Police Checked Apartment Before Woman was Murdered

More details are coming out about the unfortunate murder in Mid-City last night in which a woman was murdered by her estranged boyfriend. According to an LAPD statement, 30-year-old Flor Medrano flagged down officers on patrol yesterday evening after she was threatened and assaulted the day before.

LAPD Gives Woman Ride Home Where She is Stabbed, Killed

In an unusual and unfortuante story, a woman who arrived at police station around midnight to file a domestic violence report died soon after officers gave her a ride home, says the LA Times. After dropping her off at her apartment, near Pico and Cochran in Mid-City, officers stayed outside filling out a crime report inside their patrol car. At the same time, the woman was attacked by the man inside the apartment. Screams were heard and someone ran outside to inform police of the attack. Once inside, officers found the man stabbing the woman and shot him. Both were taken to the hospital where they died. Schwarzenegger's Budget Cuts to Domestic Violence Has Closed 6 Shelters So Far

State Parks are not closing after all, but at least six domestic violence shelters around the state have closed due to a small, but devastating budget cut by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger over the summer. That's according to the Domestic Violence Center of the Santa Clarita Valley, which came close to being the seventh such closure.

Creepy! Cop Uses Confidential Database for Dates

An Orange County Police Sergeant has been on administrative leave since May over a domestic violence call, but now officials are finding that he used law enforcement databases for dates and to look up rival men. Sgt. Bill Arganda of the Westminster Police Department stands accused of searching the database some 4,000 times and has been accused of domestic violence twice. Of those databases searches, there were "a blond Fox news correspondent, a woman from a gym class, a mother from his daughter's kindergarten class, his ex-wife and ex-girlfriends as well as the new men in their lives," according to the Orange County Register, which dives into the Arganda's history. He is an 18-year veteran.

18-Year-Old Girl Killed by Boyfriend in SCV, Politicians Move to Bring Back Domestic Violence Funding

Last month, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger eliminated full funding--a mere $16.3 million--for domestic violence programs in the state. Highlighting the need for such a program, an 18-year-old girl was killed in her bed in the Santa Clarita Valley last Sunday. Her boyfriend allegedly committed the murder inside the family trailer in the Canyon Country neighborhood. That was the third domestic violence death for the valley in a year's time.

Actor Tom Sizemore Arrested for Domestic Violence

Speaking of domestic violence, Actor Tom Sizemore was arrested on those charges late last night. Police picked him up on the 100 block of Beaudry Avenue around 10:45 p.m. He remained in jail this morning in lieu of a $20,000 bail. "Over the last few years, Sizemore, 47, has developed a troubled history with the law," says the LA Times. "In August 2003 he was convicted of misdemeanor charges of physically abusing and harassing his ex-girlfriend, the former 'Hollywood Madam' Heidi Fleiss. In February 2005 Sizemore failed a court-ordered drug test after he was caught trying to use a prosthetic penis to defeat a urine test and was ordered into drug rehabilitation for two years." He was arrested in 2007 for possessing methamphetamine.

Feds Help Local Domestic Violence Shelters with Grants

While Schwarzenegger slashed 100% of funding for domestic violence in California, the Department of Justice today announced that Recovery Act money is heading to a handful of grants to domestic violence shelters in California, including two in Southern California. House of Ruth, Inc in Los Angeles County received $500,000 and $520,755 was awarded to the Southern California Alcohol and Drug Program headquartered in Downey.

Schwarzenegger Cut 100% of Domestic Violence Funding, One Local Shelter Likely to Close

State parks may be threatened, but worse is the total elimination of domestic violence funding in the 2009/10 budget signed by Governor Schwarzenegger. It was a surprise to many when he added nearly a half billion in extra cuts including more to parks and to various health programs on Tuesday. The Domestic Violence Center in the Santa Clarita Valley is the only agency that provides domestic violence services in the 200-square mile valley. As a result of Schwarzenegger's cut, which is immediate, they've lost 45%, or $207,222.00, of their annual funding

The answer is yes, there was good chance that these two domestic violence related homicides could have been prevented. If it took place in another part of the city, say the Van Nuys area, Eagle Rock, Hollywood, South LA, or even the Pacific Palisades, something maybe could have been done. Though, in Tunjunga where two murders took place yesterday, under the jurisdiction of the the LAPD's Foothill Division, the funding just wasn't there for a program known for its "homicide prevention."
