Taste Tested: Tender Greens' House-made GoBars

Tender Greens recently launched a line of house-made energy bars and they sent some our way for a little taste test. Since the eatery is focused on providing patrons with sustainable eats served in an eco-friendly and fast-casual environment, creating whole-food bars that people can grab on the go is a pretty natural move for them. The GoBars were created by TG's Chef Fermin Arias, and have an ingredient base of toasted nuts, organic rolled oats, puffed rice, dates, flax seeds and almond butter, boosted by the addition of bites and bits that make their three flavors: Blueberry & White Chocolate, Chocolate Espresso Bean, and Tropical Fruit.

Yesterday Health Magazine (via iVillage/MSNBC) released their list of the nation's top ten healthiest grocery chains. The list was compiled based on the findings of six experts selected by the publication in comparing the top 35 grocery retailers, and revealed that your neighborhood big name big box can actually be good for you. Criteria for ranking included "the freshness of produce and taste of prepared foods to the healthiness of packaged goods and availability of supplemental nutritional information."

Now that fast food is banned in South LA in order to make way for healthier options to exist in the region, what's next? In New York, it was reported today that "food stamp sales have grown to $90,000 in 2007 from $3,000 in 2002." Part of the increase comes from technological advancement with wireless or scrip debit food stamp machines at the markets. 118 markets in California use these machines with over 25 of them located in the Los Angeles area. Unfortunately, only a couple of the South LA farmers market use EBT and food stamps. Or is it that there are only a few South LA markets in the first place?

LA Update, a daily weekday update on what's going on at City Hall (aired on Channel 35) reported today a common fact still needing to be addressed: healthy grocery stores are harder to come by in lower income parts of the city. "A newly released report urges Los Angeles city leaders to encourage major grocery chains to open the same quality stores in low income communities. The Alliance for Healthy and Responsible Grocery Stores report found, unlike on the Westside, residents in East and South Los Angeles and parts of the San Fernando Valley have to drive several miles for low-cost healthy food. In what maybe a sign of some progress, Councilmember Jan Perry helped break ground last week on a new mixed use development project on Central Avenue that will include a Fresh and Easy supermarket."

In Pasadena, Orean claims to be the first vegetarian fast-food drive-thru (fast it is not). And beginning Saturday, a new restaurant in West Hollywood will be taking claim to being Los Angeles’ first fast food burger house using only certified organic ingredients. O!burger will offer grass fed beef, free range turkey, hot dogs, salads, French fries and shakes. And yes, they have veggie burgers made from their own recipe based on spinach and corn.
