Last Wednesday, I spent happy hour at Ugo Wine Bar in Culver City. The week before, we spent it at Bottle Rock (where I've had a great time on the weekend), which was disappointing. It was loud, the service was slow and the food was expensive. Ugo Wine Bar was exactly the opposite and it was such a pleasure. We thought it was Vinum Populi, and it used to be, but these days, it's......

Suede Bar, downtown's newest lounge, opened last week with little fanfare. Can the red suede bar that promises "beautiful staff" and a "sexy ambience" save The Westin Bonaventure from its tacky self or is it just more of the same? Downtown's Westin Bonaventure Hotel is odd. While it was perhaps a shining beacon of commerce and luxury travel when it first opened in 1976, the fading hotel now reads more like a bad 70's porn......

It stands to reason that sometimes a good Happy Hour is hard to find in this town. But give us one that combines drink bargains with sushi and you've got our attention. If you're either coming or going on (Big) Santa Monica between the beach and WeHo or those general environs after a hard day's work, Century City's KULA Sushi Bistro's Happy Hour would make a worthy stopping point. Between 5-7 Monday-Friday evenings, the restaurant......

Wonder where all your favorite bartenders from Seven Grand, the downtown whiskey bar, have gone? Well, Aidan Demarest (formerly 7G and the Doheny's GM) is now director of beverages and spirits at Edison in downtown, Damian Windsor will be starting his stint at Gordon Ramsay at the London on July 2, Marcos Tellos is bartending at West Hollywood's Comme Ca and running For Medicinal Purposes -- a cocktail consulting company -- with Damian, Patrick......

Deacon Booze has returned! Yes, your favorite Steely-Dan-inspired happy hour listing is back on track for March, and we still need your hott hott tips! I recently fell victim to a devil of a gastrointestinal virus (sexy!), and so was unable to ingest any kind of liquid other than Top Ramen broth, but I am happy to say that my convalescence is complete, and I am ready to drink. And drink. And drink! Send......

Fie upon those who wish downfall upon the Westside! We shall smite thee with our flaming elven sword. (That's how we talk to LAist staffers who aren't behaving; nothing whips a writing team into shape like a little dangerous elf talk.) We will now stop being nerds and give you incentive to visit the Westside. Here are some more happy hour specials that'll make you wish you lived on the beachier side of life.......

Devoted LAist reader Ashley requested a Westside version of Deacon Booze -- and as a former long-time resident of the Westsiiiiiiiiide, I'm more than happy to oblige. Here are some of my top spots for drinks in West LA -- (and trust me when I say I have TESTED these places more than a few times). Why not email me your picks for when you find yourself west of the 405? carrie@laist.com. Did I......

Is it still raining? Seriously? Sigh. Since the wet weather is making me loathe to venture very far away from my office, here's a few happy hour spots in Hollywood that were recommended by reader Klodi B. (Okay, and one in Highland Park, but whatevs.) Anyway, she emailed me with her animal-themed picks. I like emails. I like 'em a whole lot, especially when they are all about cheap booze. Or animals. I'm not......

Dudes, it's raining, I know, but that doesn't mean there's still not cheap booze to be found in this city tonight! Here's a few more we managed to dig up this week -- send your secret spots and recommendations my way at carrie@laist.com. Kung Pao Kitty, Hollywood, 3pm - 7pm everyday: Need more, uh, kitty in your diet? Try $3 appetizers like lettuce cups, chicken wontons, and fried tofu, plus $3 drinks. Lucky Devil's,......

Dudes, it's become clear to me that just by walking about whatever fine neighborhood you happen to reside in (NoHo, WeHo, SilLake, DnTn, SanMo, KTown, HanPark, CulCity, etc), you're bound to happen upon a great little bar with great happy hour deals. Fer instance: this week I was walking around Downtown and ran into some friends, who happily guided me to the Redwood Bar & Grill, a fun and surprisingly classy little pirate bar......

It ends tonight at 9 p.m., and really, an art walk is more fun at night anyway. Tonight lends itself well as a great chance to go see © Murakami Exhibit at the MOCA that we told you about back in October. If not that, from comedy to smaller art galleries, the Downtown Art Walk is worth a trek to LA's central core. And if you head towards The Edison first, happy hour runs......

Winter really gets me down. It's cold, it's rainy, everybody's on vacation except for me. Worst of all, when I get off work every evening, it's already dark outside. Can we say SADS? So how best to beat the winter blues? Dear WGA: Being Thanksgiving weekend and all, I have spent a lot of time the last few days thinking about what I am thankful for. I am very thankful that I have been able to make a living as a writer. I am thankful that every day I am able to do something creative, something I love. As I’ve walked the picket lines, I’ve been very thankful for the overwhelming support I’ve felt from......

Last Friday I was graciously invited to check out Ford's Filling Station's kick-off of their new "Ford's Play" snacktime menu. Billed as being "not quite lunch, not quite dinner" the comfy Culver City eatery has introduced a late afternoon menu boasting small bites and discount drinks. This Happy Hour-esque array of tasty offerings is available from 4-5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and certainly does take the edge off those late-in-the-daytime munchies with......

Around 6pm yesterday I found myself craving a post-work beer, but there was a problem…I was on the Westside, far from my normal Silver Lake stomping ground. Fortunately, fate was looking out for me. While walking toward the Landmark to catch a film, I happened upon the Bourbon Street Shrimp Company. To be honest, I’ve never heard of it, but with patio doors facing the street I could hear diners digging into their Cajun......

When I was given the opportunity to review POLA Kirei, the new Japanese skin care salon in Beverly Hills with a facial, I jumped at the chance. Every year I promise myself that when my tax return arrives in the mail, I’m going to treat myself to a massage and facial, yet somehow that money disappears somewhere around the Beverly Center, The Grove and various happy hour deals. My facial was scheduled for a......

Cinco De Mayo kicked off the summer drinking season and now we've got Memorial Day and the Fourth of July just around the corner. What better way to relieve the summer heat than with a nice cold brew? Suds are once again pouring in the Dodger Stadium bleachers. So there we were. Granted putting ten pounds into a five pound bag, trying to fit too many things into a Friday night but we were fairly convinced we could do what we always do - outsmart LA traffic and when there are moments where the congestion breaks up, well, gun it. Friday was not one of those nights. Maybe it was because it was Friday the 13th. While it has never served as......

Just in case we need to remind you, despite being the highest priced dog in the park, the Vegetarian Dodger Dog still exists and in the same place as it has been for the past few years (we tested this theory last night, it works). It is only sold in one spot in the whole park, so just repeat this mantra and you will be fine: Level 7, Section 3-5. Level 7, Section 3-5.......

Minibar bills itself as a stylish haven for those with a curious palate for epicurean treats and tasty cocktails. Here are the five reasons we like Minibar: 5. The ambiance Tucked into an otherwise non-descript patch of Cahuenga near Universal Studios and the end-point of Lankershim Boulevard, Minibar's colorfully cozy atmosphere makes it a great place to take a date, to have a girls' night, or host a soiree in their back "treehouse" room.......

The Key Club gets top billing tonight because The Bronx headlines a benefit for Wheels for Humanity, which supplies wheelchairs. Also on the bill : Chuck Ragan (ex-Hot Water Music) with members of Flogging Molly, and some rock star karaoke.
