Hot Temps and Santa Ana Winds Have Firefighters on Alert

Although tomorrow afternoon we officially usher in fall, we're about to be swept up in another heat wave, this time complete with hot, dry Santa Ana winds. Not only does that mean we will be uncomfortably hot for another stretch of time, but also the risk for wildfires is dramatically higher. "Fire crews across Southern California will be on alert as a red flag warning goes into effect at midnight," explains abc7.com.

Station Fire Threatening L.A. Power Lines, Residents Urged to Conserve Energy

The Station Fire is not only threatening homes across the region and broadcast towers on Mount Wilson, but also the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's two 500 KV transmission lines northeast of the Acton. "These high-voltage power lines are critical to maintaining a steady supply of power to the city, especially as demand for energy rises throughout the day," the department made in a statement noting that all in-basin power plants have been activated to generate energy.

Your Wet, Hot Summer: Surf Still Up, Along With Our Temps

Dangerously high surf is still expected today at the beaches, as predicted earlier--all part of the same system of swells that "pounded Orange County beaches on Friday, killing a surfer at the Wedge" according to the OC Register. Massive waves can be awe-inspiring, but the 4-7' swells "and occasional sets up to 9′" and higher in some places mean even the pros should think twice about hitting the water.

Why, Yes, It's Going To Be Hot Again Today! And Tomorrow, And...

Got any eggs handy? You might want to experiment with sidewalk frying today, because we're due to "bake under sizzling temperatures today," according to the Daily News. The heat wave is not releasing its grip on us just yet, and the humidity is clinging too, and we're going to see "highs today in the low 100s in the San Fernando, Santa Clarita, San Gabriel and Pomona valleys and the mountains of Los Angeles County, other than the Santa Monica range." They might even set a new record out in Lancaster--beating the one they set yesterday (at a balmy 107 degrees). And it's not going to cool down anytime soon, so hang on, hot stuffs, it's going to be another few days of hot hot heat. The National Weather Service forecasts mid to upper 90s in Pasadena and Burbank, low 100s in the Valley, mid to upper 70s at the beaches, and DTLA will hit 89.

Just How Hot is it Going to Get? Uh, Really Hot.

A tip for those who struggle with small talk: Open with "Ohmigod it's too hot these days!" and the conversation will flow from there. We are, indeed, in a heat wave, and we can expect "several more days of torrid temperatures," along with "an excessive heat warning," from the National Weather Service, according to the Daily Breeze. Today we can add humidity to the high temps, causing a heat index that is a veritable hotbed for heat-related illnesses. Keep it cool, Los Angeles! Stay hydrated, avoid long periods of time outdoors, and pay close attention to the elderly, pets, and kids. Downtown temps will be in the high 80s, 90s to 100s in the San Gabriel and San Fernando Valleys, and high 70s at the beaches.

Heat Broke Records Again Yesterday, What's in Store for Today?

The heat wave comes to a cooler calm today, but yesterday was still a scorcher for some. Here's the breakdown from the National Weather Service:

Weather Check: 20 Degree Difference between Beaches & Inland

As of noon, the National Weather Service is reporting numbers that basically say "get thee to a beach!" Here's the breakdown:

Hot Enough? Heat Wave Breaks Records Across Southland

Years old records were broken for the second day in the row yesterday. Here's how it broke down, according to preliminary results from the National Weather Service:

Heat Wave Check: Temps Reach 99 in Downtown

It reached 99 degrees in downtown Los Angeles, Long Beach and Woodland Hills this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Going further than that, Fullerton and Palm Springs each broke into triple digits. For the most part, valleys, inland and even some beachside areas remained in the low to high 90s. Today's ultraviolet index level is 10, which means "a fair skinned person could suffer a sunburn in about four minutes if not protected," the Service warns. Stay cool and use that sunscreen!

Coachella-schmoachella*. Not everyone fled the City of Angels in favor of the music in the desert. Record-breaking temps made this one very hot and sunny spring weekend, and that sent folks out in droves to cool off by the shore, and kept the sun shining intensely over all sorts of events taking advantage of the great outdoors we enjoy here in Los Angeles. In the mix: Earth Day weekend events hopefully had lots of people thinking about this big blue marble we call home. Here are a sampling of shots from our LAist Featured Photos pool on Flickr showcasing what some Angelenos did this weekend. So what did you do?

Weather Check: We're Still in a Heat Wave

Yesterday broke records and today it's expected to get hotter, breaking triple digits again, in some areas such as inland-valleys. Some predicted highs are 94 for LAX, 96 for Burbank, 97 for downtown, 98 in Long Beach, 101 in Anaheim and 97 in Woodland Hills and Pasadena. Cooler temps should come to the coastal areas tomorrow with widespread cooling on Wednesday or Thursday.

Today, our computer is not about to explode like it was for the past two days in the sweltering heat. "The National Weather Service forecast highs for Thursday of between 69 and 79 near the Los Angeles County coast, 86 to 94 inland, 84 to 94 in the San Fernando Valley, 87 to 92 in the San Gabriel Valley, 88 and 93 in the Santa Clarita Valley and 82 and 91 in the Antelope Valley," reported the Long Beach Press-Telegram.

"The bottom line is that we're definitely going to be living in a warmer Southern California," said Bill Patzert, a NASA Jet Propulsion Lab climatologist and oceanographer who co-authored a study that examined Los Angeles' daily temperature data for a hundred year period.

