Forget medical marijuana storefronts, the feds have found a new kind of place to storm into -- museums. Today, four Southern California museums, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Bowers Museum of Cultural Art in Santa Ana, the Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena and the Mingei International Museum in San Diego, were raided in an attempt to bust an "alleged illegal smuggling of Southeast Asian and Native American artifacts."

The search warrants, which were executed shortly after 7:30 a.m., gave agents the authority to search the museum's galleries, storage areas offices and computers. The targets of the investigation are Robert Olson, an alleged art smuggler, and Jonathan Markell, the owner of Silk Roads Gallery in Los Angeles, which also was raided Thursday.

Picasso. Giacometti. Kandinsky. Klee. Brancusi. So begins a list of 20th century artists whose works are part of the largest single donation to LACMA in over 40 years. Private LA art collectors Henri Lazarof, a composer, and his wife Janice, a daughter of the late S. Mark Taper, gave 130 paintings, sculptures, and other modernist works to LACMA this week. The gift is valued at an estimated $100 million plus according to the LA Times....

In conjunction with the exhibition , the Los Angeles County Museum of Art will be screening a series of selected classics of Latin American cinema this weekend. Best of all, thanks to a generous grant from the Getty Foundation, all of these screenings are 100% FREE! Make the trip to the LACMA this weekend and enjoy films rarely seen on the big screen in this country. Two of the screenings will feature interviews and an audience Q&A with the filmmakers. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is doing something super cool right now, they're giving away their Magritte and Friends show to everyone 17 and under. It's so sweet they feel shy about talking about it, so we will help them. According to ArtsJournal, to get the free admission the minors should simply go to the box office. LACMA Magritte curator Stephanie Barron emailed to say that Magritte-and-friends is free for children 17...

It's being touted as "the largest photographic art exhibition in the United States" and it's happening in Santa Monica at the end of this week. It's photo la 2006, where photography from the 19th Century to current contemporary photos and photo-based art will be showcased, and in some instances, be available for purchase. This is the 15th year of this large-scaled event, and 2006 brings representative works from over 70 of the world's premiere galleries and exhibitors. Things get going on Thursday with the Opening Night cocktail reception, hosted by LA-centric conservancy and photography advocate Diane Keaton, who has edited and created several photography books during her career, including Local News, a collection culled from the LA Herald-Express archives. We'll be there to see if we can rub some elbows with Ms. Keaton, and you can be, too; tickets to the Opening reception are $50, and benefit the Photographic Arts Council of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The rest of the event includes a lecture and seminar series, as well as public exhibition viewing hours. The scoop: Exhibition hours are Friday, January 20 and Saturday, January 21, noon to 7p.m. and Sunday, January 22, noon to 6p.m. Tickets are $20 for a one-day pass (includes catalog). Lectures are $10 per person, per speaking engagement and onsite collecting seminars are $80 (includes weekend pass to fair and catalog). Student discounts for lectures and the fair are available with valid I.D.
