Re-arranging the cavernous Diavolo Dance Space to seat the audience on all four sides of the "stage," the California Touring Project opened our eyes to some inventive and entertaining new dances. Choreographed and performed by artists from both the north and the south of our golden Mecca, the evening was filled with samples of good dancing, creative minds and solid performances.

CARS: The LA Auto Show begins today at Staples Center and runs through Dec. 30. It's one of the biggest car shows in the world. The show closes at 10 pm tonight. Tickets are $10.

Bradley Michaud’s Method Contemporary Dance Company opened up its fourth season with a three-night stand at the Diavolo Dance Space in the Brewery Arts Complex this past weekend. Having seen last year’s evening length premiere, I was happy to see the choreographer’s growth as a dance maker and the evolution of his company.

Bradley Michaud's Method Contemporary Dance Company is opening up its season with "Remarkaly Content Free" at the Diavolo Space this weekend. Presenting three premieres and one work from the repertory (all choreographed by Michaud), the company of eight relishes the off-center, high speed world of sheer abandon without a need to embellish with artifice or explanation.

Director/choreographer/performer Liz Hoefner seems to bring her life to the stage. While this isn't a new or different way of making theater, Ms. Hoefner's life is filled with humorous moments that surround the challenges of being alive in our 21st century.

Local independent dance artist Liz Hoefner has directed and choreographed Fear of Drowning/Fear of Flying and will present its premiere this Friday through Sunday at the Diavolo Dance Space in the Brewery Arts Complex. According to her, the new dance theater work is a collection of stories, dialogues and dances that relate to actual and metaphorical fears of traveling, flying, drowning and dying in a post 9/11, tsunami, and Hurricane Katrina world. The cast of eight dancers, five actors and two musicians will explore the origins of fear in comic and tragic dance theater.

The LA Improv Dance Festival exploded onto the downtown scene last week with classes and jams from Tuesday on though the weekend. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, audiences were treated to some amazing performances by the workshop faculty and local dancers/improvisers. I was lucky enough to get there on Friday night for the In-Site Collaboration Performance.

Jazz performers improvise in front of an audience all of the time. At each sitting, different combinations of instruments and players create unique variations of existing sounds and tunes or develop something brand new to our ears. It’s thrilling to listen to the artists search for their individuality within the known arrangement of tones, scales, rhythms and meters. Or, it can fall flat. Still, when you bring the best together, even flat can be amazing and beautiful.
