Hit-and-Run Leaves 28-Year-Old Dead in the Valley

Judy Ramos was crossing the street shortly past midnight on Sunday when a car struck her. She was brought to the hospital where she died the next day from her injuries. Now police are looking for the suspect vehicle but have few leads. It could be a 4-door white vehicle, but that's about it. She was hit on Vaughn, a side street, near Glenoaks Boulevard. Underage DUI Suspect Kills Cyclist, Injures 2

20-year-old Marco Antonio Valencia will be arraigned today in court for a weekend incident that killed a Santa Clarita Valley man and injured two others on Bouquet Canyon Road. It's a pretty gruesome story, as the local paper, The Signal, tells it:

Fatal Hit-and-Run in NoHo Leaves Pedestrian Dead at the Curb

A motorist driving on the streets of North Hollywood at around 2:15 this morning saw a body "laying near the curb" close to "the intersection of Satsuma Avenue and Vanowen Street," and made the 911 report, according to the Daily News. The victim, a Hispanic male in his 20s or 30s whose identity is being withheld until his next-of-kin is notified, was apparently struck and killed by a driver who did not remain on scene. Los Angeles police Sgt. Ben Alonso, watch commander at North Hollywood Division notes: ``There were no witnesses. But there are cameras in the area, so we're hoping to get something from them on the driver who fled." Alonso adds: ``There was no marked crosswalk where the victim was hit. So we're not sure what happened yet.'' The corner removed the body about an hour ago, and Vanowen has since been re-opened in the area.

Police Need Help in Fatal Jefferson Park Hit & Run

Yesterday morning at 2 a.m., 46-year-old Sheila Tudmon was in the street, presumably crossing, when she was struck by a black SUV that left the scene without rendering aid. She was later transported to the hospital where she died. The incident happened around 2 a.m. on Tudmon Street, near Arlington Avenue and 37th Street. Cyclist and Activist 'Roadblock' Injured In Hit and Run

On Monday night, the well-known cyclist and activist, who goes by Roadblock, was thrown from his bike after a driver rear-ended him going 45 miles per hour. The accident occurred on N. Glendale just before Park and the driver was said be in a dark gray sedan, plate number 6GYC11.

Bicyclist Killed in Echo Park in Late Night Hit-And-Run

A 50-year-old male was struck and killed early this morning by a hit-and-run driver, according to KTLA. The victim was riding on North Glendale Boulevard near Sunset Boulevard at around 1 this morning when he was hit by a silver-colored Mitsubishi. He was pinned against a car, according to reports, and a witness provided the vehicle's license plate number, although both that information and the deceased's name have not been made public.

Second Suspect Arrested in Hit-and-Run That Killed USC Student

Yesterday evening, authorities took the second suspect into custody in connection with the recent hit-and-run accident that killed one USC student and left another seriously injured. 32-year-old Josue Luna was found "attempting to cross into the U.S. from the Mexican border when a computer alerted Border Patrol agents that he was wanted by the Los Angeles Police Department," according to an LAPD press release issued today. Agents from the LAPD fugitive unit "picked up Luna and transported him to 77th Division Jail for booking." Luna posted bail at noon today. His wife, Claudia Cabrera, 30, was arrested for her role in the accident that took the life Adrianna Bachan, 19, and injured Marcus Garfinkle, 18. Cabrera pleaded not guilty to the charges of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run driving on April 6th. A memorial service for Bachan was held the following day.

Man Dies in Hit & Run While Getting Mail, Suspect Arraigned for Text Message Driving Death

When Richard Bohannan went outside his Chino house last night to go to the front yard mailbox, he never came back. A car hit and killed him before it fled the scene. His 13-year-old son that was with him was not hurt and this morning California Highway Patrol officers impounded a car parked nearby that is likely the suspect's vehicle.

Mother of USC Victim Now Focusing on Improving Intersection

After her daughter died in a hit-and-run accident a couple weeks ago, the family is moving on, but not back to Santa Barbara. "The intersection [at Jefferson and Hoover] where [Adriana] Bachan was killed is notoriously treacherous for pedestrians, and her mother said she’s on a mission to see that the area’s safety is improved. She said she’d like to see a pedestrian bridge constructed," Santa Barabra's Noozhawk reported. Damien Newton at StreetsblogLA notes the reality of these situations: "While it's more than inspiring to see a family try and turn a tragedy into something positive, it's also a sad statement that the only time people focus on the deadly conditions pedestrians face is when someone dies and their survivors demand it."

