LAist Interview: Brian Wilson

It's a great week to be a Brian Wilson fan in Southern California, with the release of a great new DVD package, an in-person signing and, finally, a performance of his very fine new album in the city that inspired it.

UKULELE:*: The second annual Southern California Ukulele Showcase comes back to the Japanese American National Museum’s First and Central summer concert series. The event is a fun one—and best of all it’s free. This time the evening will feature “up-and-comers,” including Paula Fuga, Brittni Paiva, Abe Lagrimas, Moana, The Monnlighters and King Kukulele. The event is co-curated by Ali Lexa, host of "Ukulele Spotlight" on KPFK 90.7 FM.

The Guitar Center in Northridge is displaying its “Legends Collection” – famous guitars of rock gods. On display will be Eric Clapton’s “Blackie” and Gibson “335,” Stevie Ray Vaughn’s “Lenny” and the Edge’s custom Les Paul. Replicas of Clapton’s and Vaughn’s guitars will be for sale – but that won’t guarantee you’ll be able to play like them.

Last Friday night at the Roxy, Paper Magazine treated attendees to a raucous tournament-to-the (almost) death, of guitarist vs. guitarist. We might all be playing Guitar Hero III but these guys were doing it for real. At least 8 guitarists competed head-to-head over several rounds - each guitarist had 90 seconds to shred their guts out with an optional rhythm section. A three judge panel would decide or resort to a 30 second face off...

The California Independent System Operator (CAISO), charged with managing the electricity grid in California, has issued a Flex Alert for both tomorrow and Thursday due to the current hot weather and demand for electricity, which is approaching capacity.
