Tonight In Rock: The Roots, The Glitch Mob, The Deadly Syndrome, Cotton Jones

Tonight Philadelphia-based Grammy Award-winning hip hop band the Roots and Long Island-bred hip hop act De La Soul will be performing at the Hollywood Palladium with none other than Common, Ludacris and Nas. LA-based DJ collective the Glitch Mob (LAist Review), among many other electronic acts, are poised to take on the 15th annual Nocturnal Festival at the NOS Events Center in good ole San Bernadino. And, lastly, local indie rockers the Deadly Syndrome (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4) will be headlining the El Rey Theatre for this year's Tarfest. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch the phoenix that rose from the ashes of Page France, Maryland-based indie folk act Cotton Jones. Oliver Future are slated to kick things off.

Seven Questions with Kenan Bell, Teacher by Day/Rapper by Night

When Kenan Bell isn't in the classroom of a local Montessori school teaching youngsters language arts, he's on stage schooling crowds with his own unique brand of hip-hop that blends indie-rock with electronica, a style URB called "his very own genre of nu-gaze, emo-hip-hop." In March, the La Crescenta native put on full display his eclectic musical taste and range when he dropped the “Good News: The Mix-Tape,” which features remixes of songs by artists as wide-ranging as Pink Floyd, Lily Allen, Gang Gang Dance, Jose Gonzalez, Peter, Bjorn & John, Duran Duran, and Neil Diamond. Yes, you read that right, Neil Diamond.

Tonight In Rock: Erykah Badu, Dredg, Justin Townes Earle, Mike Stinson

Tonight Los Gatos-based prog rockers Dredg will be concluding a sold-out two-night stint at the Troubadour with Miami's own metal heads Torche in tow. Nashville-based country singer-songwriter Justin Townes Earle is poised to take on McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica. And, lastly, local country troubadour Mike Stinson is poised to rock early on at Redwood Bar & Grill in Downtown. But we strongly suggest heading over to UCLA Intramural Field to catch the opening night of the Jazz & Reggae Festival. Not only will legendary multiple Grammy Award-winning soul singer-songwriter Erykah Badu be gracing us with her presence, but LAist favorites De La Soul, Nino Moschella and People Under the Stairs will be performing as well.

Tonight (10pm) marks the fifth annual installment of VH-1's Hip Hop Honors, a program saluting the contributions of the genre's pioneers and players. This year's honorees include: De La Soul, Slick Rick, Naughty by Nature, Too Shot and Los Angeles' own Cypress Hill.

LAist loves free shows, spring time festivals, good music and Trojans so we nearly shit a brick when we heard about the USC SpringFest 2008 this Saturday, which will have one bad ass line-up including Lupe Fiasco, De La Soul, Saosin, Del tha Funkee Homosapien, The Aquabats, just to name a few.

If we could split ourselves in two we'd be at both Spaceland AND the Troubadour tonight but one Gossip does not equal three awesome bands. Yet. Year Long Disaster, The Binges, Shapes of Race Cars @ Spaceland The Gossip @ The Troubadour De La Soul, KRS-One @ Key Club Mew @ Henry Fonda Theater Nikka Costa @ Largo The Dan Band @ Avalon Ringside, Whitestarr, Grand Marquee @ Roxy Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips...

Big F*ckin Deal, The Cheat, Buffalo Roam @ Safari Sam's

The Yardbirds circa 1967 Steve Vai and Jerry Cantrell are the only official guitarists listed for this Yardbirds "reunion", but don't be surprised if other legends decide to sit in with original drummer, Jim McCarty, and rhythm guitarist, Chris Dreja. The Yardbirds, The Flash Express, Rolling Blackouts @ The Knitting Factory The Little Ones, Sea Wolf, The Temporary Thing @ The Troubadour De La Soul, KRS One @ The Canyon The Motels, Berlin @...

FRIDAY

It's nice to know that, this weekend, people won't be complaining about the "Air" in Los Angeles, but embracing them at The Hollywood Bowl instead.
