biggest football game got me thinking about those of the recent past. It seems like only yesterday that men across America froze their Tivo to catch a glimpse of Janet Jackson’s nipple ring during the Super Bowl XXXVIII performance. This notorious halftime show also featured Kid Rock wearing the American flag as a shirt and P. Diddy and Nelly flanked by scantily...

What did you miss at the Grammys last night? Lionel Richie sang "Hello," (sans clay bust) and it was like warm honey. That's what you missed. I'd like to put my vote in now for a fierce Lionel Richie comeback. Also, The Police policed, Chris Rock made a funny about RHCP with their jocks in socks before JT ever put his in a box, Christina Aguilera sang her guts up on a James Brown...

Say it with me… Mary J Blige… Doesn’t it just roll off your tongue with a perfect cadence? Clearly it does to the nominating committee of the 49th annual Grammy Awards. Miss Dancerie is up for 8 golden gramophones, Roxy sweethearts RHCP are nominated for 6 awards, JT is hoping to bring sexy back, Bob Dylan probably doesn’t give a shit that "Modern Times" was passed over for Album of the Year, and I...
The dad sings, the cute little daughter plays drums, and the mom clicks the slide show. Perfectly sweet novelty band way too good for our times. They wear thriftstore costumes, they make songs to the slides that they find or receive, they support dad who used to be in a band, they put theatre back into rock. They sound like the Violent Femmes minus the violence. This has been the summer of the little...

LAist would like to admit we were wrong: Tonight, we taped Lost and ended up watching the finale of American Idol -- all two hours and three minutes of it. We got sucked in during the first hour and needed to watch the show to to its cheesy, glorious conclusion with Katharine McPhee and Taylor Hicks singing "I've Had the Time of My Life" from Dirty Dancing. Oh yes, and then Taylor being crowned king at 9:58 PM. Finally.
With all the hoopla surrounding this weekend’s Coachella Festival, LAist almost forgot to mention another upcoming music fest: 102.7 KIIS-FM’s Wango Tango on Sat., May 6 at the IrvineVerizon Wireless Amphitheatre. Now, we usually laugh at the lineup – think Hilary Duff and Jessica Simpson – but when we checked out this year’s schedule, we were kinda impressed.
The Beatles The Capitol Albums Vol. 2 (Capitol) – Four disc collection of the American versions of the early albums (The Early Beatles, Beatles VI, Help and Rubber Soul) in both stereo and mono. A tempting purchase, but unless you’re a completist it’s tough to justify.
Sly Stone gets on stage for the first time in 19 years. That made the Grammy Awards worth watching.
