After a summer of memorable shows at the Hollywood Bowl, the 2009 posters will be exhibited at the Arclight along with many images created for bowl performances throughout the years. No one will forget Grace Jones master class in theatricality and the night that Jenny Lewis and Ray Lamontagne shared their unique authenticity with the Bowl audience. These shows and more hold a special spot in our hearts and now can take their place on our walls.

If there was one thing to say about Saturday night's concert at the Hollywood Bowl, which was 28-year-old Gustavo Dudamel's premiere as its conductor and music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, is that it brought excited crowds out from all walks of life.

The most happening family-fun party at the Hollywood Bowl every year is the Sound of Music Sing-A-Along. If you've never been, it probably sounds a bit tame, but when you've got over 17,000 people singing do-re-me, waving cellphones during Edelweiss, popping those firework-like poppers during Maria's first kiss, hissing and booing at the Baroness and Nazis (complimented by laser pointers making red eyes), among other home-made sound effects, it's a time not to forget (don't forget the wine and cheese, it makes it all that much better).

Sold Out in Minutes, Conductor's Debut at Hollywood Bowl Will be Free to View Online

It's likely never that the Los Angeles Philharmonic has seen so much crazy attention. But it's rare to see a 28-year-old take the helm of one the world's most notable symphony orchestras. Gustavo Dudamel is one of the most energetic, loving and passionate people you will see in this city and he's expected to bring great things to Los Angeles. His debut as a conductor will be a free performance on October 3rd at the Hollywood Bowl. Free tickets went within minutes and scalpers were trying sell them for $1,600.

Interview: Thomas Lauderdale of Pink Martini

One of the songs on Pink Martini's forthcoming album, "Splendor in the Grass", includes the line, "Life's a lot richer with a healthy mixture...not to mention lots more fun!" In addition to capping off a great musical romp, this statement also encapsulates the essence of Pink Martini. Over the course of 15 years, four albums and one live DVD, this little orchestra has crafted a sound that's both modern and retro, and Saturday night they'll take the stage at the Hollywood Bowl.

Alexis Weissenberg (a favorite of LAist) and Herbert von Karajan perform the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto no. 2, which can be heard in its entirety in this week's classical pick. There are only a few classical events this week as we head into September, and the classical pick this week takes places at the Hollywood Bowl. Concerns about air quality are warranted, but as for now, the shows are still on schedule.

This is an old recording by Feuermann performing the Dvorak Concerto. The greatest cellist performing the greatest piece (for the cello). The Hollywood Bowl is on twitter! Check out their feed for updates on concerts, insights on the artists that will be performing at the Bowl, and free tickets! Go to the Bowl this Tuesday for the conducting debut of Placido Domingo with Yo Yo Ma. Ma will be performing the Dvorak Cello Concerto, a warhorse that is often considered to be one of the most difficult and greatest works for the cello (if the work looks familiar, Lynn Harrell also performed the work at the Bowl, not too long ago). There are only a few tickets available, get them before you miss out on this historic opportunity. The concert starts at 8.

Bernstein is probably best known in popular culture today as the composer for music from West Side Story. College Humor updated the story for the 21st century, complete with references to twitter, facebook, and pandora.

Depeche Mode Cancels Chula Vista Gig Tonight; Will They Make it to LA?

Perennial rock idols Depeche Mode have been breaking hearts up and down the coast of California this week, after first canceling their Bay Area show Wednesday night, and now canceling tonight's show scheduled for the Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre outside San Diego in Chula Vista. This evening's much-anticipated gig had the plug pulled on it due to lead singer Dave Gahan's heath: "Doctors have ordered complete vocal rest for [him] for several days," explains San Diego's 10News.com.

