Disney wants you to spend your birthday money at their parks next year so they're letting you in for free in 2009. You've just got to prove your birthday with a valid ID. And for those who are annual pass holders, then you get a FastPass which lets you cruise to near the beginning of the line. Maybe street artist Banksy will visit again after installing his Guantanamo Bay piece (video) a couple years ago.......

Taken in Encino | Photo by fotonomous via LAist Featured Photos on Flickr On Monday, we observed Los Angeles' birthday (really, it was Labor Day), but today is the actual birthday of Los Angeles. In an LA Times' editorial today, they ask an important one: "where do L.A. natives go to reconnect with the city's history?" Not Chinatown they say, the original one is where Union Station stands today. And both Chinatown and Olvera......

Los Angeles' 227th birthday is actually on September 4, but early this morning was the annual Pobladores "Walk to Los Angeles" nine-mile Re-enactment. Unfortunately, the City of Los Angeles had no mention of it on their website homepage and while their birthday page navigation links to the correct PDF info flyer and walker brochure, it still has the 2007 information on the website (date, volunteer registration, and route flyer [.pdf]). In any case, happy Labor......

Yesterday, Little Radio's Summer Camp series Downtown continued with performances from local bands The Parson Redheads (MySpace), The Henry Clay People (MySpace), and Film School (MySpace). This was a rather memorable appearance for The Henry Clay People for several reasons: It was their first show at Little Radio. It was guitarist Andy Ciara's birthday. Frontman Joey Ciara vowed to put more people onstage than The Parson Redheads -- whose bandmember count can approach The......

Photo by GarySe7en via the LAist Featured Photos pool on Flickr On Friday, June 20th, the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific will reach its one-decade milestone. In honor of the occasion, they have launched a year-long celebration at the marine life-themed attraction with various events, contests, exhibits, and features centered around the number 10. The ten-sanity is abundant: You can find out their picks for their top 10 favorite animals, catch their 10th......

If Wagner was still alive today, he would have just celebrated his 195th (!) birthday yesterday. His influence was felt by many including Baudelaire, Freud, Joyce, Nietzsche, and any/every important contemporary of his. Some recent adaptations in mainstream media that come to mind include a terrible Tristan + Isolde movie and Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy (based off of Wagner's Ring cycle). For me most memorable tribute to Wagner comes from a not-too-recent......

"Happy Birthday L. Ron Hubbard" | All Photos by Zach Behrens/LAist-->Today was the second worldwide Anonymous protest organized via March15.org, the Anonymous website dedicated to the founder's birthday, two days prior. A few hundred protestors hit Hollywood Blvd. at L. Ron Hubbard Way in the East Hollywood area. The Scientologist center had a film permit and they were doing some kind of filming. Also their TV billboard was playing inspirational-like videos with Disney-esque music,......

This is hilarious... and weird. Back in 1998, my family took my grandmother out for her 89th birthday to a restaurant that fused French and Asian. The quaint little restaurant in Chicago's suburban North Shore village of Wilmette was appropriately named Chinsoiserie. The seven of us were seated and we immediately ordered fifty dollars worth of delicious appetizers. When it came time to order our meals, half of what we desired sent the waitress......

Dear Mr. President, Since its your big 61st birthday today, and it seems as though things don't seem to be going so well for you, we thought we'd post a video from the good old days. Back when you were drinking and partying, back before people had to salute you, and before you had to think so hard about stuff. For the remainder of your term, we suggest you should start drinking again- you're......

Tom Waits, the adorably gruff-voiced hat-wearing homeless-looking storyteller of such classic albums as "Rain Dogs", "Frank's Wild Years" and "Bone Machine" has the most popular CD collection at Hollywood's Amoeba last week (November 28 thru December 5). The accomplishment is quite a feat since "Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards" is a triple CD box set of B-sides and rarities, with an Amoeba price of $42.98. Waits was also #1 at the SF Amoeba location......

Gram Parsons left us for a better place 23 years ago. If he were still alive, he would be coming up on celebrating his 59th birthday. Gram is often referred to as the worlds first Country/Rock Star. He has maintained an incredible cult following through the years - how could he not being one of the first to discover Emmylou Harris, he played shortly with the Birds and had the ultimate rock-star notch in......

Today is Charles Bukowski's birthday. Los Angeles' greatest poet lived to 119 years old. He carried an axe and led his blue ox around with a choke-chain that he'd release whenever someone stepped to him. He worked for the LA post office for decades and drank and worked and wrote at night and drank some more and sometimes got sleep before he went to work. Even though his fine book "Post Office" told the......

First off she looks damn good for 68. Say what you will about her politics, I know people half her age that don't look as good as our congresswoman from the 35th in South Central. Like Nelly, Maxine was born in St. Louis but eventually made her way to LA in time to graduate from Cal State LA even before it was called Cal State LA. Back then it was Los Angeles State College,......
