USC Trojans defeat #15(Coach)/#16(AP) Arizona State Sun Devils 61-49. Defense wins games, and that was more than evident in this game. USC's Daniel Hackett held ASU standout James Harden to only four points scored on free throws, much lower than his 23.1 points per game average. Harden missed all eight field goal attempts. USC started slow scoring only 19 points in the first half, but they made up for it in the second half with 42 points.

After many "sleepless nights", Mark Sanchez officially declared himself eligible for the NFL draft this spring. "It is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to this university," he said in a teary news conference at Heritage Hall this morning. In his only year as a starter, he racked up a 65.8% completion percentage for 3,207 yards, 34 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. According to the draft gurus, Sanchez should be a first round pick.
San Antonio Spurs defeat LA Lakers 112-111. What a remarkable game! The game was close throughout, although the Spurs did manage to take an 11 point lead in the fourth quarter. The Lakers led by Kobe Bryant came storming back to eventually take a one point lead. Now for the "naught". After Kobe sinks a three pointer to get the 111-109 lead Roger Mason receives the inbound pass, fakes out Derek Fisher causing Fisher to foul Mason just as his off-balance shot goes through the net with 10 seconds on the clock. Mason makes his free throw, one point lead. Kobe takes the ball down the court and passes to Trevor Ariza at the top of the arc who drives to the paint, trips and gets called for the travel with 0.8 seconds left. Game over. Much kudos goes to Spero Dedes and Mychal Thompson on the radio call. They do a great job broadcasting games, and this game was no different.
Colorado Rockies defeat LA Dodgers 4-3. Impatient hitting, bad bullpen and awful defense doesn't help any team to win games. On the Kamenetzky Brother's Purple, Gold and Blue podcast Wednesday morning, I said the Dodgers have to be wary about a tired bullpen. The bullpen has been making games more interesting than they needed to be lately, and it will be cause for concern if they continue to falter down the stretch. What more can be said about this game?
LA Dodgers defeat Philadelphia Phillies 8-6. The Dodgers were lucky to have a big lead going into the bottom of the ninth or these words would be talking about the Dodgers third consecutive game lost in the ninth inning. It seemed like the Dodgers had finally learned that one Manny an entire team does not make, but that ninth inning almost undid things. Jonathan Broxton gave up three hits and two earned runs in that ninth inning but got out of the jam when Ryan Howard hit a grounder weakly to second. Nomar Garciaparra will be back in the lineup after his 50th trip on the DL. The question now is who goes down? It's starting to sound like Andruw Jones might go on the DL. Maybe.
With so much going on in the world of sports right now with the Olympics, baseball, USC injuries and all, here's a list of things to keep an eye on.
USC quarterback Mark Sanchez suffered a dislocated left knee and will be out indefinitely. There was no ligament damage. Click here for additional information and a first-hand account.
Trojan's starting quarterback Mark Sanchez was carted off the field in practice today after injuring his left knee during stretching exercises. No word yet on the extent of the injury. Backup Mitch Mustain was seen taking the majority of the snaps at practice.
LA Lakers defeat Sacramento Kings 124-101. No tacos for the fans, but joy still rang out with the Lakers clinching the #1 seed in the Western Conference for the first time since the 1999-2000 season. If anyone predicted this 57-25 season after the chaos of last summer that simmered through training camp, they are liars. It's amazing what the emergence of Andrew Bynum, Lamar Odom, the bench and the Pau Gasol heist can do to a team. The Lakers now face either the Denver Nuggets or the Dallas Mavericks in the first round.
Cigar-smoking right-wing nutjob Rush Limbaugh, the former Oxycontin addict, has been arrested in West Palm Beach, Florida for prescription drug fraud. According to the AP, authorities discovered he'd gotten 2,000 painkillers in 6 months, prescribed by 4 doctors. That is, by our count, more than 10 pills per day. Limbaugh was released on $3,000 bail — how much Oxycontin would that buy?
But while USC can always switch off between a LenDale White and a Reggie Bush, or rotate linemen in and out, quarterback is not a position so easily split up. As Leinart shines in the spotlight, John David Booty, Rocky Hinds, and Mark Sanchez wait eager and ready.
