Recession Obsession: Going Greek at Papa Cristo's

Some know my friend Jimmy as Jimmy The Greek. He’s a spanakopita snob, knows the name of that building on Yanni’s album cover, and could write a guidebook on the nightclubs of Mykonos. He’s pretty damn Greek. This, Brooklyn-bred, first-generation said that the best Greek food in Los Angeles can be found at Papa Cristo’s.

TV Junkie: Top Gear's Project Sipster; 'Cupid' Returns

Our friends over at BBC America's "Top Gear" have really done it - they have achieved unprecedented success with "Project Sipster": the creation of a car that gets 84mpg , goes from 0-60mph in 7 seconds, and whose cost was to be $7000 or less. You can see more in this video. Suck it Tesla and watch "Top Gear" on BBC America tonight at 8pm.

In late December, Mediterranean Fresh finally opened their doors next to the famous Musso & Franks on Hollywood Blvd. Owned by the Sunset Entertainment Group--same people who operate the Pig & Whistle--this order and sit-down style restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at night, but they are hoping to keep it open until 4 a.m. once they get their liquor license. So far, we're finding the food to be quality matched by great prices.

After a long summer of great concerts over at the Greek Amphitheatre in Griffith Park, this Sunday, November 16, is the venue's last for 2008. And what a great way to end it with jazz greats including local jazz pianist Brad Mehldau. The night will also feature the amazing McCoy Tyner Trio and the Ellis Marsalis Quintet. LAist is giving away a handful of pairs of tickets away (you can also buy tickets here not to mention a pre-show wine and cheese meet and greet with the artists).

Looking for something to do this weekend that is the exact opposite of the LA Triathlon? Then head over to Saint Sophia’s Cathedral at Pico / Normandie for this weekend’s LA Greek Festival, a face-stuffing celebration of the heritage (and culinary prowess) of all things Hellenic. While last night was the free admission night, the greasy, delicious meat of the festival is still to come, with today and Sunday offering authentic Greek cooking demonstrations, Greek theatre, and enough ouzo and revelry to make Dionysus blush.

Papadakis Taverna at Sixth and Centre streets in downtown San Pedro is a popular high-profile Greek restaurant that has served up food for the past 35 years to locals and celebs alike. Now, the owner is looking to sell it, but not anyone can buy it, according to the Daily Breeze. The Papadakis would like someone to buy it and keep the restaurant going. The asking price is $500,000 for the restaurant itself, which includes most everything inside plus $2.5 million for the property. This is all much better news than than a Marie Callender's taking over the space, something which was a possibility some months ago.

"... the kids who join the Greek organizations are very spirited. They are very much involved with all aspects of college life. They run for office and they are big philanthropists," a California State University Northridge (CSUN) student told the Daily News in an article about the city of Los Angeles ordering members of two off-campus CSUN fraternity houses, Zeta Beta Tau and Pi Kappa Alpha, to shut down. Hrmmm, if these students are...

Greek food. Its fresh, cool Mediterranean flavors are exactly the kind of thing I crave on a hot July day. But man is it hard to find some good, authentic Greek food in LA. Sure there’s Daphne’s right by my house, but that’s about as authentic to Greek food as Baja Fresh is to Mexican. So where can one go for a fun, flavorful midsummer night’s Greek meal? The answer is simple: Sofi. Sofi...

Dear LAist, Any idea whether or not modest mouse will still be playing the greek this Sunday? Love, Andrea of Burbank Dear Andrea, One of the great things about being LAist is we have the email addresses of everyone important. And we took your email and forwarded it to one person and that person replied in seconds and said that due to the fire, the Modest Mouse show on Sunday, as well as the...

One's a middle aged crooner, the other are young bucks from across the pond. They're both playing concerts this month here in LA and we've got tickets for both of em. Keane is a trio from Sussex and Connick is a Sinatra-fan from Louisiana who married a Victoria Secrets model. Although they're great piano-based artists, neither seem all that street-tough, which is why we ask Who Would Win in a Fight: Keane or Harry...
