Tweet of the Day: L.A. County's Foreign Relations to Outer Space

James Wagner, a journalist over at the San Gabriel Valley Tribune tweeted this gem of a local fact today: "LA County to appoint Buzz Aldrin as Honorary Consul General to the Moon. No joke. LA County/Moon relations will now be better than ever." Don't believe it? It's on tomorrow's agenda (.pdf)

Tinsel Downtown: LA's Core Starts to Show Some Star Power

Many people in Los Angeles consider a trip downtown as practical as visiting the moon, which may explain why it was never a big deal to Buzz Aldrin. "I used to come down to the Midnight Mission, I had a lot of friends working there," recalled the astronaut. Another charitable cause brought him back on Monday night, a fundraiser gala that generated over $300,000 for Virgin Unite and the Eve Branson Foundation. The charitable arm of Sir Richard Branson's empire supports social and environmental causes, including health care in rural parts of Africa.

TV Junkie: At the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards

We were in New York City last night to cover the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. Check out our brief notes earlier today on the success of the broadcast. Streets around Radio City Music Hall were shut down for the celebs to be dropped off and for several thousand fans to chant and shout from. Crammed in a veritable no-man's land between Seventeen Magazine and BET Online, it was all we could do to grab a few words with Anjulie, Buzz Aldrin, Sean Paul, All Time Low, and the Pussycat Dolls' Melody Thornton. We got some footage of Pink, Lady Gaga, Ne-Yo, Puff Daddy, Tracy Morgan, Jack Black, and others.

Last night Mods and Rockers screened Space Movie. Before the film, astronaut Buzz Aldrin gave a brief introduction to the evening, encouraging us to continue space exploration. Then director Tony Palmer did a Q&A with organizer Martin Lewis about the making of the film. Brit Palmer encouraged Americans to have more pride in their space heroes.

At the Movie Guide Awards last week, I had the chance to quiz Buzz Aldrin on a number of topics, including his statement that he saw a panel fly off of the spacecraft. I asked him if he gets tired of people asking him about the moon landing, or if he gets annoyed by people repeating Armstrong's famous phrase, "The Eagle has landed." I guess I assumed people shout that at him from cars, like "What you talkin 'bout, Willis?" He replied that no one ever asks him that, and told me this moving story about his childhood go-cart.
