Schwarzenegger Signing NFL Stadium Bill Right Now

The Governor's Office is webcasting the live the press conference where Schwarzenegger will sign legislation exempting developers from environmental laws, which has delayed the project. The Governor's office calls the project a "green project." Although today's legislation will pave way for this "shovel-ready" and "privately financed" project (that they say will bring 18,000 jobs), the LA Times notes that developers Majestic Realty might have trouble getting "construction loans amid the credit crunch."

Hello, NFL Stadium: Schwarzenegger Expected to Sign Stadium Bill

Tomorrow, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is expected to sign the bill that will exempt developers of the proposed NFL stadium from some environmental laws, reports James Wagner at the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. Once the law goes into affect, Ed Roski's Majestic Realty will be able to break ground on the 600-acre project, which has been delayed a year and one half.

Hollywood High Mourns Loss of Freshman Football Player

Friday's Freshman-Sophomore football game between Hollywood High School and West Adams Prep ended abruptly when player Spencer Juarez collapsed on the sidelines, with just two minutes of play left. The game was halted, and paramedics were called to transport the teen to Children's Hospital. Teammates say "Juarez had just taken a hit, and as he was jogging back to the sidelines, he fell over," but just what caused the student to collapse...

Hollywood High Football Player Dies After Collapsing During Game

A Hollywood High School football player died yesterday afternoon after being hospitalized when he collapsed during Friday night's game against West Adams Prep, according to LA Now.

Beware of the NFL

The NFL and Los Angeles has been a topic ever since the Rams and Raiders up and left town in 1995. Plans to turn the Coliseum and Rose Bowl into NFL stadiums came and fell through. Building a new Downtown LA stadium was laughable. A stadium by Dodger Stadium was counted out. A site on top of a landfill in Carson had the most legs, but in the end proved to be too costly to be practical.

Raiders Fast Track to LA?

According to Chris Myers on Fox Sports Radio on the "Myers and Hartman Show", Myers spoke with NFL insiders saying the Oakland Raiders are the front-runners for moving to Los Angeles. With the proposed Los Angeles Stadium going through the final hurdles before becoming a reality, talk of the NFL returning to Los Angeles after a 15-year absence is starting to be more than rumors. But the Raiders? Make of that what you will.

Did Walnut Feel Pressured to Settle with NFL Stadium Developers?

Although the city of Walnut has settled with the developers of the proposed NFL stadium, the project has yet to get the green light. A lawsuit by a citizen's group is still active and a vote by the Senate, which is expected to pass, should be voted on this week. And now one Walnut councilman is speaking out, according to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.

NFL Stadium Developer Loses $1 Billion in Personal Wealth

That's the current economy for you. Own a lot of property and Forbes Magazine will catch on in their most recent 400 wealthiest Americans list. Developer Ed Roski Jr., CEO of Majestic Realty Company, dropped from No. 163 to No. 236 on the annual list, which has one sports consultant speculating trouble for the proposed NFL stadium in the city of Industry.

NFL Stadium in <s>Los Angeles</s> Industry Closer to Reality

A lawsuit that was delaying the prospect of a National Football League stadium in the city of Industry--some 26 miles east of downtown Los Angeles--was dropped last night by the neighboring city of Walnut in exchange for a number of concessions. Last April, Industry and the city of Diamond Bar settled their lawsuit.

Football & Food's 4-H Club: Happy Hour at Henry's Hat

Food and drink can definitely make football more fun (or for those who prefer their pig skin on the plate and not in a pass, palatable). Henry's Hat (Twitter), the recently opened eatery that sits conveniently in the Cahuenga Pass (you know--between "here" and "there" for those who travel either way over the proverbial hill) has some great Happy Hour offerings, with some extra fun in place for Monday Night Football.

UCLA Football Preview - Injuries, Suspensions and KSU 'Cats

The UCLA Bruins are a team trying to turn the corner on a 4-8 season. So far they are off to a good 2-0 start. The defense has been as advertised while the young offense has been a work in progress. That progress may have been stalled a little with the injury to starting quarterback Kevin Prince in last week's win over Tennessee. But the Bruins and head coach Rick Neuheisel are confident that they can overcome the injuries and other issues to continue the improvement . This week, the 1-1 Kansas State Wildcats come into Pasadena with some issues of their own.

UCLA's Starting QB Out 3-4 Weeks

UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel announced that starting quarterback Kevin Prince will be out 3-4 weeks with a broken jaw. He was injured toward the end of yesterday's game against Tennessee but was able to finish the game by kneeling in the victory formation to seal the win for the Bruins. The fracture is on the right side of his face and was discovered this morning during X-rays.

UCLA Football Wrap Up - Bruins Rocky Top Tough

There weren't a lot of reasons to believe that the Bruins could go into Knoxville and beat Tennessee. They have only won five of their last 22 games away from Pasadena. They were only 3-7-2 on the road against SEC teams. They were too young. The crowd was too big. Tennessee was too angry.

UCLA Football Preview - A Tough Test in Tennessee

This week the UCLA Bruins head east across the Mississippi to Knoxville to face some hungry Vols. After showing some early game jitters against San Diego State last week, the Bruins were able to right the ship and pull away in the end to a comfortable win. They won't have that luxury this week, as they will face a Vols team that is noted for their speedy defense.

10 Reasons Why I Love College Football

Football is such a barbaric game (see: Blount, LeGarrette) that I decided to add some technology on opening night. First I got a high-def TV to distinguish Boise State's blue players from their blue field. Go figure, it was the Oregon Dayglo Ducks that didn't seem to be out there.

10 Reasons Why I Hate College Football

Today marks the first Saturday of the college football season. Millions across the country; especially here in the home of the #4 ranked USC Trojans and the recipient of seven votes in the AP Top 25 - UCLA Bruins, are excited to get the 2009 campaign kicked off. I, on the other hand, could couldn't care less.

