Let's face it, 2007 was a mediocre year for movies. Although there are still a couple months left for 2007 to prove it's cinema value, overall it was a disappointing year. Sure Hollywood gave us "300", "Zodiac", and "Once", but we also got "The Number 23", "Norbit", and "Code Name: The Cleaner". So I have my eyes set on 2008, which seems to have a wonderful slate of features for us to see at...
It's after Memorial Day. It's sunny. And living in Los Angeles finally pays off.
Appearing at UCLA's Royce Hall tonight and tomorrow night only is Charlie Kaufman's amazing new theater experience, "The Theater of the New Ear". We highly suggest that you run, not walk, to your nearest UCLA box office, or some online venue and purchase tickets. Los Angeles is usually one of the last rungs on the theater ladder, getting touring shows months (sometimes years, sometimes never) after they have appeared on the east coast. Don't miss out, this is a true blue opportunity.
And now for something completely different. At midnight tonight, entirely beyond the pale freak-savant auteur Elan Gale will be screening the world premiere of his nineteen-minute short film "Fuck/Kill" at the Laemmle Sunset 5 (by the Virgin Megastore.) Admission is free. The opening short, "Lukewarm," by Bradley Reed, received a lukewarm reception at Cinespace a little while back, but "Fuck/Kill" promises to live up to its name as an unrated, hysterically funny, horribly evil hump & snuff thriller. Gale, only 22, is the next Charlie Kaufman in many ways; only much more affable in person. Disdaining film school, he's spent the past couple years passing around one script after another that name actors attach themselves to and no studio in its right mind will touch. We're expecting "Fuck/Kill" to be a maniacal example of everything unholy that can come only from the deepest, darkest underbelly of the film-making universe.
