JetBlue to Land First LAX Flight This Morning

Popular low-cost carrier JetBlue debuts their new service to LAX this morning, as they are scheduled to land their inaugural flight from New York's JFK at 10:45. It's been a bit of a wait, however, for the airline to begin service from our major airport; today's launch comes after "a yearlong delay," caused by a period of soaring fuel prices that made cross-country air travel costly, reports the Daily Breeze.

Big Top Tent Pitched for Cirque Berzerk 20-Show Run

If you've been by Los Angeles State Historic Park in the past week, you've likely noticed a gigantic red-and-white-striped big top tent. Perhaps you wondered why a tent would be necessary in LA, the stationary circus town in which you live.

Man Makes Threat on Plane, Passengers Take Him Down at LAX

A man who apparently made a bomb threat and tried to open the back door of a Delta plane as it was landing at Los Angeles International Airport today. "The passenger is reported to have made a threat aboard the plane and was subdued by passengers," LAX officials said in a statement. "The incident is under investigation by FBI agents and Los Angeles Airport Police."

The world's largest passenger jet, the double-decker, 489-seat Airbus A380, is scheduled to land at LAX at 9:15 a.m. After the plane arrives, 200 to 250 invited guests will get a two-hour "familiarization'' flight. The jumbo airliner was the first to be delivered to Emirates Airlines, which will begin a nonstop LAX-Dubai service this fall (on a Boeing 777). The We regret to report that LAist has yet to receive an invitation for said "familiarization," leading us to not really care. Toulouse, France-based Airbus first exhibited the A380 at LAX in March 2007.

An American Airlines Boeing 757 made an emergency landing today at LAX due to smoke reported by the pilot. The flight carrying passengers from San Francisco to Miami was also carrying hazardous materials, but, at first it was unknown if they were the cause the incident that diverted the plane to the airport. Later, FAA officials said that the material was hydrochloric acid and it was not the cause -- it probably came from a recently serviced hydraulic system. All passengers disembarked from the plane safely at Terminal 4, said LAX Spokesman Marshall Lowe to LAist. Passengers are now being booked on other flights.

LAistory is a series that takes us on a journey to what came before to help us understand where we are today. So far we've been to Val Verde (the "Black Palm Springs"), Thelma Todd's Roadside Cafe, a house in Beverly Hills, Echo Park's Bonnie Brae House, and the long-gone Marineland of the Pacific. Now we're taking to the skies and flying back to the Golden Era of air travel right here in Glendale...

A Southwest flight and a Skywest turboprop had a close call runway incursion Sunday morning. Albeit considered minor, it was the eighth such incident since October.

Burbank residents who live in the vicinity of Bob Hope Airport may soon see relief in the nighttime hours from cargo plane flight activity if a proposed mandatory curfew is endorsed by the public and approved by the FAA.
