Thornton Scores Hat Trick, Donovan Adds to Galaxy Tally

Chivas USA 'keeper Zach Thornton is going to need to make more room on his mantel. On Monday, the veteran 'keeper was named to the 2009 MLS Best XI roster following a stellar campaign in which he registered a personal best Goals Against Average (GAA) of 0.87. His league best GAA was well complemented by the 12 shutouts he amassed throughout the season -- also tops in MLS. Thornton first earned the award in 1998 when he helped the Chicago Fire win the MLS Cup.

Beckham Shines as Galaxy Return to MLS Cup Final

Galaxy midfielder David Beckham put in a strong performance to help the blue-and-gold capture the Western Conference title for a sixth time in club history and the first since 2002. Veteran defender Gregg Berhalter and team captain Landon Donovan provided all the scoring on the night, literally at the eleventh hour, to take a 2 - 0 victory over the visiting Houston Dynamo.

Nats in Must Win Situation

Things are quiet down at the Home Depot Center this weekend. Both Chivas USA and the Galaxy have a rare, simultaneous week off from MLS action, but there is plenty of World Cup Qualifying action going on to keep soccer fans entertained.

Chivas USA in Big Apple, Galaxy Hosts Seattle

Tuesday morning, as Chivas USA players prepared to return to the practice field, midfielder Sacha Kljestan tweeted "back to training... gotta get this season back on the right track." Kljestan's succinct message accurately summarizes the red-and-white's current situation.

Galaxy Win, Chivas USA Routed

Landon Donovan and Jovan Kirovski each scored a goal for the Galaxy en route to a 2 - 1 victory over New England Revolution, while Chivas USA continues to struggle and gets routed 4 - 0 at the Colorado Rapids. The Galaxy pressured the New England Revolution defense from early on and quickly took control of the game at Gillette Stadium. The increasing pressure on the Revolution defense led to some errors in the back line and it wasn't long before the blue-and-gold got some quality shots on goal.

Galaxy Hold On For A Point, Nats Take On Mexico

Galaxy forward Landon Donovan scored his 8th goal of the season at the 33rd minute as the blue-and-gold played to a draw against the Kansas City Wizars last night. Kansas City had taken the lead at the 26th minute when forward Claudio Lopez picked up the ball at the center circle and sent a long arching shot towards the Galaxy goal. Galaxy 'keeper Donovan Ricketts was caught off his line and despite his desperate attempts to recover

Donovan, Galaxy Embrace Matador Role

Sunday Sports Swamp

Here's where I'll lay down the stories that were missed throughout the week. It's not to say these stories are insignificant. I just missed them. Another LA sports feud - We've witnessed the Shaq-Kobe-Phil feud and the subsequent implosion. Now we have the Becks-Landon feud. In SI writer Grant Wahl's new book The Beckham Experiment, Landon Donovan aired his grievances to Wahl about David Beckham.

Galaxy, Chivas USA Looking for Wins

Summer is almost upon us and that means two things: warm weather and the race to the MLS playoffs is about to start. Entering the 12th week of the 2009 campaign, a couple of interesting and familiar trends are starting to surface.

Chivas USA, Galaxy Extend Undefeated Runs

Galaxy, Chivas USA Victorious

Familiar Problems Haunt Galaxy

The Galaxy battled back from an early deficit against the Colorado Rapids last night, but were unable to keep it together, losing by a score of 3 - 2 at the Home Depot Center.

Women's Professional Soccer Returns

A little over 5 years since the first attempt at a women's soccer league -- WUSA -- failed to take hold in the States, a new attempt at making it a permanent fixture on the American sports scene will commence. The new Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) league begins play at the Home Depot Center this afternoon and will feature Los Angeles Sol and D.C. Freedom in its inaugural match.

By month's end, all three of L.A.'s professional soccer teams will have begun their respective journeys into a new soccer season.

Big Year Ahead for International/Local Soccer

We are barely 10 days into the new year and the Home Depot Center is already teeming with action.

Soccer is sometimes characterized as a cruel sport, not because it is a violent sport, but instead, its cruelty in its administration of justice on the field. It is perhaps the most democratic of team sports, where on any given day, the highest ranked team in the World could lose to the lowest ranked one, and conversely, the most dominant team on the field doesn't always win. It is highly unforgiving of mistakes, perhaps more so than any other team sport. In many ways, it is this unknown that excites spectators, causing great excitement when the forces of the soccer world behave as they should as much as when they don't, especially in championship games.

The 2008 MLS season is coming to a close. On Thursday, Columbus advanced to the MLS Cup Final for the first time in franchise history with a 2 - 1 victory over Chicago. Columbus' opponent for the MLS Cup Final to be played at the Home Depot Center on November 23rd will be determined tonight when Real Salt Lake and New York face off.

For a third year in a row, Galaxy fans are left to ponder what could have been while they watch other MLS teams fight it out for a ticket to MLS Cup at the Home Depot Center on November 23rd.

Gillette Stadium in Foxboro has not been kind to the Galaxy over the years. Last night's visit couldn't have come at a worse time given the slump in which the team has found itself for the last couple of months. However, last night's performance against New England Revolution seemed to be lacking many of the problems from past visits.

Saturday's Galaxy match versus New York Red Bulls was the beginning of what will arguably be the toughest part of their schedule this season. The blue-and-gold have embarked on their longest road trip of the year and will not play in the friendly confines of the Home Depot Center until August 21 when the Chicago Fire pay a visit. The timing could not be any worse for the Galaxy. Notoriously bad on the road, the team has also failed to win in over a month and slipped to second place in the conference standings with 2 conference rivals nipping at their heels. They will need to find a way to win on the road or else they might find themselves doing some last minute scrambling to desperately try to make the playoffs.

Almost exactly three years ago, an excited Galaxy team ran onto the field in Texas to celebrate a victory over FC Dallas. The manner in which the team celebrated could have easily lead one to believe they had just won a hard fought championship after many years of shortcomings, or the like. However, it was merely a mid-season regular season victory.

It was a night of familiar storylines at last night's Galaxy game.

It was a beautiful night for soccer in Carson last night.

Just two minutes into Saturday's match against the Houston Dynamo, it seemed as though the Galaxy were destined to repeat some of the mistakes from last Sunday or completely dismantle the Dynamo.

The Los Angeles Galaxy wrapped a 3-0 win in Shanghai on Wednesday night (yup -- big time difference, folks!) thanks to a hat trick by Carlos Ruiz. Shanghaiist, our sister site, has been covering Beckhamania and has great analysis of the match against Shanghai East Asia Hong Kong United (it's unclear at this time if that fits on a jersey). In fact, they've got a lot more insight than, say, ESPN's Soccernet.

Chivas 3, Real Salt Lake 2 - By taking advantage of last-place Salt Lake on Saturday, Chivas USA also took sole possession of first place in the West. Who's the best team in LA? Hmmmm. Galaxy 2, Dynamo 1 - Los Angeles' other team responded in the playoff chase by picking up a victory on Sunday. The Galacticos continue to cause sellouts on the road, with over 30,000 attending in Houston. David Beckham remained on...