Rockstar Status? Free Tix for LA Phil Conductor's Inaugural Performance Scalped for $1600

Well, we did call him the Obama of classical music earlier this year. 28-year-old Gustavo Dudmel is set to lead the Los Angeles Philharmonic this upcoming season in what is probably going to continue to put Los Angeles on the map for the genre. Former conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen led the group strong in past years and it helped to be in the internationally renown Walt Disney Concert Hall designed by Frank Gehry (did you know, the hall was designed before the similar-looking Guggenheim in Spain? Los Angeles just didn't have the money back then to build it).

Gil Shaham is a world famous violinist who loves making an appearance at the Hollywood Bowl regularly. Here he is performing the Carmen Fantasy by Sarasate, not to be confused by the Carmen Fantasy by Waxman (which might be more difficult). He is accompanied by Claudio Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic. If you haven't been to the OC Fair yet, try going on Wednesday, July 29th! The Pacific Symphony, led by Richard Kaufman, will perform music from the beloved Disney classics. Sing along to the tunes of Beauty and the Beast, the Lion King, Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and more! You can get two tickets for 19.50 at www.ocfair.com when you purchase the super pass.

Interview: Jewel Releases Soothing Seventh Studio Album

This year has been a busy one for Jewel. She recently released her first independent album, "Lullaby," which is an ethereal collection of three classic tracks and 10 originals. The self-penned material holds its own among the standards, and after listening to this disc, it's hard to imagine a voice better suited for lullabies than Jewel's. Last week, LAist spoke with her to learn why she hopes her new album appeals to adults and children alike, and what she has in store when she takes the stage at the Hollywood Bowl this Friday and Saturday.

Dengue Fever Makes Their Hollywood Bowl Debut Sunday

On Sunday night Cambodian psych-pop group Dengue Fever will make their debut at the Hollywood Bowl and couldn't be more excited. They will open a bill that features another Hollywood Bowl debut, legendary new wave disco dominatrix Grace Jones. Sharing this one-of-a-kind bill is the wildly theatrical Of Montreal, and with Henry Rollins hosting, it is sure to be a memorable show.

Beastie Boys Cancel Tour over Adam Yauch's Cancerous Tumor

In sad news today from the Beastie Boys, Adam Yauch has a cancerous tumor in his left parotid (salivary) gland which means the group will be canceling their current tour which includes the Hollywood Bowl on September 24th. In a video announcement--embedded below--Yauch expresses healthy optimism about his recovery, because the cancer is localized and will not affect his vocal chords. He's expected to have surgery next week, to be followed by radiation treatment. This will also delay the release of their next album. Those with tickets to the Hollywood Bowl show should check this website for details.

"To the Stars" in Dragonheart is one of the oft-used pieces of music in trailers and film today. Jump to 2:20 to hear the theme. This week's classical pick highlights concerts in LA that focus on movie music.Although Porgy and Bess is typically remembered as one of the most famous American operas of all time, it was also made into a film featuring Sidney Poitier and sammy Davis Jr. You can hear Gershwin's music and see a performance of Porgy and Besstonight at the Hollywood Bowl. Concert starts at 7:30 PM.

Classical Pick of the Week: Just Dance

LAist reported earlier that LA Phil violinist Robert Korda has been missing for three days now. His son Noah posted a few hours ago that "Verizon has cooperated...because we managed to get a court order". Once again, if anyone sees a Geo Metro with the license plate 3GPJ453, please call the LAPD Missing Persons Unit at (213) 485-5381 or (877) LAPD-24-7.

Aretha Franklin @ Hollywood Bowl 6/27/09

“Did I dare to wear my tightest gown tonight?” Not having access to Aretha Franklin’s wardrobe closet, we can’t say for sure, though after checking out the figure-hugging rhinestone-studded black number she’d just changed into, it seemed likely. Why not, it was a night for bold moves. A short time later, she’d dare openly lust after our President (“Brother is fiiiine… mmmm!"). Judging from the rapturous response generated by her every word, Franklin could have dared to do just about anything. Who can complain when the singing’s this good?

