Earlier this month, the Rock 'N Roll Summer Circus took place at The Echoplex, hosted by Eli Chartkoff from The Monolators with main stage performances by Marvelous Toy, The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra, Fol Chen, and The Henry Clay People as well as sideshows by the Natural Disasters, Downtown/Union, The Damselles, Les Blanks, and Roadside Graves.

              

Last month, local art-rockers Fol Chen dropped by KCRW in Santa Monica for an in-studio performance and interview on hosted by Jason Bentley.

Tonight, as always, local multi-instrumentalist/producer extraordinaire Jon Brion (LAist Interview, #2, Review) will be jamming with friends at the Largo at the Coronet. Austin-based theremin-crazed, indietronica outfit the Octopus Project are poised to grace the Troubadour. And, lastly, Highland Park's own deep crooner Crooked Cowboy & the Freshwater Indians will be performing at the Unknown Theatre. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Echoplex to catch the first Rock and Roll Circus. Local favorites the Henry Clay People, Fol Chen, the Flying Tourbillon Orchestra and Marvelous Toy are all slated to grace the stage, as well as a handful of other LAist favorites playing acoustic sets in the interim.

Tonight legendary Portland-based Pavement front man Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks will be performing at the Echoplex. LA-by-way-of-Tulsa folk rock singer-songwriter AM is poised to grace the Hotel Café. And, lastly, local indie folk outfit Marvelous Toy will be performing with Highland Park's own experimental rockers Seasons at Echo Curio. But we strongly suggest heading over to Lot 613 in Downtown to catch LAist favorites, Portland-based Italo disco act Glass Candy.

Tonight the Music Tapes, a NY-based experimental indie-pop project of Elephant Six member Julian Koster, will be performing at the Echoplex. LA's own indie rockers Saint Motel (LAist Interview) are slated to rock Spaceland. And, lastly, local country troubadour Mike Stinson will be headlining an early show at the Echo. But we strongly recommend heading over to All Star Lanes in Eagle Rock to catch the Flying Tourbillon Orchestra (LAist Review, #2). LAist favorites Marvelous Toy, Radars to the Sky (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4) and Death to Anders (LAist Review) are poised to kick off the show.

Tonight 17-year-old Australian singer-songwriter sensation Gabriella Cilmi will be performing at the Hotel Café. English psych rocker Pop Levi will be rocking out at the Echoplex for 826LA's Tiny Vaudeville. And all three free Monday Night Residencies, which have simply dominated Silver Lake and Echo Park for the past month, will be coming to a conclusion. Local singer-songwriter Rocco Deluca (LAist Interview, Review) is slated to play his final show at Spaceland with LAist favorites Marvelous Toy. Echo Park's own alt-rockers Olin & the Moon (LAist Interview) will be concluding their stint at the Silver Lake Lounge with Evan Way (of the Parson Red Heads) and Taylor Goldsmith (of Dawes). But we insist that you head over to the Echo to catch Robert Francis (LAist Interview, Review), who will be closing up shop with Austin-based folk rockers Peter and the Wolf.

                                   

New Year's Eve was a raucous, booze-filled celebration at Spaceland (MySpace) in Silver Lake, with triple headliners The Happy Hollows (MySpace), The Pity Party (MySpace), and The Henry Clay People (MySpace) -- all of whom have been previously mentioned here -- kicking off 2009 with a show that will undoubtedly wind up on many "Best Of" lists at the end of this year.
