LAst Night's Action: Dodgers in Another Nail Biter

LA Dodgers defeat Chicago Cubs 2-1. Who knew Randy Wolf would give the Dodgers such great performances? Wolf took to the Friendly Confines going seven-plus innings giving up one run on six hits and a walk with seven strike outs. The only run he gave up was the first batter of the eighth inning Bobby Scales hitting a pinch hit homer to stir the Wrigley crowd. Ramon Troncoso didn't make things easy practically refusing to throw a strike. In both the eighth and ninth innings the tying runs were in scoring position, but Troncoso managed to get out of the jam both times. Juan Pierre went 2-for-4 with a stolen base which is good for me since I signed him as a free agent on my fantasy team.

LAst Night's Action: OMFG!

LA Clippers defeat Boston Celtics 93-91. OM-fucking-G indeed. Eric Gordon left the game with a shoulder injury and Baron Davis fouled out for the Clips, but they managed to stun the basketball world and defeat the reigning champs. The Clippers turned the ball over eight less time than the Celtics and they outscored the Celtics by a huge margin in the paint. Zach Randolph led all scorers with 30 points with four other Clips scoring in double figures.

Funda-MENTAL Differences

There was lots of speculation that the Dodgers would be merely a bump in the road for the Chicago Cubs, owners of the best record in the National League. A lot of people wrote off the Dodgers because of the weak NL West. So to some people the fact that the Dodgers are leading the NLDS two games to none might be a surprise. More of a surprise is just how different the mindset between the two teams are. Last night's 10-3 smacking, which wasn't even that close, just illustrates where the two teams are mentally.

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Chew on Wrigley

LA Dodgers defeat Chicago Cubs 10-3. Everyone say this with me: The Dodgers have a chance to go to the NLCS Saturday. The Cubs infield handed the game to the Dodgers with errors committed by each player on the horn which lead to five Dodger runs. Meanwhile Manny Ramirez struck for yet another postseason homerun and Chad Billingsley proved he could pitch under the glare of the spotlight going 6 2/3 innings giving up only one run on five hits and one walk with seven strikeouts. As for the Cubs their bats continued to be chilled apart from Derrek Lee and Mark DeRosa. Alfonso Soriano, Geovany Soto, Aramis Ramirez and Kosuke Fukudome were as quiet as the Chicago faithful at Wrigley. The potential clenching game will be at Dodger Stadium on Saturday.

Lonestar Runner

As I said the other day, nothing about the Dodgers makes any sense.

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Blast Cubbies

LA Dodgers defeat Chicago Cubs 7-2. Derek Lowe made only one mistake to Mark DeRosa in the second inning in his six innings of work, and the Dodgers used the long ball to give the them their second postseason victory since 1988. Things didn't look good for the Dodgers in the third inning when Andre Ethier struck out to end the inning with the bases loaded. But with the bases loaded in the fifth inning, James Loney recovered from swinging at two awful pitches and hit a belt-high change up out to the bleachers. This was the third grand slam in Dodgers history, the last two coming on consecutive days by Ron Cey and Dusty Baker in 1977. In the seventh inning Manny Ramirez dug a homer out of a ball that was no higher than a tee shot and blasted it deep in the bleachers while stumbling out of his shoes. Ramirez leads all hitters in baseball history with his 25th home run in the postseason. The Dodgers lead the best-of-five series 1-0.

Four and Twenty Blackbirds Baked in a Pie

The Los Angeles Dodgers are the 2008 National League West Division Champions.

With the Milwaukee Brewers winning the NL Wild Card today, the Dodgers will face the Chicago Cubs in the NL Divisional Series. Although the Dodgers are 2-5 against the Cubs this season, all of their contests were before the trading deadline. So the Cubs will be facing a completely different monster. First game in the series is on Wednesday, and the first game the Dodgers will be hosting is on Saturday. LET'S GO DODGERS!!!

LAst Night's Action: Pitiful Sunday

Boston Celtics defeat LA Lakers 108-102. The Lakers just stunk. They trailed by as much as 24 points in the fourth quarter but managed to get within four points in the final seconds of the game. But in the end they could not overcome their horrendous play. Although things looked good for the Lakers in the first quarter, Boston just came right back and were the aggressors. Yet again Boston kept Kobe out of the paint and their offense took the Lakers to the schoolyard in the paint.

LAst Night's Action: What Can Be Said?

Boston Celtics defeat LA Lakers 98-88. Well I called it didn't I? Two things hampered the Lakers: bad rebounding, and missing seven consecutive field goal attempts down the stretch in the fourth quarter. The Lakers were outrebounded 46-33 by the Celtics including giving up 10 offensive rebounds. The Lakers shot 41.6% while the Celtics shot 42.1%. So the Lakers know what lies ahead. And today should be a great day hearing what Vic the Brick Jacobs has to say after predicting a Laker's sweep.

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Offense Smells Like New Jersey

Chicago Cubs defeats LA Dodgers 2-1 (10 innings). I don't want to hear excuses about players being injured. Aside from Rafael Furcal, the only major injuries to the lineup has been to two unproductive players: Andruw Jones and Jeff Kent. And what more does Derek Lowe have to do to get a win? He only went seven innings pitching a four-hit shutout only to have Takashi Saito blow the save in the ninth inning. In the sweep by the Cubs the Dodgers scored exactly one run in each game. Even the Giants and Padres are more productive than this.

