Largo at the Coronet 'Duets' Benefit for St. Jude's to Feature Fiona Apple, Jon Brion, John C. Reilly and More

Largo at the Coronet has hosted many benefits over the years, and the one this Saturday will feature Largo's first-ever evening of duets, with the proceeds going to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Largo owner Mark Flanagan told LAist that the evening will include a number of duets that Fiona Apple and Jon Brion have been working on, in addition to pairings featuring artists such as John C. Reilly, Tom Brosseau, Mike Viola and a surprise guest or two.

Tonight In Rock: 2 Live Crew, Pennywise, The Watkins Family Hour, Meiko

Tonight legendary Miami-based hip hop group 2 Live Crew will be performing at the Key Club in Hollywood. Hermosa Beach's own punk rockers Pennywise are poised to headline Club Nokia in Downtown with Kailua Kona-based rock-reggae act Pepper in tow. And, lastly, local singer-songwriter Meiko will be making a relatively last minute appearance at the Hotel Café alongside Butterfly Boucher and Carina Round. But we strongly suggest heading over to Largo at the Coronet for Watkins Family Hour (LAist Review). As mentioned previously, local Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Fiona Apple, Tom Brosseau and actor John C. Reilly, among a few other surprise guests, are slated to jam with former Nickel Creek fiddler Sara Watkins (LAist Interview) and her guitar-toting brother Sean (LAist Interview).

Fiona Apple to Make Surprise Appearance at Largo

As if Joe Cocker, Erykah Badu, Peaches and the Field weren't enough to make you salivate, LAist just got word that local Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Fiona Apple—everyone's favorite lil' brooding princess—will be making a surprise appearance this Wednesday at Largo at the Coronet for Watkins Family Hour (LAist Review). The fairly regular, familial occasion, which is hosted by former Nickel Creek fiddler Sara Watkins (LAist Interview) and her guitar-toting brother Sean (LAist Interview), will also feature prominent guest musicians like Tom Brosseau and actor John C. Reilly. To put it simply: You'll want to be there just for bragging rights, if not the music. This is not a night to be missed, so make sure you plan accordingly!

Tonight In Rock: Fiona Apple, Ben Lee, Meiko, Yacht

Tonight Australian singer-songwriter Ben Lee will be performing at Largo at the Coronet's Little Room. The Roxy is playing host to a slew of DFA artists, including Portland-based one-man band Yacht, the Juan Maclean, Tim Sweeney and Tim Goldsworthy. LA-based singer-songwriter Meiko (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4, #5) will be playing at the Hotel Café for the second night in a row with LAist favorite Obi Best (LAist Interview, Review, #2) slated to open. On the early side of things, Scottish rockers Glasvegas are poised to take over Amoeba Records. And, lastly, LA-based psych rock outfit the Entrance Band will be headlining the Troubadour with Indian Jewelry and the Growlers in tow. But we insist that you head over to the Largo at the Coronet to catch LA's most beautiful and forlorn figure Fiona Apple.

If you haven't caught a show at Largo at the Coronet yet, now might be a good time. Their recently posted, insanely good schedule for the next three months includes performers such as Randy Newman, Loudon Wainwright III, Joan as Police Woman, Maya Rudolph & Fred Armisen, Patton Oswalt, Sarah Silverman, Janeane Garofalo, Jon Brion, The Ditty Bops, Colin Hay, The Watkins Family Hour feat. Fiona Apple & Dan Wilson, Greg Proops and Flight of the Conchords.

Just surfacing amongst the depths of the Pitchfork servers comes the prospect of an unreleased P.T. Anderson short film featuring our beloved Elliott Smith.

It’s easy to forget that there’s a thriving literary scene here in LA. It’s also easy to lose sight of the fact that there are people who are committed to doing good, making change and making the city a better place for the next generation. 826LA manages to combine all of these things at once. The brainchild of hipster deity Dave Eggers, the family of non-profits now known as 826 National was originated in...

Thursday night's Watkins Family Hour performance at Largo was a humdinger. At one point, they must have broken some kind of a Largo record, because they fit NINE people on that tiny platform. Throughout the three-hour set, eight additional performers joined Sean and Sara Watkins on the stage. The lineup included Fiona Apple, Benmont Tench, Glen Phillips, Greg Leisz, Mike Elizondo, Willie Watson, Jay Bellerose and Dave Rawlings. They performed more than 20 songs...

The Fiona Apple comparisons are inevitable. As soon as Sara Bareilles opens her mouth, she reveals the vocal depth of Apple with the pop sensibility of Rachael Yamagata and Regina Spektor and the soulful sultriness of Norah Jones and Feist. In fact, on her website, she says: "I write mostly on piano and I'm a girl, so lots of people say it's Norah Jones, or Fiona Apple. That's fine. I love Norah's subtlety and...

Over the last few months, there have been rumblings about a possible Largo concert film. And 24 hours ago, a trailer popped up on YouTube that confirmed it all. Produced by Largo owner Mark Flanagan and Andrew van Baal, the film will be sure to highlight the intimate magic of this unassuming venue on Fairfax Ave. Featuring snippets of performances by Jon Brion, Fiona Apple, Paul F. Tompkins, Zach Galifianakis, Nickel Creek, Grant Lee...

From the first beat of “Silver Lining”, Rilo Kiley announces a truly more adventurous sound – one that departs from country-tinged acoustics and embraces slick beats with a retro flair. Under the Blacklight, the first effort from the band since 2004, is Rilo Kiley’s unapologetic brush with the dance floor. On the first track, the deliriously catchy “Silver Lining”, Rilo Kiley boasts a sound somewhere between techno and soul. Over handclaps and an R&B...

Ms. Apple wrote the following message on her website today and because it's for such a good cause - to help fund her soundman Gungi's fight against Cancer, I decided to post it here as well. (I also altered her grammar a bit. She,likes,to,avoid, spaces) I'm writing to put word out that I am doing two shows at Largo on March 5th & 9th, for my wonderful friend, Gungi. Fri 4/21 - Dinosaur Jr @ Troubadour (SOLD OUT) – Here’s a show for the aging indie rocker. That first reunion show a year ago at Spaceland was a little disappointing (packed and a billion degrees inside). While Green Mind and Where You Been are still the best Dinosaur records, the first three with Lou Barlow have some great moments too. The show on Saturday night is sold out too.

After six years of silence, ditched efforts and leaked MP3s, the brooding songbird has returned with a formidable offering. Of course, diehard Fiona
Apple
fans have already sampled the early sessions of "Extraordinary
Machine." Earlier this year, her dedicated fan base created a special website, dubbed "Free
Fiona
". Then, fans
subsequently leaked 11 [unreleased] tracks across the internet. This was
not done to thwart Apple, but rather to force her record
label (Epic) to release the shelved material.

Epic was only partially to blame for the lethargic release. Apple, too, was
reportedly displeased with the early cut of the album, which was produced
by Jon Brion. The "Free
Fiona" campaign propelled both Apple and her label to finish the
album. She subsequently regrouped with producer Mike Elizondo to re-conceptualize
9 songs. Only the title
cut
and "Waltz
(Better Than Fine)
" remain from the Brion effort. Regardless of the particulars,
we're happy
"Extraordinary
Machine
" saw the light of day.
