An ever-increasing workload, the recession’s effect on one’s monthly Amoeba habit, a rapidly approaching membership into the “mid-thirties” club - a million and one reasons to stop seeing live music as frequently as my liver could once withstand. But last year’s SXSW/Coachella springtime juggernaut left its indelible mark and a few bands moved to the top of the “must see again and again” list, Cut Copy’s electropop/dance rock eking out the top spot. Who doesn’t love a band you can jump around to? It’s like everything good about the 90s rave scene (without the glow sticks and wide-legged pants, natch) served up with a side of early 80s nu-wave synth.

Tonight LA-based singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles (LAist Review) will be performing to a sold-out crowd at the Hotel Café. Pennsylvania-bred experimental folk outfit Akron/Family are poised to play the second night of a three-date stint at the Steve Allen Theater. And, lastly, San Franciscan alt-rockers Birds & Batteries will be playing at the the Smell. But we strongly suggest you do whatever it takes to catch Melbourne-based electro pop buzz band Cut Copy, who will be concluding a sold-out two-date stint at the Henry Fonda Music Box Club Nokia (note the last minute venue change). Brooklyn's own dance punk duo Matt & Kim are slated to kick off the show.
Tonight legendary British rockers the Pretenders will be performing at the Wiltern. Melbourne's own electro pop buzz band Cut Copy are poised to headline the Henry Fonda Music Box with Brooklyn-based duo Matt & Kim in tow. And, lastly, local indie rockers Foreign Born will be making their triumphant return to the Echo before heading out for SXSW. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch Danish glitch rockers Efterklang. LA-based indie rock outfit Eulogies are slated to kick the show off.
December is list-making season. And for us music journalists, it is a time to look back on scores of albums, reflect upon the music and recapitulate our favorites. This year we asked some of the staffers what inspired them. The prompt was not limited to albums that came out in 2008.
Tonight LA will be seized by festivals. Now in its third year, the LA Weekly's Detour Festival will be taking over the area around City Hall in Downtown. We're excited for Aussie electro-pop sensation Cut Copy, epic LA-based prog-rockers the Mars Volta, English folk rockers Noah and the Whale and DFA Records's latest and greatest, Hercules and Love Affair. The lineup is enticing, but certainly not for everyone. We had a rather traumatic experience last year involving Justice and drunken buffoons. It did not go over well. The 10th Annual Eagle Rock Music Festival, which takes place on Colorado Blvd. between Eagle Rock Blvd. and Argus St., boasts some 74 acts on 16 stages—the most comprehensive bill of local bands we've ever seen. We're excited for Abe Vigoda, Mika Miko (LAist Review), the Antarcticans, Gangi (LAist Review), and the Ship Collective's mainstay Earlimart. Need we mention that it's still free? And although it will be our festival pick of the night, we'd like to suggest a show for those who aren't interested in crowds. Head on over to Spaceland to catch Brooklyn-based folk songstress Rio en Medio. Tonight will serve as the record release party for her second full-length, Frontier. It will be the start of what promises to be a very successful career.
Luckily, since SXSW Music officially starts on Wednesday, tonight's massive line-up of residencies is hardly affected, save for The Voom Blooms who are replaced by We Barbarians and others at the Viper Room tonight (full list of tonight's residencies after the jump). However, the exodus of Los Angeles based bands is upon us.

| Local Rock | Irving Download: I Can't Fall In Love From: I Hope You're Feeling Better Now. With a lyrical nod to Silver Lake and a song that any lovelorn Angeleno can relate to, Irving's "I Can't Fall In Love" is hard to resist. Check out free streams on myspace. |

Copy Download: Future From: Bright Like Neon Love. Play this after a night on the town. Cut Copy pulls inspiration from 80s synth and 90s techno, but has a sophistication that warrants a return listen. |

Ferdinand Download: Do You Want To From: You Could Have it So Much Better. After a few listens, the answer to the title will be an emphatic "yes." Ferdinand's latest offering is, in a word, infectious. You'll either thank us or curse us for suggesting it. |

Apple Download: title track From: Extraordinary Machine. This track is quirky and uncharacteristically optimistic. It reveals that Apple can do more than brood. Extraordinary Machine also shows off her vocal chops, which are formidable indeed. |

| 80s/90s Retro | INXS Download: Need You Tonight From: KICK. Blame it on CBS, blame it on nostalgia... but we still love old school INXS. While some people may be digging Pretty Vegas, we still think there's no replacement for Michael. |