Station Fire Won't Cancel UCLA vs. SD State Game

As the Station Fire raged over the weekend, causing air quality to pummel, officials were unsure if a game between UCLA and San Diego State could safely be played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. After consulting university medical staff along with Pasadena officials and air-quality experts, Athletic director Dan Guerrero said the game is on! So now the question is, will the Bruins show up and kick ass?

Lawsuit Names USC, Former Assistant Football Coach

A personal injury lawsuit has been filed in Los Angeles Superior Court against former USC football assistant Dave Watson, as well as the university and a local auto dealership. The plaintiff, Alaric Valentin, was a passenger in a vehicle struck by Watson's car on May 17, 2008. Watson was arrested at the time on suspicion of driving under the influence. The suit alleges that he had taken as many as seven Vicodin and several Soma pills. Valentin's attorney believes the damages (ranging from medical bills to pain and suffering) could run more than $500,000 -- far exceeding the insurance coverage on the accident.

LAUSD Super Fumes Over 'Bruno' Photos

Superintendent Ramon Cortines is going apeshit over photos of Sacha Baron Cohen with Lake Balboa high school football players published as part of a GQ magazine cover story. Cohen's salacious poses with the stars of Birmingham High's football team appear in the middle of this GQ fashion spread.

LA Avengers Fold, Leaving LA Without Football Once Again

Los Angeles just isn't a football city, some might say, and now that includes Arena Football as well. "The Los Angeles Avengers announced Sunday they have terminated their participation in the Arena Football League after playing nine seasons at Staples Center," reports the Press-Telegram.

New NFL Stadium Takes Another Step Towards Reality

The cities of Diamond Bar and Walnut are not exactly thrilled with Industry's plan for a a professional football stadium. But as of last night, Diamond Bar is dropping their objections after approving a settlement with Industry. They will get $20 million to deal with increased traffic from the stadium, $1 million for a middle school athletic field and $700,000 a year for community facilities as long as the stadium remains in operation, reported the Associated Press. A suit filed by Walnut to stop the construction is still pending.

Your Path to Playing for America's Team Begins Tomorrow

Much like America, the team commonly referred to as America's Team has fallen on some hard times. The Dallas Cowboys ended a drama-filled 2008 season on the wrong end of a 44-6 beat down courtesy of the Philadelphia Eagles in a must-win Week 17 game. The last time the 'boys won a playoff game, quarterback Tony Romo was 16 and Bill Clinton was in the White House.

LAist Interview: Dan Clark aka Nitro of the American Gladiators

Dan Clark was a brutal force on the football field and in the Gladiator arena. In his book Gladiator: A True Story of 'Roids, Rage and Redemption, which he will be signing copies of tonight at Book Soup, the man better known to many as Nitro, gives a brutally honest account of his life and 20 year love affair with steroids.

In the preview of the Super Bowl I wrote on Saturday, I predicted the worst. I thought the Arizona Cardinal defense would have no answers to the Pittsburgh Steelers defense, and the Steelers led by their inept offensive line would just bumble through the game. Fortunately for all the football fans and bystanders on Sunday my predicted score of 3-2 didn’t happen.

Let’s be frank about the Super Bowl. Despite all the hype that surrounds the game it usually is a dud of a game.

Avoid Making it the 'Stupid' Bowl: Don't Drink & Drive

No matter which team you're rooting for, if you're headed out tomorrow to celebrate the Super Bowl, don't get all stupid about it. "Law enforcement officers around Southern California will be on the lookout for drunk drivers on Super Bowl Sunday," reports abc7.com. That doesn't mean you can't party, it just means you should plan to party responsibly, or face the consequences; "The CHP and local law enforcement organizations will deploy extra DUI patrols," and they have no qualms about issuing citations and making arrests. Of course, landing your drunk ass in jail is a far better fate than what can happen, or what has happened in the past: "Last year on Super Bowl Sunday, 12 people were killed and 167 others were injured in alcohol-related traffic accidents statewide."

NFL Stadium for City of Industry or City of Los Angeles?

A $5 million bond will be voted on by residents in the City of Industry, population, 800. If passed, it will pay for practice fields, restaurants, banquet facilities, offices and the stadium, the LA Times says today in a report about the proposed and controversial stadium. Fearing traffic and noise, the cities of Diamond Bar and Walnut don't want a stadium in the neighboring city. And Los Angeles would rather not see it in Industry either--after all, we don't need another Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim going on here, do we? (The Los Angeles Smokestakes of Industry?) Ed Roski, the developer, said last September that we'll see the NFL here in September 2009. Well, good luck!

Should Bailed Out Citibank be Sponsoring the Rose Bowl?

Over $300 billion in bailout money from the government and the next place you see Citigroup's money is towards a major sponsorship of a football game. Good advertising move or waste? The money to secure their sponsorship was spent long ago, but they should still be publicly humiliated, right? We hear that in every time out a new stat about Citi's epic fail will be announced and it will be scrolled across the scoreboard as the band plays the theme from Titanic. Or something like that.

Has the Recession Hit the Rose Bowl?

Are USC fans bored of going to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena? Tomorrow the Trojans take on the Penn State Nittany Lions in the "grandaddy of them all." But it looks like tickets are still available, and some are even being sold under face value. The game is a contractual sellout, so tickets will be gone by the time the teams take to the gridiron tomorrow. However, the Pasadena Star-News reported that tickets were being sold for $100 each a few days ago. Today on Stub Hub, they're being advertised for $175 and up. So why the anticlimactic atmosphere for this Rose Bowl game? Is it a case of the same old, same old or is the economy robbing us of football fever? / Photo by BinaryLA via LAist's flickr pool.
