Is Jay Leno to Blame for KNBC's Low Nighttime News Ratings?

In an expose about TV news ratings, Variety's Michael Schneider digs into the current landscape, finding some interesting results: "According to the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, 52% of the public say they watch local TV news -- down from 64% in 1998. NBC affiliates in particular have been stung this fall; due to its low-rated 'Jay Leno Show' lead-in at 10 p.m., Los Angeles' KNBC has seen its late news drop 25% so far this fall in the adults 25-54 demo (the preferred measurement for local news)." KABC has dropped 17% for its 11 p.m. newscast, but KCBS is up 20%," perhaps in part because of parent CBS' strong primetime performance" and the duopoly with KCAL9.

KNBC Weatherman Gets Restraining Order Against Professor

Do you know which way onshore and offshore winds are going? The confusing nature of the subject has one local professor frustrated with KNBC's weatherman, Fritz Coleman. "Melanie Patton Renfrew, a Harbor College teacher, wants KNBC-TV's Fritz Coleman to change references to onshore and offshore winds. She says the terms are confusing because people don't know which are coming and which are going," reported the Associated Press. Apparently, Renfrew's insistence on the terminology has been bizarre, leaving Coleman in fear of his safety. A restraining order was put in place in March 2008, but she allegedly ignored it, which may end in jail time. A Burbank City Attorney said if Renfrew leaves Coleman alone through next August, the case will be dismissed. And in case you were wondering, "a sea-breeze originates over the ocean and blows onshore to land. The opposite is true for a land-breeze. It originates over the land and blows offshore to the ocean."

KNBC Anchor Paul Moyer is Retiring

It's a sad day for a great TV news station. Anchor Paul Moyer announced that he will be retiring. "I have given Los Angeles my loyalty and my professional best, and if I was able to illuminate a dark and dangerous corner with an investigation, or communicate a complex story in a meaningful way, I have been more than repaid for my devotion to this remarkable city,'' he wrote in a memo. Moyer began his on air career in 1972 with KNBC and KABC for a little bit between. No date is set for his last broadcast, but he will be sorely missed. "Our personal bond of respect and affection for Paul will never diminish, and we thank him for everything he has done for our station and the industry," said News Director Bob Long.

TV Junkie: Presidential Address; Finales for 'Leverage' + '10 Items or Less'; TV Viewing Trends; Happy Birthday Abe Vigoda

We have a host of finales tonight but the ones to keep an eye on are Timothy Hutton's "Leverage" (10pm on TNT, pictured right) and John Lehr's "10 Items or Less" (11pm on USA). Of local note, KNBC will be doing a special at 9pm on their historical 60 years of broadcasting in Los Angeles. KNBC helped define the medium of television and is due many accolades for it's services to the community over these 6 decades.

Remember this video? NBC picked up on it and aired it on Mother's Day.

KNBC Broadcaster: "Well Ed, is it one of these matters where the Kenyans and Ethiopians, let's be honest here, they see a white guy out front and they don't take him seriously?"

DirecTV called LAist on the phone and left us a message. The recorded voice said that DirecTV had worked out a deal with WNBC in NY that allowed certain zipcodes in LA the ability to get the east coast channel for just $6 a month. The benefit would be that we in LA would be able to get late night shows like Saturday Night Live and Conan O'Brien at 9:30pm instead of at 12:30am....

The blogger from the Inland Empire who calls himself An Ordinary Me, noticed something quite fascinating this weekend, that KNBC has removed veteran reporter Kelly Mack's photo and bio from their website.

During the 6pm news tonight, Christmas, on KNBC, hosted by Ted Chen and Kelly Mack, there was no mention of the fact that today is the anniversary of Jesus Christ's birth, or the name "Jesus", or the name "Jesus Christ". Was it because they decided to ignore Christmas all together? Nope. "Christmas" was uttered 30 times. "Holiday" was said 10 times. "Santa" - twice "pope" - twice "tsunami" - three times "savior" - once...
