LAist Interview: Kirby Dick, director of Outrage

I think it would be very fair to classify Kirby Dick as a documentary filmmaker's documentary filmmaker. He tackles difficult subjects; he's fearless; and, most of all, he tells great stories that can find a glint of humor even in the darkest of places. His two best films to date, Sick: The Life & Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist and This Film Is Not Yet Rated are both masterpieces of the form. Expect his latest film, Outrage to collect similar accolades after it hits theaters today. LAist had a chance to speak with Kirby earlier this week.

Weekend Movie Guide: Star Trek et al

The early word has been so good on Star Trek that I'm actually starting to get a little nervous that my expectations are too high. Despite the great reviews for Star Trek, however, I have no doubt that Outrage is the best film opening this week (LAist review here). If Atom Egoyan makes a film, I go see it. Simple as that. Adoration is his latest work, starring the very underrated Rachel Blanchard. Loved Mos Def in Be Kind Rewind; love Donald Faison always, but not sure I'll care for Next Day Air. Seems a little...broad.

Movie Review: Outrage

Forget Social Security, closeted homosexuality in Washington D.C. is the true third rail of American politics, and provocateur extraordinaire Kirby Dick firmly places his foot on it in his bracingly honest documentary, Outrage. The film covers in meticulous detail the sad truth that virtually all of the mainstream media knows but would rather ignore: there are many politicians and media personalities who lead double lives. Dick's film goes where none before it have dared: he puts names and sources on the record to startling, often tragic effect.

Thousands of innocent Angelenos are expected to perish today when a highly advanced robot civilization descends on Westwood. However, the carnage is not expected to ensue until 8:15 p.m. so you'll have most of the day to get your affairs in order. That's right, the LA Film Festival is celebrating the glory of independent film with a mult-theater premiere of the multi-million dollar budgeted Transformers. Indie favorite Michael Bay directs.

A Word or 36: 60 Minutes was interesting what with alleged ratfink George Tenet telling us all the things he should have been telling us years ago, when it would have mattered, when we could have done something about it. Tonight - Monday - April 30th, 2007 D'backs @ Dodgers (PRIME, 7:00 p.m.) How I Met Your Mother/The New Adventures of Old Christine/Two and a Half Men/The King of Queens (CBS, 8-10:00 p.m.) Two...

This Film Is Not Yet Rated - Keep the violence cartoonish and the sex missionary -- that seems to be the guiding principle of America's self-appointed film censors, the MPAA. In this fascinating look into the heart of a corrupt, shadowy and increasingly out-of-touch organization director Kirby Dick deftly exposes the MPAA's rank hypocrisy vis à vis depictions of homosexuality, female pleasure, "abnormal" sexuality and violent content.

If you’ve ever wondered why most sex scenes in mainstream American movies suck (and not in the good way), then this movie is for you. This Film Is Not Yet Rated is a surprisingly good documentary that unearths the shadowy mechanisms of the MPAA’s “voluntary” movie rating system. This film is very smartly directed by Kirby Dick and cleverly edited by Matthew Clarke, fastidiously untangling the collusion between movie studios and the government to...
