Back on April 30, 2006 the Dodgers played the Pads in San Diego leading 5-0 going into the bottom of the ninth. Lance Carter comes out to pitch for the Dodgers and loaded the bases by giving up two singles and a walk with no outs. The Dodger’s then-closer Danys Baez tried to get out of the jam but gave up a single, two walks and two sacrifices to tie the game up 5-5....

1. Two words: Hall of Fame shoo-in Greg Maddux (328 wins) is pitching like a HOF shoo-in. Two earned runs in 12 innings isn't bad for an old man who looks like Ferris Bueller. 2. When Rafael Furcal is hitting homers (three in the last 12 games), the big Dodger in the sky is smiling down on you. 3. Just like "Moneyball" says, spending big bucks on closers is silly. Much love to Game...

There's a rumor going around A's circles that Milton Bradley has super powers, chief among them the ability to cause otherwise sensible general managers to trade him for valuable prospects, in this case, Andre Ethier. Ethier's had some very good moments in a Dodger uniform lately, including his 4-5 night in Monday's 10-4 pounding of the Snakes, and a solo homer in yesterday's 5-4 victory. Brad Penny notched a career-best 10-2 start with yesterday's win.

The series' oddest moment no doubt came in Tuesday's 11-3 blowout, a game in which Nomar Garciaparra got hit by pitches three different times by three different pitchers. As is required by custom, retaliation came against ex-Dodger Shawn Green, but Danys Baez hit Luis Gonzalez the next day; in all, seven batters got plunked in three games, an unusually high total.

With five days before the trade deadline, giving up with just a five-game deficit would probably wreck the psyche of a franchise already walking a public relations tightrope. The public and the media might understand trading away Jeff Weaver and Jeff Kent with an eight-game deficit, but not five. The Padres have looked so horrible lately, that it's possible the Dodgers are just one or two decent additions away from backing into the playoffs. And when you get into the playoffs, anything can happen.
