Depeche Mode Cancels Chula Vista Gig Tonight; Will They Make it to LA?

Perennial rock idols Depeche Mode have been breaking hearts up and down the coast of California this week, after first canceling their Bay Area show Wednesday night, and now canceling tonight's show scheduled for the Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre outside San Diego in Chula Vista. This evening's much-anticipated gig had the plug pulled on it due to lead singer Dave Gahan's heath: "Doctors have ordered complete vocal rest for [him] for several days," explains San Diego's 10News.com.

Thanks, Economy. California Philharmonic Cancels Rest of Season

The Cal Phil is the next local cultural institution to be hit hard enough by the economy that they've canceled the rest of their season, even though they say the two previous shows were "nearly sold-out."

Due to the smoke and ash in the air generated by the two massive fires that have burning in Los Angeles and Orange Counties this weekend the Pasadena Marathon has been canceled. Yesterday the AQMD issued a smoke warning, and modified it to include Orange and Riverside county information once the Corona-Yorba Linda fire began to rage. The warning notes that, "surrounding areas of Los Angeles and Orange counties may reach the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups level or higher, depending on fire conditions and wind flows." Many people all over LA and OC are reporting smoky air and are opting to remain indoors. Participants in the Pasadena Marathon are asked to check online tomorrow for more information about the event.

In addition to the closures of several local freeways, there are other closures and stoppages of services due to the Sayre Fire that is burning in the Northeastern San Fernando Valley and in the Newhall Pass. Currently Metrolink is reporting that they have canceled all service on their Antelope Valley Line until further notice (Metrolink Twitter). Furthermore, California State University, Northridge (CSUN) has announced the cancellation of all Saturday classes on their campus, and that "individuals planning to attend scheduled events on campus should check directly with event sponsors."

The Black Crowes announced today that five concerts, including the ones at the Greek Theatre, The Bowl in Santa Barbara and at San Diego's Street Scene, have been canceled due to illness. "Despite our efforts, it is not possible to reschedule the canceled shows at this time. However, efforts are being made to reschedule these markets in early 2009. Fans are encouraged to obtain refunds from their original place of purchase," The Black Crowes wrote in an e-mail (posted in full here).
