Last Sunday the backlot of CBS Radford Studios in Studio City was filled with some of the biggest names...in food. The 23rd Annual Great Chefs of LA was indeed the promised food and drink filled afternoon of music, swag bags, and auctions, all to benefit the National Kidney Foundation of Southern California. Hosted by comedian and TV star George Lopez, the event drew some celebs (so we hear!) from entertainment and lots of food talent (so we ate!).

TV Junkie: 'V' Settles; George Lopez vs. Wanda Sykes

Did any of you tune in to the 2nd episode of "V" last night? We ask because viewership dropped by about 30% from the previous week. Don't get us wrong, we like the series but the drop in ratings made us think a bit more about the program. First of all, they're not really breaking any new ground here and that's fine since the majority of the targeted demographic don't remember the original series at all but we thought there would be more updating to the story other than contemporary babes, hunks, and computer graphics. We'll stay tuned for more but after this we wonder about the remake of the classic and dear-to-our-hearts "The Prisoner", which premieres this Sunday on AMC.

Presaging the imminent arrival of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, ($5M/$5.5M).

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist looks like an ideal date movie for confused and annoying teens. The presence of the awesomely talented Michael Cera, however, insures my aged presence. Beverly Hills Chihuahua looks so awful that it will probably be hilarious. Stoned. I don't much like Bill Maher, but I do like that Bill Maher exists and has a platform on which to vent his spleen. That said, Religulous feels an awful lot like fishing with dynamite. I mean, making fun of the devoutly religious? Is this really cutting edge material?

For over seven years, the Rebels of Comedy have created a warm and welcoming environment in one of America's most notoriously vicious industries. The comedy troop regularly brings Los Angele venues the biggest names and best up-and-coming talent in stand-up.

For those interested in entertainment I might liken to wrist-slitting, there's Disney on Ice or George Lopez live at the Nokia. For everyone else there's a few things going down around town.

Ahead of the Wednesday holiday, the DVD pickings this week are awfully, awfully slim. When the first season of a Sci-Fi channel TV show is the bestselling new DVD on Amazon.com you know you're looking at a fairly dreary list of new titles. A few of them, though, do merit interest either because they're pretty good (Puccini for Beginners) or pretty awful (the Corey's Dream a Little Dream 2). If you're looking for some original Grindhouse double features (not that prettified Weinstein company crap), two twin bills go on sale today. Aside from that, it's a barren week. Next Tuesday looks more promising.

Most would think that a five-year-run on a tv series on a major network would be a huge success. Five years would especially seem successful for a show that no one ever talked about, cared about, or even noticed. One that got walloped when put up against the likes of American Idol, and had to be moved to four different time slots.

A Word or 49: Iggy Pop redeems Jimmy Kimmel tonight. For petessake when is the stupid 'house' gimmick ever gonna end on House? Today - Tuesday - April 24th, 2007 Rita Hayworth Marathon (TCM, 5- p.m.) Starting with Pal Joey, then Salome, etc. Check...

A Word or 47: Full disclosure - tonight I might watch the cultural trainwreck that is Idol and then it's on to Lost and then an evening culminating with LCD Soundsystem on Letterman, they will kick ass! And then, if I can find some Cialis, a bit of Tina Fey on Conan. Tonight - Wednesday - April 11th, 2007 Jericho/Criminal Minds/CSI: NY (CBS, 8-11:00 p.m.) From post-apocalypse to a dead New Yorker in medieval...

A Word or 52: Some people hated last week's "useless" Lost because it didn't further the storyline but I thought it was a humorously macabre and welcome break that reminded me of some of the better tangential X-Files episodes from 10+ years ago. If looks like we're going back to that story line tonight, oh well. Jericho (CBS, 8:00 p.m.) Roger goes off the deep end, and who can blame him Friday Night Lights/Crossing...

By week's end, this town is regularly littered with a handful of free rags. Combined, these publications put the Tribune Company's Spring Street operation to shame as far as reporting on the dozens of municipalities that make up this metropolis of more than 12 million people. LAist reads the weeklies so you don't have to. If there's anything we missed, pretty please let us know, or better yet, drop it in the comments section...

A Word Or 45 (or so): Fox has got it down, the top 5 most viewed programs on TV were on Fox, 3 were episodes of American Idol and the other 2 were Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? Trail Blazers @ Lakers (Fox Sports, 7:30 p.m.) Jericho (CBS, 8:00 p.m.) Back from hiatus....

A Word or 48: House was pretty good last night and the timing was great what with the blizzard hitting New England today. With the semifinalists declared on Idol and Paula Abdul declaring that she's never been drunk in her life, I get the feeling that show is really coming along now. Today - Wednesday - February 14th, 2007 Breakfast at Tiffany's (TCM, 4:05 p.m.) Holly Golightly, not the band Beauty and the Geek...

A Word or 24: The now much-maligned Lost is back. OK so this is a bad show compared to what else on (basic cable) TV right now? A Word or 56: Thankfully I was doing my radio show last night and was spared the State of the Union, and therefore, a really bad hangover. It was (somewhat) reassuring to see some livid polarized response but half the time I feel like these guys are going through the motions. Two ways to disgust yourself tonight are: Crawlspace on IFC and Primetime: Medical Mysteries, enjoy. Tonight - Wednesday - January 24th, 2007 Crawlspace...

Tonight - Monday - January 2nd

One of the firms working on the US-Mexico Border Fence has been fined $5 million for hiring illegal immigrants. This controversy was ironically predicted by comedians such as George Lopez, who jokingly says in his new act, "They want to build a fence along the border to keep out Mexicans, but who's gonna build it?" Answer: Mexicans.

Is LA really that tough of a market that no one can stand out as the perfect fit in morning radio? Is it really that hard to entertain the infamous Los Angeles morning commute? With billboards in LA proclaiming him The King of Free Media, and with KLAC's station manager calling him not just the future of radio but proclaiming that "there is not a more talented performer on the air today," starting Monday,...

After being all 4th of July-ed out, this LAist poster settled in for a mellow night in front of the boob tube. But the network pickings were slim. We're talking skinnier than Nicole Richie.

We all know the Mayor has a mega-watt smile and has been a political celebrity since his election last May but the question remains: does he have comic timing?

While its cool that locals like Alberto Gonzalez, Arturo Moreno, George Lopez, Jorge Ramos, Pablo Alvarado, Mario Molina, Salma Hayek and our mayor make up a third of Time's Top 25 Hispanics in America, we're more interested in some of the quirky information in their poll. For example, Latino is the preferred descriptor in California while the rest of the country seems to prefer Hispanic.
