The Top 10 Hardest Places to Film in L.A.

With runaway production affecting the local economy, Los Angeles wants filming to come back home. Last month, the city council adopted a motion that brought 19 ideas to the table that would hopefully entice more local filming. One of those tasks was to identify the ten hardest places to film in. And in record time--less than a month, that's saying something for a city report--that list was just released.

Film Shoots Still Down in L.A., Says Report

Although there were some gains in features and commercial shoots, overall film-production dropped in the third quarter of 2009 compared to 2008, according to statistics released yesterday. In all, there were 9,680 permitted production days from July to September compared to 11,300 recorded in the same time period last year--that's a 14.3 percent drop.

19 Ways that Could Bring the Film Industry Back to L.A.

On-location shoots for advertisements may be on the rise, but filming in Los Angeles has been on the downtrend for some years now, thanks to incentives that lured shoots to Alabama, New York City, Canada and elsewhere. That might be good for complaining neighbors, but it's not for the larger picture that is Los Angeles' economy.

In recent weeks, Los Angeles seems to be the “it” city when it comes to becoming eco-friendly. First, Gov. Schwarzenegger held the Global Climate Summit in Beverly Hills. Shortly thereafter, Mayor Villarigosa announced plans for Solar LA in his continued effort under GREEN LA. Although the filming is taking part under the auspices of a state-level plan to keep film and television productions local, people like the Mayor of Rialto are worried the freeway closure will negatively affect local businesses. According to the report, the city was not notified of the 210 closure until Thursday.

It's one-thirty in the morning and Harvard Avenue is empty of vehicles. Residents stand huddled on the sidewalk. "Are they coming back?" they murmur plaintively, asking anybody or perhaps nobody. "Temporary No Parking" signs are still posted which, along with a bit or confusion and resentment on the part of the residents, is all that remains as evidence that a Film Crew has been in possession of the street for the last 30 hours....

It's well known that before there was "Hollywood," there was Edendale, home of Mack Sennett's Keystone Studios but lately the indie film shooting hot spot in 90026/39 seems to be Echo Park Lake. It's not like Echo Park suddenly reemerged on the live set scene following the excellent, filmed-throughout-Echo-Park Quinceañera, in fact, we're sure that numerous films have filmed key scenes at the home of the Lotus Fest and Dragon Boat Races. Last month,...
