Diamond Bar Brush Fire Appears to be Started by Pickup Truck

It appears that this afternoon's fast-moving fire in Diamond Bar was not caused intentionally, but by a pickup truck that had a small fire its bed. One story is that an burning debris was flying out of the bed of the truck, unbeknownst to the driver and passenger. Another is that a faulty cadyilac converter was sending sparks out from under the truck, according to KCAL-TV. Nevertheless, the truck and people inside have been detained by LA County Sheriff's Deputies.

Brush Fire Breaks Out in Diamond Bar, Arson Speculated

A large fire this afternoon is burning right next to homes in Diamond Bar, about one-half mile from the 60 freeway, reports KABC-TV. It began around 11:45 a.m. Because there are several different start points, the word "arson" is being thrown around a lot, but not by officials. There are no evacuations at this point and no reports of damage or injuries. Update: The cause of the fires might be from a pickup truck. More info here.

NFL Stadium in <s>Los Angeles</s> Industry Closer to Reality

A lawsuit that was delaying the prospect of a National Football League stadium in the city of Industry--some 26 miles east of downtown Los Angeles--was dropped last night by the neighboring city of Walnut in exchange for a number of concessions. Last April, Industry and the city of Diamond Bar settled their lawsuit.

New NFL Stadium Takes Another Step Towards Reality

The cities of Diamond Bar and Walnut are not exactly thrilled with Industry's plan for a a professional football stadium. But as of last night, Diamond Bar is dropping their objections after approving a settlement with Industry. They will get $20 million to deal with increased traffic from the stadium, $1 million for a middle school athletic field and $700,000 a year for community facilities as long as the stadium remains in operation, reported the Associated Press. A suit filed by Walnut to stop the construction is still pending.

NFL Stadium for City of Industry or City of Los Angeles?

A $5 million bond will be voted on by residents in the City of Industry, population, 800. If passed, it will pay for practice fields, restaurants, banquet facilities, offices and the stadium, the LA Times says today in a report about the proposed and controversial stadium. Fearing traffic and noise, the cities of Diamond Bar and Walnut don't want a stadium in the neighboring city. And Los Angeles would rather not see it in Industry either--after all, we don't need another Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim going on here, do we? (The Los Angeles Smokestakes of Industry?) Ed Roski, the developer, said last September that we'll see the NFL here in September 2009. Well, good luck!

The Los Angeles County Fire Department has lifted the mandatory evacuation for the affected areas of the Country Estates and Diamond Bar. "The threat of fire has decreased and firefighters continue to make good progress on containment," a statement from the department read. "Progress has been made along the west side of the 57 Freeway and along the base of the Boy Scout Reservation. Firefighter continues to work on the containment within the fire line."

Due to the Triangle Complex Fire (sometimes referred to as the Freeway Complex Fire) that has affected the areas of Corona, Yorba Linda, Anaheim Hills, Chino Hills, Brea Canyon, and Diamond Bar there remain several freeway closures. The following closures are currently in effect: 57 Freeway between Lambert Road and the 60 Freeway; 71 Southbound at Pine to the West 91 connector; 241 Northbound from Santiago to the 91 Freeway; 91 Westbound to the Southbound 241. Motorists are encouraged to stay away from the burn areas and to leave the streets as clear as possible so that evacuees can make swift exits and emergency personnel can reach the affected areas with ease.

The fire that broke out Saturday in Corona near Green River Road and the 91 Riverside Freeway has now been dubbed the "Freeway Complex" fire or the "Triangle Freeway" fire because of the broad stretch of land in three counties--Riverside (Corona), Orange (Yorba Linda, Anaheim Hills), and San Bernardino (Chino Hills)--in which it is blazing. A fire in nearby Brea is being connected to this fire, and now threatens the neighboring community of Diamond Bar, which would then involve a fourth county, Los Angeles.

So far this weekend in the Southland there have been several major freeway accidents that led to injuries, deaths, arrests, and shutdowns.

We're lucky, because despite the crummy weather we can all tuck in at home and stay nice and dry this holiday Monday. Even our trusty mailmen and women get to rest today. But if you haven't stocked up on the Netflix or gotten an Xbox, you might be tempted to do what tons of people did this weekend and head to the ArcLight, which we note is much the worse for wear.

We'll save you all the shnizzle speak, but our favorite Dogg - Snoop - has set up "A Very Special Night with Snoop Dogg, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Friends in Concert." Scheduled for August 25 at the Greek Theatre, all proceeds from the concert will benefit the Snoop Youth Football League, created for kids who might otherwise not have access to organized sports. The young playahs must keep up their grade to remain eligible.

Maybe local politicians aren't so boring after all. The Daily News says that US Congressman Gary Miller of the 42nd District -- which covers Diamond Bar, Whittier, La Habra Heights and Rowland Heights in LA County -- got into a shoving match with a CNN cameraman. Apparently after being manhandled by the cameraman, who must've wanted a better shot of Arnold, Miller pushed back saying, "do it again, push me again."
