A Haunting in Connecticut gets props for casting the radiant Virginia Madsen (and bad-ass Elias Koteas), but significant demerits for wussying out with a PG-13 rating. Once again -- all horror movies should be rated R! Just like in the good old days! As perhaps the world's biggest (and only) Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller fan, I naturally queued up to see Edge of Love when it briefly played in theaters. The movie's not much, but the bathtub scene with Knightley and Miller is definitely worth the price of a rental. Did anyone else tune out like I did after the first season of Mad Men? Grey Garden offers further proof that Drew Barrymore is perhaps the worst successful actress in the universe. Leverage isn't half-bad. Tim Hutton should work more.

I'm not sure if The Edge of Love is any good or not, but any movie that puts Keira Knightly in bed with Sienna Miller is worth my time and money. Race to Witch Mountain, on the other hand, does not. The original Escape to Witch Mountain was corny, badly-staged and maudlin -- in other words, perfect. Sunshine Cleaning is supposed to be very good (reviews have been kind). Just curious why it's been on the shelf for so long.

Yes, Keira Knightley has many detractors, but I think she's just fabulous. Period pieces like and be glad you have a normal, non-raping mommy.

Samuel L. Jackson continues to prove he's at least a decent box-office draw as his presence lifted the rote thriller was expected to do just okay business which is pretty much what it did ($8M).

Lakeview Terrace looks like such a rote, phony thriller that it's hard to imagine a decent (albeit declining) director like Neil LaBute being able to do much with it. Then again, it's probably Oscar-worthy compared to tripe like My Best Friend's Girl. Is there still an audience for Dane Cook? The Duchess looks like just another wan costume drama after the fiery and robust . Keira Knightly really needs to stop doing these things. Anyone else getting an overpowering TNT vibe from Appaloosa?

Despite being thoroughly outed by Vikram Jayanti in his superb documentary, , the Globes do retain some credibility in certain quarters. I don't buy that they are any sort of barometer for Academy Award nominations, but they do give nominees the extra media attention that may tip an Oscar nod their way. That said, here's what I thought about tonight's results and what they may portend.

Not too long ago, I recall picking up a certain book on a shelf somewhere and reading the back, and then deciding it was going to be mighty depressing and put it back. A couple months later, I went to see Atonement on a friend's request, knowing nothing of the story, and discovered it was the same book. And yes, friends, this story is depressing. Without giving too much away, (and you probably know this much already anyway), this is the story of a romance that might've really been something, had one major twist not taken place. Unfortunately it does, however, and pretty much nothing else goes right for the rest of the movie, while you sink further and further into the grayness of two beautiful people longing for each other, the guilt of one selfish little girl, and the tragedies of World War II. Yeehaw.

Atonement hits theaters this weekend as one of the few, definite contenders for an Academy Award. It bears all the traditional hallmarks of an Oscar-caliber film: lavish period piece (check), excellent source novel (check), epic scope (check), high-powered English cast (check), nude scene from Keira Knightley (double check). Those critics who've already seen it have been generous with praise, so I'm expecting nothing less than a winner. It's virtually certain that The Golden Compass...

So, yeah, Pirates of the Caribbean 3 and Superbad are the big releases this weekend.
