Other than The Cove, I didn't see a better film this year at the Sundance Film Festival than Humpday (review here). It's inventive; it's challenging; it's odd but, most of all, it's funny. Very, very funny. The premise may scare some away -- two straight friends decide to have gay sex for a porn film festival -- but the treatment of the material is so perfect that I can't imagine anyone not loving it. While not quite as laugh-out-loud funny as Humpday, In the Loop is as smart a comedy as you will ever see (review here). A barely-veiled satire of the run-up to the 2003 Iraq War, In the Loop features at least a half-dozen brilliantly venal performances, especially Peter Capaldi as Malcolm Tucker (nee the Prince of Fucking Darkness!) See these two movies!!

Readers of made only a ripple at the domestic box-office. It should do much better on DVD as a wider audience discovers this wonderful, heartbreaking film.

As expected, surprised to the high side in its debut, raking in a solid $22.4M and setting up Katherine Heigl as a real draw.

I'm shocked at the middling critical response that Cloverfield has generated. Sure, it's only a popcorn movie, but it's a is not a huge box-office hit. I also can't imagine there not being a huge backlash any day now. Flame away!

OK so now Oprah wants her own network and she's going to get it. Remember that she is one of the four founders of the Oxygen Network, you know, that paragon of programming that now includes: The Bad Girls Club, Snapped, and the Oxygen Original movie Husband for Hire. Now she's distancing herself from that loathsome swamp of bad TV because of her new altruistic endeavor, the modestly named OWN (The Oprah Winfrey Network) which replaces the Discovery Health Channel. Will the Big O stay with this for the long haul or just until something else, like a Stedman replacement, gets her attention?

Yesterday, famed and veteran Los Angeles fashion designer, Mr. Blackwell, talked up his worst-dressed women list, just released this morning, with LAist. He began the annual list 48 years ago. "I was sick of the ugly clothes that were being presented in the fashion industry and as dress designer I wanted to express my opinion. I never expected it to be this big."

Edward Barbanell is an actor with Down syndrome. But having sat down with Ed for lunch last weekend, I can assure you Ed has not gone "Hollywood" on us. He is in movie after movie, attends movie premieres, but above all else he loves his family and is not afraid to show it. After talking about his brother's upcoming wedding (Ed's going to be the best man) he agreed to do a quickie interview for LAist.

How did you become an actor?


Ron Lane coached me. He saw me at the Opus Playhouse, where i performed in "Little League Dreamers". He helped me with monologue, blocking, movement, where to go, etc. He gave good direction.

What was life like on the set of The Ringer?


Best experience of my life! It was a great cast, and a great crew. We laughed a lot, and made jokes. Katherine Heigl was my best friend. Everyone bonded and just joked around.

What was Johnny Knoxville like? Is he a nice guy?


Johnny Knoxville was also my best friend. He has a great sense of humor, he is lovable, he is a comrade. He understands that people with, or without disabilities need compassion. He is just a nice regular guy, jokester, who knows that it's the inner part of a person that counts the most.

What brought you to LA last weekend?


First of all to visit with my brother, and my new sister-in-law. And secondly to attend a fundraiser premiere of a short film i was in called Sky Squad Eagle Eight, where I play a character named Billy, and is premiered by the Chesire Project.

What do you think about LA?


I love LA. It's the best city. Especially because my brother and new sister-in-law who I love dearly. And because i get to eat lots of cake.
