Seven Questions with Kenan Bell, Teacher by Day/Rapper by Night

When Kenan Bell isn't in the classroom of a local Montessori school teaching youngsters language arts, he's on stage schooling crowds with his own unique brand of hip-hop that blends indie-rock with electronica, a style URB called "his very own genre of nu-gaze, emo-hip-hop." In March, the La Crescenta native put on full display his eclectic musical taste and range when he dropped the “Good News: The Mix-Tape,” which features remixes of songs by artists as wide-ranging as Pink Floyd, Lily Allen, Gang Gang Dance, Jose Gonzalez, Peter, Bjorn & John, Duran Duran, and Neil Diamond. Yes, you read that right, Neil Diamond.

Last Friday when A-Trak and Kid Sister played at New York City's Natural History Museum, Kanye West made a surprise visit. Neither Flavorpill or the Natural History Museum list Kanye for tonight's version of the NYC event, First Friday, but rumors are afloat, as they're bound to happen. Nevertheless, the evening looks to be killer anyway.

Two highly recommended Hip-Hop shows take place tonight. Experience the powerful Gospel of Hip-Hop with KRS ONE at The Roxy or explore some electronic Hip-Hop with Sole and the Skyrider Band. And we mean no disrespect to Peanut Butter Wolf who is playing at El Rey with Chromeo, but we know for sure that show is sold out (scalp away!). The Troubadour has some jazz fusion rock going on (MP3s after the jump) and you can find straight ahead jazz at UCLA.

I feel at home at hip hop shows. I am in my element. I am around people who love the same kind of music I love. This past Wednesday night, however, for the first time in my show-going life I was at a hip hop show as an outsider. Nerdcore rap was something that I had only vaguely heard of, all I knew of it was rap with a whole lot of references to...

Word is bond! When the state of hip-hop is in crisis with commercialized lyrics, unappreciative emcees, and NAS’ statement that hip-hop is dead, it becomes hard to focus on what is real hip-hop and what is not. Every so often an emcees will reemerge to enlighten the world of all that is pure and true, and this time around the teacha is back. KRS-ONE is back with his 15th album entitled Hip-Hip Lives, teaming up...

If we could split ourselves in two we'd be at both Spaceland AND the Troubadour tonight but one Gossip does not equal three awesome bands. Yet. The Yardbirds circa 1967 Steve Vai and Jerry Cantrell are the only official guitarists listed for this Yardbirds "reunion", but don't be surprised if other legends decide to sit in with original drummer, Jim McCarty, and rhythm guitarist, Chris Dreja. The Yardbirds, The Flash Express, Rolling Blackouts @ The Knitting Factory The Little Ones, Sea Wolf, The Temporary Thing @ The Troubadour De La Soul, KRS One @ The Canyon The Motels, Berlin @...

About once a month here in LA there will be a night of rock that is perfect. A night where you really should do yourself a favor and take advantage of the overflowing monkey cup of killer tunes happening in our own backyard. A night so filled with great music that if you don't go outside and listen to the music you should really ask yourself why you a) read this blog b) have...

There is a Pixies song that came out a while ago called "Allison". Some say that it was written about, or inspired by Mr. Mose Allison. Video after the jump.

The new LA Weekly puts its cards on the table this week with its gambling issue. We were immediately drawn to rundown of casinos in Los Angeles. Casinos? Los Angeles? Apparently it's about games of skill vs. games of chance; what we have, legally, in LA, are games of skill. So the casinos on the list are mostly dedicated to poker (no wimpy slot machines). We're thinking that these are the kind of places that might just make for an excellent christmukah detour, if you're looking for an alternative to the Norman Rockwell holiday. Or if your xmas is booked, you can still enjoy fast cards, moderate bling, and entertainment. Good-guy old-school rapper KRS-One will be at the Normandie Casino in Gardena on Saturday; troublemaker Slick Rick performs next Thursday. (Does this make them the Frankie and Deano of hip hop?)

It has been quite a while since KRS-One was claiming criminal minded and the few reports we've read about the event don't suggest there were problems or even calls of complaints to the force so we're very curious about the reaction of the LAPD to a Hurricane Katrina Relief concert at a warehouse in Downtown LA this past weekend.

Tuesday means it is once again new release day, second only to Friday as LAist's favorite day of the week. Check below for the newest in music and video for all your fresh entertainment needs.