More hot times are headed our way again this week, with temps expected to reach triple digits in many parts of Los Angeles, like in the San Fernando Valley where 100+ degree weather will take over starting tomorrow. The Daily News is passing on the heat wave lowdown; it's bad news for folks sweatin' it out without relief in some areas, and good news for those who have the beach handy. Don't be surprised if a whole lot of other people have the same idea you do--to cool down on the coastline or take a dip in a neighborhood public pool. It's "word to the wise" time, too: Stay hydrated, conserve as much electricity as you can, and be careful of kids, pets, and the elderly who can't handle the heat like most of us can. So it's going to get hot... ah, yes... summertime!

One small 1.4 magnitude aftershock hit the Loma Linda area after yesterday's 4.0 shaker, but the Earth pretty much stood still in Southern California for the last 24 hours. Two other 1.4 quakes were reported near Fontana and Murrieta Hot Springs and a very minor 0.6 near Littlerock (East of Palmdale). The recent heat wave is a good reminder for earthquake preparation. What if "The Big One" hit in the middle of that? Would you be prepared?

The recent heatwave was expected to transition to cooler temperatures beginning last Saturday, but there was no such luck, forcing weather forecasters to say today would be that day as the Valley would get a much needed marine layer (as of 8:30 a.m., skies are blue here in the Valley). If correct, instead of triple digits that became the norm the past four days, parts of the Valley would start to feel a lot cooler. Woodland Hills is expected to have a high of 92 degrees while just a few miles east in Sherman Oaks, the high should be 83.

Face it, it's hot. And with some people, especially the elderly, living without AC in poorly insulated homes, cooling centers can literally be a lifesaver. Three cooling centers in the Valley will remain open tonight until 8:00 p.m. tonight and will be open tomorrow from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. There's also free water! The centers are located at parks in Canoga Park, Sunland and Northridge. [Via Mayor's Office Press Release]

What the LA Department of Water & Power is saying today during the heatwave: "Yesterday's energy peak reached 5856 megawatts, and was the second highest load in June. Today's peak demand is expected to reach or exceed the record of 6165 megawatts, set on July 24, 2006. While the LADWP has enough power to meet the city's needs, extraordinary demand during prolonged hot temperatures puts a tremendous strain on the city's electrical distribution equipment. Customers are asked to do their part by cutting back on energy usage. For its part, the LADWP's crews remain prepared to respond to any outages. As of 2 p.m., less than 60 out 1.4 million customers were experiencing outages."

As temperatures easily reach over 100 in some parts of the region, it is affecting those who are vulnerable. An 90-year-old woman driving in San Bernardino County died when she stepped out of her car to search for her husband who left the car for unknown reasons. They were found 50 yards from their car and the 116 degree heat killed Virgil Sanders and the husband had 2nd and 3rd degree sunburns.

As Spring turns to Summer this weekend, the temperatures are expected to mark the season change with a bang starting today. The National Weather Service is predicting today's temperatures to range from 95 to 105 in region's valleys. Downtown is expected to be in the 90s and beaches should stay normal (upper 60s, low 70s).

The city seems to have gone completely mad. From a 16 year-old shot in Northridge to a 70 year-old stabbed to death in Hollywood, Sunday was just another day in what is starting to feel like an out-of-control crime wave.

My relatives on the east coast just don't understand California weather.

Nearly 500 Teamsters tired of not being able to work for the weekend - because they have to work on some weekends - went on strike early this morning affecting Long Beach, Compton, and Sun Valley. About a quarter million people will be touched by the strike that is based around two major issues, long hours and respect. [Waste Management] said the [Teamsters] contract expired in September and that its latest offer included a...

Tucked into one of the ubiquitous strip mall enclave of business on Hollywood Boulevard in Thai Town, Sapp's Coffee Shop is barely noticeable (and not to mention not terribly attractive as a lead photo--my apologies). I first got a peek at the tiny no-frills joint earlier this year, when one of my favorite (and adventuresome) foodies, Anthony Bourdain, stopped by with a local food blogger to try their authentic Thai Boat Noodles. This dish...

Recent major events for the LAFD include last night's apartment fires in North Hollywood and Westchester. Busy day on LAPD's blog: a drive-by shooting yesterday, a labor day homicide, Congressman Xavier Becerra's office burglarized, two fatal Skid Row stabbings, a Carl's Jr. robbery and a fatal shooting this morning in South LA. Sparked by the recent heat-reated power outages, Matt Littman at the Huffington Post asks if Los Angeles is in permanent decay: "It...

Did you know today is the 226th birthday of El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora La Reina de Los Angeles -- aka L.A.? The old bitch is looking pretty good for her age! Although the city did not incorporate until 1850, September 4th, 1781 is the date that 44 Mexican pobladores set out from San Gabriel with a military escort to settle alongside a great river -- then called the Rio de Porciuncula, later to...

Happy first weekend of September - and happy Labor Day weekend, too, for our American cities! Let's take a look at what's been happening around the Ist-a-verse.

2,000 DWP customers lost power today in Sun Valley. At noon, power was threatened to be cut from large energy consumers. But as the afternoon progressed, the Stage 2 was unlikely to happen. Yes, this is a heat wave. At age 18, having a DUI conviction, being a tagger and dealing in drugs is bound to get you caught up in murder charges in Van Nuys. A brush fire broke out in Castaic today...
