So, there I was on a Thursday evening having just walked out of a movie at The Grove's Pacific Theater when the top of the buildings began throwing up a white, watery substance all over the ground, all over the shoppers, all over everywhere.

Most people have heard of Candy Cane Lane, a neighborhood in Woodland Hills that puts up elaborate holiday displays. There are a number of other neighborhoods around Los Angeles that can also deck the halls.

Sometimes too much holiday cheer is a very, very bad thing. Especially the liquid kind. Hence, the lateness of today's column. But here's the down and dirty on what's happening around town tonight:

Hey, even though there might not be much newly written TV on tonight (that's worth watching) tomorrow you are cordially invited to see acclaimed TV show creator and writer David Milch (creator of Deadwood, NYPD Blue) host: "The Idea of the Writer: A Writing Discussion with David Milch" tomorrow from 2:15-4:00pm at the WGA Theater at 135 S. Doheny Drive in Beverly Hills. This event is FREE and all are welcome on a first come,...

Why do all these songs about frostbite conditions sound so wonderful in sun-drenched shirtless reverb? Ever try pushing a sled through sand? I don't recommend it. But I heartily recommend each of the following experiences. Don't worry, we'll get to more Beach Boys later on, today (with the exception of track four) it's all about those chiming guitars. THE VENTURES - Sleigh Ride This comes from their fantastic Christmas album, one of the greats...

PJ Harvey made a pitstop last night at the Orpheum, playing one of only a handful of shows to promote her haunting new album, White Chalk (review here). I knew this was going to be a special night when a scalper actually paid me face value for my extra ticket. On entering, the sparse stage seems to echo the stripped-down nature of the new record. A keyboard, a cymbal, an autoharp on a chair, two...

There's nothing like an over-elaborate Christmas lawn display to get us in the spirit of the season. Unfortunately, it seems that this year there has been some neighborly discord regarding a particular display in Hancock Park. You see, a nice Jewish lady in this nice Jewish neighborhood appears to have more of a sense of humor than her neighbors and, among other things, has erected a large Santa in her yard that asks rhetorically,...

Santa Monica’s posh Montana Ave is celebrating its annual light-up night tonight from 5-9 pm. Walk, shop, drink, take in the sights (both hot mommas and Christmas lights) all the way from 7th to 17th street. Sure Montana can be a little chi-chi for Laist, but there is no better time to soak up the Westside glamour than during this Holiday Celebration.