Music in film is one of the most important devices used in cinema today; this music has been ingrained in popular culture, to the point that most people could recognize the tunes. Also sprach Zarathustra, Ride of the Valkyries, Beethoven's 5th, are a few of the major works that come to mind. This week, you can hear a few of these tunes and more at several venues.

We may have spent the evening watching fireworks go off all along the horizon, in the streets, on the hills, and from major venues in Los Angeles, and we may have fallen asleep to the not-so-dulcet sounds of neighbors snap-crackle-popping their own stash of illegal fireworks into the wee hours, but we also woke up to a few great photos posted online from last night's many fireworks displays.

Hacking the Hollywood Bowl 2009, LAist-style

Neko Case at the Greek Theatre on Friday and the 31st Annual Playboy Jazz Festival Saturday and Sunday at the Hollywood Bowl reminded us of how much we appreciate the summer outdoor concert season.

Mahler's 5th symphony is one of the many pieces you can see and hear this summer at the Hollywood Bowl. This recording is performed by the Lucerne Festival Orchestra under Claudio Abbado.

There is something so completely odd, yet refreshing, about running up and down the stairs at the Hollywood Bowl during daytime hours. In a place you're used to sharing with 17,000 other people, being there completely alone--not even a security guard in sight--made us realize that this is one of Hollywood's biggest secrets (Read Part 1 of this series, The Hidden Staircases of Hollywood Heights, which are right next door).

In the early days of Hollywood, one of the spoils of the wealthy who built their homes tucked into the area's plentiful hills was the option for seclusion. Many of the homes were built into the hills and accessible by staircases and pathways. In the era of the automobile, anyone navigating the hills behind the wheel knows how steep and precarious the ascents and descents can be--not to mention the fine art of parking. But take away the heavy machinery and strap on a good pair of shoes and you can slide into what feels like another world (and get in a workout!) when you explore the hidden staircases of Hollywood Heights.

Hollywood Bowl '09 Season: Placido Domingo and The Beastie Boys

This week the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association announced the Hollywood Bowl 2009 Summer season. Board members, the press, and LA Philharmonic/Hollywood Bowl staff gathered on the stage at the Bowl to find out what is on the schedule this summer. The highlights are many.

The mutual love-affair between Los Angeles and England's Depeche Mode is long and storied. Remember when they played the Rose Bowl? This video might refresh your memory. Last seen locally at Coachella and the Staples Center, you'll get to see them under the stars this tour when the lads play two at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday August 16, and Monday August 17. Tickets are now on sale.

Seven Questions with...Diana Miller, Talent Executive - 'Last Call with Carson Daly'

LA has a diverse cast of characters. Whether it's the characters with stirring stories or interesting occupations or the people who are just simply characters, this town has them all. In an effort to get to know some of those characters a little better, we've created "Seven Questions with..."

The latest in a line of major artists to walk away from the music industry without walking away from music, Van Morrison launched his new career as Record Company Head with a two-night recording session at the Bowl. To kick-start his new Listen To The Lion Records, he revived his 1968 album Astral Weeks, bringing back original session guitarist and Mingus sideman Jay Berliner (bassist Richard Davis was also scheduled to appear but a family emergency forced him to pull out). A large number of Angelenos will be forever grateful to him for opening the studio doors.

Silver Lake's favorite son, Beck Hansen, returned to Los Angeles on Saturday night for a one night engagement at the Hollywood Bowl (9/20/08). In his largest, hometown-headlining gig, Beck took a decidedly different approach to his performance -- rather than relying on the gimmicks and theatrics of previous tours, he put the music on display.

It’s an LA tradition to send out summer with a fireworks spectacular at the Hollywood Bowl and this year, they may have found their most ideal co-host and honoree in Brian Wilson. As leader of the Beach Boys, he created the closest thing we have to an Original Soundtrack for the city, and last night, we got to see it played out in front of us, complete with fireworks.
