Station Fire 38% Contained, More Evacuations, Community Meeting Tonight

The Station Fire, now the largest wildfire in LA County modern history, has burned through 144,743 acres (about 226 square miles) and is 38 percent contained. Although much progress has been made, early this morning, 15 to 20 homes in the Dillion Divide near Pacoima Canyon went under a mandatory evacuation. 64 homes have been destroyed along with 49 outbuildings. So far, the fight has cost around $27 million. There have been a handful of injuries, but most devastating has been the loss of two firemen.

Civilian Injuries Reported in Big Tujunga Portion of Station Fire

The LA County Fire Department is reporting and responding to two cases of civilian injuries sustained in the Station Fire. "2 civilians w/ burn injuries @ Big Tujunga fire station. 3rd degree over 50% of their bodies," comes the brief notation on the injured parties via the LA Co. Fire Twitter feed. Structures were reported as burning in this one of three branches of the Station Fire, which began Thursday in the Angeles National Forest above La Cañada Flintridge. Many people with cabins or similar homes in the Big Tujunga area may have not known, wanted, or been able to evacuate expediently, leaving them in the area and subject to injury.

Up to 50 Cars Involved in Cajon Pass Pile-Up

Near the summit of the Cajon Pass, which reaches 4,100 feet, June gloom fog may be the culprit in a chain reaction crash that has involved up to 50 cars, reports the Associated Press. "There was like three, four big-rigs, a couple cars accordioned in between them. In all between the three accidents, 50 cars-plus," said one driver who zig zagged through the mess that began around 7:30 a.m.

Meet Doakes, Super Duper Kitty Kat; He was Injured in Sunday's Brentwood Fire

On Sunday evening, Jessica Amen and Kyle Kushner lost just about everything when their two-story unit apartment in Brentwood went aflame. Over 100 Los Angeles firefighters fought the aggressive blaze for nearly an hour before extinguishing it, keeping it contained to only their unit. One resident and one firefighter sustained injuries, but nothing life threatening.

Last Night's Earthquake Did Cause Damage

Another day, another pedestrian accident? A 60-year-old man was killed last night around 6 p.m. in Van Nuys when he was hit by a vehicle involved in a car crash. "A car was making a left from Sepulveda onto Lanark Street when it collided with an on-coming vehicle," explained the LA Times via the LAPD. "That car careened off the road and struck the pedestrian." Then this morning, two 12-year-old boys in North Hollywood were struck by a car and air lifted to children's hospital with moderate injuries. The conditions surrounding the incident near the 5 Freeway and Laurel Canyon were not immediately known.

A house fire in the Baldwin Vista neighborhood that hugs the northern edge of Kenneth Hahn State Park in South LA left two people dead and one 63-year-old woman with 2nd and 3rd degree burns. The two dead, a man and a woman, were burned beyond recognition and have not been identified.

UCLA Student Critically Burned at Science Building

A 22-year-old female student sustained 2nd and 3rd degree burns to 40% of her body after an explosion in the Molecular Sciences Building shortly before 3 p.m. this afternoon. UCLA's police department originally reported it as a structure fire, but upon arrival, Los Angeles Fire Department authorities did not find a fire. Instead, the student, who was on the fourth floor, was burned after a chemical mixture caused a large flash, said fire officials. The chemicals used are currently unknown and other students nearby were not hurt.

The LA Fire Department is reporting a pretty insane crash that happened at 3:07 p.m. on the 170 Freeway at Burbank Blvd. In his own words, spokesman Cecil Manresa: "A CHP vehicle assisting a stalled motorist was rear ended by a 4 door sedan and pushed into traffic lanes. It was subsequently struck by another vehicle. A total of 7 patients with 1 critical were treated at the scene. One patient was extricated and all 7 patients were transported to local hospitals" A SigAlert issued was lifted at 4:09 p.m.

Police twice responded to a Silver Lake residence where a domestic dispute took place last night, but the second visit found deadly results.

USC sprinter Bryshon Nellum, dubbed "the fastest kid in the world," was shot three times in his legs while attending a Halloween party last night near the campus at Leonardo's. The 19-year-old was hit in the left thigh with two bullets and once in his right hamstring, according to abc7.com, and underwent an ultimately successful surgery last night and California Hospital Medical Center near downtown Los Angeles. USC's track coach Ron Allice says he believes Nellum's track career is not over.

A crosswalk at Hoover and 28th has seen two injuries over the past few weeks as the fall semester begins. Drivers say the students pop out of no where at the dark crosswalk and others are saying the usual crosswalks-are-not-100%-safe spiel. Several hit-and-runs with parked cars were reported over the weekend near Portland and 28th. At least one driver was caught, but several more were reported according to the Daily Trojan.

Mayor Villaraigosa released this statement late this morning while ordering all flags in the city to be lowered for the second time in three days: "Less than 24 hours after the crash, our number one priority remains rescuing victims, caring for the injured and connecting with the families still missing their loved ones. Our brave firefighters and police officers will work tirelessly until every person is found. Today, the thoughts and prayers of the people of Los Angeles are with the families who suffered loss last night and those still waiting for their loved ones to come home."

Update, 2:40 p.m.: According to Officer Diaz per KNX1070, the suspect hit one of the officers twice in the head with the butt of a knife. The other officer fired a couple shots with one apparently entering a Metro bus slightly injuring one passenger. The other shot hit suspect who was brought to hospital in stable condition. This was at the Southeast corner of Sunset and Vermont.


Both the LAPD and the LA Fire Department are reporting incidents in the vicinity of Sunset and Vermont Boulevards, but both cannot confirm if they are related at this early stage.

An LAPD Motorcycle Officer was sent to the hospital this morning when he was hit by a Toyota Camry at 5th Street and Stanford Avenue in Downtown LA between San Pedro St. and Central Ave. "The extent of the officer's injuries was not immediately known, but he was conscious and breathing when paramedics arrived," reports the LA Times. The cause of the accident or who is at fault is still not known.

A crash involving a Metro bus and a car has resulted in 9 injuries, 7 of whom were transported to the hospital. It occurred shortly after 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of 5th St. and Vermont Ave. Earlier this morning a collision between a Blue Line train and a vehicle occurred at 219 W. Washington Blvd. near Grand Ave. According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the driver turned in front of the train, but the train operator saw this and quickly used the emergency brakes, therefore limiting the impact of the crash. Save for the driver, there were no other injuries.

A narcotics officer was shot and injured today when a suspect he was serving with a warrant fired shots at him and his partner just after 3 p.m. today in Boyle Heights. He was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