Man Seriously Injures 6-Year-Old in Hit & Run

Late Monday morning, a 6-year-old boy and his teenage brother were in a crosswalk on Florence Avenue near Figueroa when a vehicle struck the boy seriously injuring him. As the 15-year-old brother tried to note the driver's license plate on his cell phone, the man got out of his car and unsuccessfully tried to take the cell phone before fleeing the scene. Luckily, the brother got the license plate and description. The suspect’s car is a gold, four-door, 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass with 22-inch chrome rims, California license plate 2DBL949. The suspect has been described as a Black male in his early- to mid-20s, about five feet six inches tall, with a slender build and tattoos on the side of his face, neck and arms. The boy just had surgery yesterday for a fractured femur and other serious injuries, according to Detective Free of the LAPD's South Traffic Division.

Memorial Service for USC Hit & Run Victim to be Held Tonight

Following the appearance of hit-and-run suspect Claudia Cabrera in court yesterday--she pleaded not guilty--the family of Adriana Bachan announced two memorial services, one in Los Angeles. Tonight's 7 p.m. service will be held at St. Anthony’s Croatian Catholic Church on 712 Grand Avenue. Tomorrow at 1 p.m., a service in Bachan's home town Santa Barbara will be held in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish at 1300 East Valley Road.

Pregnant Woman Run Over Following Dispute, Baby Killed

Yesterday morning just before 10:30, 24-year-old Porche Davis, 8 months pregnant, was run over by the driver of a dark-colored Range Rover near East 102nd and Towne Avenue in South L.A., cbs2.com is reporting. As a result, Davis underwent an emergency C-section, and while "her baby was placed on life support," the child died yesterday evening. That same day, "Monica Macado, the driver of the Range Rover, turned herself into police." Police report there was some sort of dispute between the women; Davis' father claims "Macado is the baby's father ex-girlfriend and has had confrontations with his daughter before." He believes Macado acted out of rage or jealously.

Suspect Arrested in Fatal USC Hit & Run

Police this morning have announced that they have arrested a suspect in Sunday morning's hit and run that left one student dead and another injured. This comes one day after an anonymous donor added $100,000 to the award, already at $135,000. The accident happened early Sunday morning, as Adrianna Bachan, 19, and Marcus Garfinkle, 18, were walking across Jefferson at Hoover on their way home from a frat party and were struck by a driver who ran a red light. "According to a witness, the driver stopped the vehicle and a passenger got out of the vehicle to remove [Garfinkle] from the hood onto the ground," the LAPD said in a statement. "The passenger was described as a male Hispanic. The passenger got back into the suspect car and the driver drove eastbound on Jefferson Boulevard." Bachan died at the hospital and Garfinkle was listed in stable condition.

Reward for USC Hit & Run Upped Again, Now $235K

An anonymous donor has given $100,000 to the reward pot for last Sunday' fatal hit-and-run near USC, according to the LA Times.

Today the LA City Council voted to approve adding $75,000 to the already-assembled $50,000 from USC and $10,000 from the LA County Board of Supervisors as reward in the case of the hit-and-run accident that took the life of one USC student and left another critically injured, according to abc7.com. The accident happened early Sunday morning, as Adrianna Bachan, 19, and Marcus Garfinkle, 18, were walking across Jefferson at Hoover on their way home from a frat party and were struck by a driver who ran a red light. "Bachan was killed, while Garfinkle was seriously injured. The driver stopped briefly at the scene, while his passenger got out and removed Garfinkle from the hood of their car. They fled the scene, leaving the victims on the street." Although there were witnesses, the suspect remains at large. "Police are looking for a black or charcoal, late '90s sedan, possibly a Honda Accord or a Toyota Corolla, with a cracked windshield and front end damage."

Two Pedestrians Die in Unrelated Hit & Runs on Sunday near USC Campus & Highland Park

Sunday morning saw the death of one USC student who died in a hit and run crash as she crossed Hoover around 3 a.m. 18 year-old Adrianna Bachan and Marcus Garfinkle, 19, were were walking southbound on Jefferson Boulevard at Hoover Street. Both were in a marked crosswalk when they were hit by a black, 1999-2002 Honda Accord or Toyota Corolla, travelling eastbound on Jefferson Boulevard.

1 USC Student Killed and 1 Injured in Hit and Run Accident

Two USC students were struck by a vehicle as they "were walking in the crosswalk at Hoover Street about 3 a.m." according to abc7.com. The pair were hit by "a man driving a dark-colored vehicle east on Jefferson Boulevard," who fled the scene. The students were transported to the hospital, where the 19-year-old female was pronounced dead and the 18-year-old male received care for his "critical injuries." The incident is being investigated by LAPD's South Bureau Traffic Division.

