CHP Officer May Have Killed Husband After Domestic Dispute

Authorities are investigating what led up to a California Highway Patrol officer fatally shooting her husband last night at their home in Compton. The unnamed CHP officer has not been arrested or charged as of yet, according to abc7.com, and "Sheriff's officials say it will be up to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office to charge the officer in her husband's death." The officer was reportedly off-duty when the incident occurred, and authorities believe the shooting came following a domestic dispute between she and her spouse, 31-year-old Marcus Lavar Lemons. Lemons "was pronounced dead at the scene after being shot once in the chest." Early reports indicate the officer may have acted in self-defense.

Weird Los Angeles: The Curious Cavorting Coffin

Here's a very strange incident that took place at a house in the Compton area during the Fall of 1976.

The Los Angeles Police Department's Chief Bill Bratton has announced that crime is down compared to this time last year. According to abc7.com, "The most dramatic drop was seen in murders involving gang members. Bratton said those homicides have dropped 26.6 percent. Overall, homicide is down 8.7 percent. The number of rapes committed saw a 14 percent drop, and overall violent crime is down nearly 5 percent." Just last week a record number of Compton residents opted to trade in their guns for gift cards, signaling perhaps less of a trend in holiday conviviality and more that the economy is in the toilet; most of the almost 1,000 $100 gift cards selected were for Ralphs supermarket.

Two men in their twenties died when a gunman drove up to the Metro Blue Line station at 275 Willowbrook Ave. after 6:30 p.m. last night and fired an automatic weapon into the crowd. Two other women and a man were also wounded.

California Attorney General Jerry Brown is all about crime fighting. The former Governor (and possible future Governor again) is in Los Angeles today after 30 plus search and arrest warrants were executed in South Los Angeles locations as part of an ongoing gang enforcement operation in the City of Compton. Why is the state getting involved in a local matter? "State agents crack down on local gang operations when the violence reaches a level that makes local containment difficult, if not impossible," a press release announcing this afternoon's press conference explains.

Three separate shooting incidents since Thursday have left four dead. The most recent took place yesterday around 1:30 p.m. when a man in a car drove up to a church and shot a man in a wheelchair and the man pushing him. The vehicle used was later found abandoned.

At least four people were critically injured after a twin-engine Cessna 310 airplane crashed in the 500 block of West Cypress in Compton this afternoon.

The first time I was in Compton, I didn't even know it until later when I was at a restaurant looking at the menu and noticed the address. It appeared the world's stereotype was wrong, maybe gone or I just happened to be in the "right" part of town. "Compton is beautiful, there are horse ranches there," a co-worker who grew up there told me at a previous job a few years before my...

Nearly 500 Teamsters tired of not being able to work for the weekend - because they have to work on some weekends - went on strike early this morning affecting Long Beach, Compton, and Sun Valley. About a quarter million people will be touched by the strike that is based around two major issues, long hours and respect. [Waste Management] said the [Teamsters] contract expired in September and that its latest offer included a...

The Los Angeles County Assessor announced that the property values in LA County rose above 9% in 2006 and totals a smidge over $1 trillion. Beating the trend is everyone's favorite, Compton, whose value rose 13.6%. However the largest increases were in Lancaster, Paramount and Palmdale . Lancaster surged by 21% due in part to a lot of new home sales, reports the LA Business Journal. Two inner-city communities also saw substantial gains: Paramount...

You can still root for LA's Golden Boy. After leading the Warriors to one of the greatest series upsets in the history of American sports (eighth seeded Golden State knocked off top ranked Dallas in six), Baron Davis went from star to hero. It looked like he might be headed for further greatness against Utah, but on Sunday things took a turn for the worse. He was held to 15 points as the Jazz...

This Christmas we went to Compton. And we took pictures. Enough for a photo essay! Way more after the jump......

We try every night to present a video under five minutes of interest, and tonight's is about gangbanging in our fair city. It doesn't really answer a lot of questions, but it might be a good way to get the conversation started. Because like one of the graphics says, this is a movie coming to your hood soon....