LAst Night's Action: Lakers on the Cusp of the Western Conference

LA Lakers defeat San Antonio Spurs 93-91. The Lakers started out strong posting a 22-8 lead in the first quarter. Though the Spurs would come back and tie the game many times, they just couldn't get over the hump. Manu Ginobli would be held to 2-8 shooting with seven points while Brent Barry had a career playoff high 23 points. Even with a career playoff day, Barry could not sell a foul by Derek Fisher beyond the arc at the end of the game to put the Spurs in the lead for the first time. Instead the Spurs are now down three games to one facing elimination at the Staples Center Thursday night.

Go Kings Go... Straight To The Cellar

With one week to go in the regular season, your Los Angeles Kings find themselves in last place in the NHL. With three games left, the Kings are two points behind the Tampa Bay Lightning, who have also played one less game. Kings, your pathetic fate is in your own gloved hands. Go out there and give it your all. Make us proud…

Your resident gay-bashing gay sports blogger here amped up for the start of the baseball postseason! And seeing how the regular season ended Monday night in the fabulous game that sent the Padres packing, this should be an exciting postseason.

Luck of the Dodgers: The Cubs are going to the Series

This is probably going to sound crazy, but that's because it is. I hold the keys to Cubs victory, and it all started with a Dodgers game. Here's what happened: I went to see the Dodgers a couple weeks ago when the Cubs were in town. I went to Friday, Saturday and Sunday games, May 25-27. The Cubs lost two of three, but managed to pull out a 4-2 win Saturday. Then they went...

Vin Scully on the Music of Memorial Day

If it seems like Vin Scully has been doing Dodger games forever, that's because this is his 50th season broadcasting LA Dodger games (1958-2007) and his 57th as a Dodger announcer. He's one of the few major broadcasters who works alone in the booth. No color man needed, no ex-jocks, no sidekick. The only problem with that is sometimes he can casually blow you away with precise diction and perfect tone, and sometimes the...

Real Drinking Games

Cinco De Mayo kicked off the summer drinking season and now we've got Memorial Day and the Fourth of July just around the corner. What better way to relieve the summer heat than with a nice cold brew? Suds are once again pouring in the Dodger Stadium bleachers. Weekend warriors are preparing their roadtrips to Bay to Breakers, where sobriety is as optional as the clothing. Yes sports fans, it's time to get your drink...

Dodgers Score Jason Schmidt for $47 Million

Orlando - When the Chicago Cubs decided (foolishly) to pay $40 million for southpaw Ted Lilly, they no longer could afford the much better Jason Schmidt who was scooped up today by the Dodgers.

Airplane Crashes into NY Building, Republicans Blame Clinton

Just minutes after a passenger airplane accidentally smashed into a hi-rise apartment killing journeyman pitcher Cory Lidle, the GOP machine pounced on the tragedy by blaming former President Bill Clinton for knowing that air travel could be dangerous and not doing enough to prevent situations like yesterday's crash. "He was President for eight years, he didn't lower the buildings, he didn't create bumpers on planes, he basically sat back and got oral sex and...

LA Times Publisher Fired for not cutting jobs

Tribune Corp. wanted some heads to roll in downtown LA, and they got their wish with Publisher Jeffrey M. Johnson, who was forced to resign today.

LAist is on the road. Yesterday we sat in the bleachers of Wrigley Field where it was 85 degrees and beautiful. For a 1:20pm game on a Monday with the home team 30 games below .500 it was a pretty great turnout. While getting beers we got to meet some of the ladies and gentlemen of Wrigley. Below the jump you'll get to see some of the guys who sit behind the wall in...

Dodgers Stumble and Miss Opportunity to Extend Lead

On Tuesday night the Dodgers entered Wrigley Field with a 1½ game lead over the San Diego Padres in the National League West Division. With 19 games left in the season, they are firmly in the drivers seat -- masters of their own destiny.

Jackie Robinson Weekend Blue for Dodgers

Well at least the weather was good. The Dodgers, as well as Major League Baseball celebrated Jackie Robinson Day Saturday April 15th. The Blue Crew looked to improve their record against arch rival San Francisco Giants but found themselves falling short and wondering what happened. It was an eventful and dare we say, entertaining series if not a successful one. The Dodgers dropped 2 of 3 to the Giants and fell below .500 (6-7) with a sad 2-4 record at home. Jackie Robinson Day itself was a success as the Odalis Perez pitched seven strong innings to get a 3-1 victory over Giants ace Jason Schmidt in front of over 53,000 in attendance. The other two games however found the Dodgers searching for their hitting stroke as well as for answers. They managed only 4 runs in 3 games as opposed to the offensive explosion against the Pirates in their previous series which featured a 13 run game on Thursday. Also noted in the games was the absent bat of one Barry Bonds. The San Francisco slugger failed to hit his first homerun of the season against LA and that is something that LAist can take solace in.