Woman Behind the Wheel in U-Haul Police Chase Gets 6 Months

The 25-year-old woman who was behind the wheel of a U-Haul truck during a televised 90-mile police chase on January 28th has been sentenced to six months in jail, abc7.com is reporting. Further, "Alisha Nichole Mankin's driver's license was suspended for one year, and she was placed on probation for 36 months."

Santa Monica Police Looking for Driver who Ran Over Cyclist

Today, the Santa Monica Police are asking for help finding an unidentified hit and run suspect: "On January 17, 2009 at about 12:30 am, a 33 year-old male bicyclist riding southbound on 20th Street at Arizona Avenue was struck by an unknown vehicle. After striking the cyclist, the vehicle ran over the bicycle and the rider’s body and then left the scene without rendering any assistance or notifying police. The bicyclist is currently in critical condition at a local hospital." It was originally reported that the suspect vehicle was a red SUV or truck, but other witnesses say the vehicle may have been a large dark blue or black sedan. A mother was pushing her two children in a stroller Sunday evening when she was struck by a car that was later found abandoned downtown. It was 6:10 p.m. as the identified woman was crossing Bonnie Brae Avenue at Olympic in a marked crosswalk when they were hit by a black Honda.

Early Morning Hit & Run Causes 2 Cars to Burst in Flames

Downtown commuters on the northbound 110 near 2nd Street were seemingly unphased as they passed the two flaming cars in the middle three lanes of the freeway this morning around 6 a.m. "Officers are still investigating the cause of the accident but believe the person responsible left the scene before they arrived," said the LA Times. No serious injuries were reported. CBS has the video.

An 38-year-old homeless man died after he was struck by an SUV last night on the Pacific Coast Highway, just north of Sunset Blvd. The LAPD describe the driver of the green sports utility vehicle--possibly a 1999 to 2002 Nissan Pathfinder--as a white male, but have few other clues other than he was driving northbound.

A 55-year-old man walking across the street died after being hit by a car yesterday morning around 5:40 a.m. "A midsized car travelling eastbound on Oxnard Street, west of Donna Avenue, hit Charles Ernest Lawson of Northridge, as he was crossing the street in a southeast direction," the LAPD explained in a statement asking the public's help on finding the driver who did not offer the victim help or provide any information. However, witnesses said the man did stop momentarily before driving away. "He was described as a man of Middle Eastern descent, approximately 5 ft. 9 in. tall, 200 lbs., with brown hair, balding on top, with a mustache, wearing glasses and a brown/khaki flannel jacket."

Around 7:30 p.m. Sunday night, a 22-year-old female California State University Northridge student was hit and launched 40 feet from a crosswalk she was walking across. She suffered severe injuries and is listed in critical condition. The LAPD has few clues about the incident, which took place at Reseda Boulevard and Superior Street near campus. What they do know is that the suspect car is possibly a Toyota or Lexus traveling northbound. If anyone knows any information they can report it here.

A 49-year-old man was struck and killed at 8:20 p.m. last night when standing in an alley near 6th & Grand View Streets. "Investigation have very few leads and there are no description of the suspect vehicle or the driver," the LAPD said in a statement. MacArthur Park has various live-feed cameras like Hollywood Blvd. (and soon Ventura Blvd.) placed in the park, but lack of funding for maintenance led to inoperable cameras earlier this year. Officers at the local police station who are in charge of monitoring the cameras could not immediately say if the cameras were working or not this afternoon. If they were working, could they have helped this case any?

A crosswalk at Hoover and 28th has seen two injuries over the past few weeks as the fall semester begins. Drivers say the students pop out of no where at the dark crosswalk and others are saying the usual crosswalks-are-not-100%-safe spiel. Several hit-and-runs with parked cars were reported over the weekend near Portland and 28th. At least one driver was caught, but several more were reported according to the Daily Trojan.

The Inglewood Police are keeping silent about their city council's revelation yesterday that an August 31 incident involving officers fatally shooting a homeless man was recorded on tape and in the hands of the City. According to cbs2.com, the council released a written statement regarding the video, which allegedly shows "seven officers [who] fired a combined 47 times" at "a homeless man carrying a toy gun."

On Monday, just before 1:00 p.m., Lauren Charles Black, a 62-year old resident of Los Angeles, was crossing Glendale Blvd at Rockwood Street (map below, looks to be in or near Historic Filipinotown) when he was struck by motorcyclist going northbound on Glendale Boulevard. The suspect left the scene of the accident without stopping to identify himself or render aid to the fallen victim and Mr. Black was taken to a local hospital in extremely critical condition. He is now on life support.
