City Increases Spending on Bottled Water: $184,000 Spent in '08

Back in 2004 and 2005, the city of Los Angeles spent a total of $88,000 total over the two year span on bottled water as it spent one million promoting that their tap water is safe and top quality. Fast forward to 2008 and records show that the city spent $184,000 in just one year--that's an $140,000 increase, or four times more, after public outcry and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa telling departments to cut it out.

One of my favorite food writers, Jeffrey Steingarten, once did an elaborate and methodical taste test of several different varieties of tap and bottled water. After much research and even more adjectives, he came to the shocking conclusion that New York tap water was most pleasing to the palate.

  • As we have pointed out before, it's not a good time to be a Republican. The state GOP is meeting in San Francisco (of all places) to talk about ways to help the party in which a deep rift has developed between those on the right and those to the right of them.
  • In a headline nearly as long as the entire article, the Daily News tells us: Yes, you're paying more for gas. Average is now $3.10. We need to invest in alternative fuels. We need to elect a Democrat who will explore alternative fuels. We need to elect a Repuiblican who will drill in Alaska. We need to drive more hybrids. Fuck it, I'm off to catch the bus.

Chicagoist is gearing up for this weekend's annual Air & Water Show along the lakefront. In what's becoming an annual tradition around there, staff member Todd McClamroch even got to fly with one of the participants. Chicagoist's decidedly opinionated readership was also appalled that one of their staffers found a popular local brewpub to be a great place to bring a kid. They also think that an unlikely activist for immigration rights should just take her medicine and offered their own suggestions to how the city should capitalize on the local music scene. And everyone thinks that a suggested tax on bottled water is a great idea.

Unless you are stocking up on earthquake supplies or stuck at the O.C. County Fair, stop wasting your money on bottled water -- it's as good as a Los Angeles tap:A group called Corporate Accountability International has been pressuring bottled water sellers to curb what it calls misleading marketing practices. Aquafina is the single biggest bottled water brand, and its bottles are now labeled "P.W.S." The new labels will spell out "public water source."...

Hey, we know that our constant nagging at you to get yourself some water to store away for that ominous future disaster that everyone thinks is going to happen can get exasperating -- we call it Chinese water torture. And we really shouldn't say 'think' either. Let's say, "we know it's going to happen." It's true; people are still out there living their lives day to day without any thought to preparing for a...

We're as stunned as Laura Chick at the news that the LA DWP -- the tidy acronym for "Department of Water and Power" -- was buying bottled water for its offices, even as it spent a half-million dollars to promote how safe and delicious its tap water is to drink. We love it when the LA Times does local news like this.

On a recent Wednesday night, we sat with thirty or so people in a dark room on Wilshire and watched a film called "fronterz" Directed by Courtney Jones, starring Reno Wilson, Garth Belcon and Dennis Pressy and featuring Henry Winkler and Ted Danson. That we were watching a movie was not unusual. It happens often. The unusual part, the astounding and amazing part was that we were watching this particular movie at all.
