Burbank residents who live in the vicinity of Bob Hope Airport may soon see relief in the nighttime hours from cargo plane flight activity if a proposed mandatory curfew is endorsed by the public and approved by the FAA.

  • Five are dead and one person was hurt in an apparent murder-suicide in Yorba Linda, close to the Richard Nixon Library. A 14-year-old called in to report that his father had shot him. Police later found that the gunman shot his wife and 3 of his children before turning the gun on himself.
  • As we have pointed out before, it's not a good time to be a Republican. The state GOP is meeting in San Francisco (of all places) to talk about ways to help the party in which a deep rift has developed between those on the right and those to the right of them.
  • In a headline nearly as long as the entire article, the Daily News tells us: Yes, you're paying more for gas. Average is now $3.10. We need to invest in alternative fuels. We need to elect a Democrat who will explore alternative fuels. We need to elect a Repuiblican who will drill in Alaska. We need to drive more hybrids. Fuck it, I'm off to catch the bus.
  • Is Councilman Herb Wesson gearing up for a mayoral run? Hmmmmm. At least one blog might support some opposition.
  • LAX could receive greater scrutiny if a study is approved Monday that would look into diesel emissions and how noise from arriving and departing planes affects surrounding homes. It's something that Bob Hope Airport in Burbank continues to grapple with.
  • The nod for best movie may go to "No Country For Old Men," but the award for best tasting tap water has gone to Los Angeles. A panel of 10 journalists and food critics sampled sparkling, tap and bottled water from 19 states and other countries, including New Zealand, Romania, Macedonia and the Philippines before calling it for Los Angeles.

Bargain airliner Skybus is adding a route into Burbank's Bob Hope Airport starting Monday. The airline has two US hubs, and has been operating flights to and from the one in Columbus, Ohio for some time now, and is now linking BUR with its other hub in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Earlier this week I made a right turn out of a parking lot in order to avoid waiting a lifetime to make a near-impossible left turn. I found myself on a quiet side street in lovely Toluca Lake, and eyeballed my trusty GPS navigation screen in order to see if the road I'd taken would connect me through to a street I knew would hook me up with Riverside Drive and send me on my way home.

Hearing that Burbank's Bob Hope Airport might be grounding flights this morning, I headed over there at 5:30am. They were still allowing in the usual traffic, in spite of the fact that everyone was swerving all over the road in the dense fog. I almost got T-boned by a Flyaway shuttle. I spoke to a few passengers who were heading back to the parking structure after being told their flight to San Francisco was cancelled.

Yup, it's what you were thinking -- razors. The baron of a clean shave himself, King Camp Gillette, bought this land off of the now Mulholland Hwy in 1926 after making a fortune in the early 1900s off of the safety razor. Today, his home and ranch are open to the public for the first time. Near the entrance of Malibu Creek State Park, the 588-acre park was collaboratively purchased for $35 million by...

After the Guinness buzz wears off, after the shamrock foam fades away, after all your St. Patty’s festivities have come to an end, you will have a chance to save a life.

We Love BUR! Jet Blue is seen as a major force behind 2006 being the best year for Bob Hope Airport in Burbank. "With 5.7 million passengers, the Burbank airfield had an increase of 3.2 percent in passengers from last year." (SFVBJ) Business as Usual in LA While the Aqua Teen Hunger Force guerilla marketing campaign in Boston caused mass panic over terrorism and bombs, the same campaign in LA and other cities hardly...

Before everyone gets their panties in a bunch, let's make one thing perfectly clear, LAist LOVES Hollywood. We love the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce's bizarre choices for stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. We love the seediness of Hollywood Blvd. Hell we even love the the monstrosity that is the world's most fucked up strip mall known as Hollywood & Highland. We love these things because they represent the half-shitty, half-shiny semi-glamorous paradox...

Throughout this series, we will be asking fellow bloggers about their thoughts on Moorpark Street. LACityNerd summarizes a good list for us to start off with:

Can't afford that $2.2 million house you wanted in Laguna Niguel? You can get the same exact model for a half million in AV (that's Antelope Valley). Hello Poppy Festival and street names with no creativity!

So Jon Stewart will host the Oscars this year. Hosting the Oscars solo is a little like climbing Everest: the idea of doing it is always there, taunting America's elite comedians and raconteurs. Some, like Bob Hope, can beat it — 12 times he hosted alone, and more times with helpers tagging along. Others end up like Beck Weathers and David Letterman, beaten and barely alive, knowing they'll never do it again. But the challenge to climb it remains, irresistable, until the opportunity is seized. Many who've tried have passed into that good night. Stewart, we love ya: please bring a sherpa.

Around four o'clock this afternoon, a Southwest Airlines flight getting ready for takeoff at Burbank's Bob Hope Airport stopped on the runway. A passenger -- who may have been in his early 20s, and may have been drunk, may have been with a group of other drunk people -- said something that alarmed the flight attendants and made the pilot stop the plane without even returning to the gate. All passengers were evacuated safely. The troublemaker hasn't yet been identified in the media, because nobody's exactly sure what he did.

No two words can better describe a decadent weekend for the Angeleno than Las Vegas. This LAist poster joined the masses at the Bob Hope (a/k/a Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena) Airport on Friday afternoon for a Southwest Airlines 3 PM cattle call to the city of Lost Wages. And we didn’t mind a bit. OK, maybe a little -- but we still love us the Bob Hope…

Today Jet Blue Flight 292 departed at 3:17pm from Bob Hope Airport. While in flight, the Airbus A320 (with 145 passengers) experienced a nose gear malfunction.

Air traffic controllers subsequently instructed the crew the to dump fuel over the ocean. Apparently pilots were unable to do so. Instead they're flying low and burning off fuel before attempting an emergency landing (either at LAX or Long Beach Airport).

Update:
At 6:20pm Pacific time, the airplane landed safely.

When the Veterans Administration asked for public comment on what to do with the prime piece of West Los Angeles real estate that is Veterans Park, it stirred up plenty of passions, but most of the debates argued selling off bits of the land to pay for improvements to the rest versus keeping the place as quiet as usual.

Of course, how this all came about is worth examining. Since the Burbank Airport always seems to have its toes treading in the community hot water with concerns over expansion and noise, JetBlue was only able to get in the gates thanks to Aloha Airlines' bankruptcy filing, and their April move-out of Terminal A, which leaves room for the the new Blue kid and their NY-bound fights. Also, since JetBlue seems to dislike LAX as much as we do--they don't fly out of there, after all--this won't undercut their own business from the Southland to NYC and other destinations. JetBlue's three non-stop daily BUR to JFK flights begin in May, with a fourth departure time slated for July.
