San Jose Sharks defeat LA Kings 3-2 (SO). The Kings really brought their A-game at the Staples Center against the best team in the league. They took an early 2-0 lead in the first period, but the Sharks naturally came back to tie things up in the second period. However the Kings stayed with it and kept the Sharks scoreless for the remainder of the game. The Kings get a point for the overtime loss, and they are really showing the promise of good things to come in the future.

Orlando Magic defeat LA Clippers 95-88. Man Dwight Howard has a tiny head, but boy can he play. He had a monster of a game scoring 22 points a notching 20 rebounds with six steals. And the Magic needed every point from their big man because at the end of three quarters the Clippers were leading by nine. Then the fourth quarter happened when the Clippers scored only two points in the first eight minutes. Now I've actually watched a couple of Clippers games recently, and they're not horrible. They have great shooters in Baron Davis, Al Thornton and Eric Gordon. It's just something happens in that fourth quarter where it falls apart.

Gutless. Pathetic. Pitiful. Sorry. And that’s being generous to the Lakers.

It’s been a long time since a winning team of an NBA Final’s game looked like a team destined to lose the series.

Celtics 104, Clippers 76 - The NBA's top team won last night in the Staples Center, and it wasn't the Lakers.

We at the Gothamist network would like to express our heartfelt wishes to the people of Minnesota in the days after their tragic bridge collapse. We're not trying to discount the severity of the accident by making note of it in opposition to our usual -Ist lightheartedness - we just wanted to take a moment and recognize those affected last week.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has launched an inquiry into allegations of racism and discrimination within the LAFD. Two men have filed suit against the L.A. Zoo and the city to stop construction of a $40 million elephant exhibit and to prevent it from having elephants on the grounds, alleging instances of abuse and neglect. Bring on the air pollution: the South Coast Air Quality Management District board voted to approve, 8-3, rule changes...

--Kobe Bryant Wednesday night

The big question last night was if Kobe would be the first Laker to score three 50+ games in a row since Elgin Baylor did it in 1962. And he did. And more. But the game wasn't all it was cracked up to be. There’s no reason why the Lakers shouldn't be able to shake the worst team in the league, especially when they made mincemeat out of Kevin Garnett and the Timberwolves last...

For the next two weeks, daydreaming will be the favorite pastime of NBA fans. They will try hard picture what Kevin Garnett would look like in a Laker uniform, or what Jason Kidd would look like running the Clippers offense.

Lakers 111, Timberwolves 94 - In a fourth quarter featuring both teams' reserves, the Lakers stormed to a comeback by outscoring Minnesota 34-7. With Kobe Bryant resting on one end of the court and Kevin Garnett on the other, the Lakers started the quarter outscoring Minnesota 25-2. Raptors 98, Clippers 96 - The Clippers lost on a buzzer-beater by T.J. Ford, who had only been shooting 27% until the clock ran out. The shot spoiled...

Don’t go there. Don’t even start.

We've been posting some of our favorite things from 2005, so now it's time for yours. Here are the 10 most popular LAist posts of 2005, from basketball to Beckham, from Ashton to the Suicide Girls.

The Clippers acquired Sam Cassell and a first round draft pick from the Minnesota Timberwolves for Marko Jaric and Lionel Chambers.

LAist has trouble believing this is for real. We have no problems with the Lakers trading Caron Butler. He's a one-dimensional scorer with little interest in defending, plays a position where the Lakers are stocked, and he's LA's most tradable commodity because his salary is low. We get that. We're also fine with the Lakers adding in a Chucky Atkins or a Devean George to match salaries in a trade. And we'd love to see the Lakers add a decent big man.

Assuming Phil Jackson doesn't want to reenact his Kobe Soap Opera, and assuming that Larry Brown is too tied up to leave Detroit, Flip Saunders is about the best the Lakers could do.

Hiring Phil Jackson would be a no-brainer for the Lakers. For one, Jerry Buss would save face after being perceived as the man who ran Shaq out of town. Secondly, Jackson is one of the few coaches with the clout to exert some control over Bryant. And third, from a schematic standpoint, Jackson might the only coach in the NBA who could figure out how to make Lamar Odom the Scottie Pippen to Kobe Bryant's Michael Jordan.
