I’m not ashamed to admit that somewhere among my Jon Brion, Of Montreal and Vampire Weekend albums, you’ll find a bunch of Billy Joel CDs. Although I wasn’t even born when he first hit the airwaves, I’ve always had a soft spot for his music. Since I didn’t get to see him perform during the days when he was releasing and performing new music, I was excited for the opportunity to see him Saturday night in Anaheim.

Right about the time we posted the YouTube clip "Here Comes Another Bubble" last week, it vanished from the Web. And so began one of the more intense Web 2.0 dramas of the year. Tonight, The Richter Scales returned with "Here Comes Another Bubble" Version 1.1 and, while it is supposedly infringement-free, it hasn't necessarily been blessed by all.

Everybody's doing it, right? I don't pretend to be hip or edgy or rebellious. I mean, I grew up on Billy Joel and Madonna and Motown and then the Gen Xer's basic dichotomy of KROQ versus Top 40 in the 90s. I find it increasingly harder to fall in love with albums in the downloading age, and am one of those people who obsessively compiles mixed cds for friends and iPod playlists full of individual tracks from a broad sampling of artists. The three places I'm most thankful for getting me turned on to new music would be my fellow LAisters, the awesome site 3hive, and good ol' KCRW. It all started with talk of Posh & Becks moving to Los Angeles. Then it was about Posh and the Spice Girls and their horrible videos. The conversation turned to boy bands of the same era (give or take) and their horrendous videos that often seemed sexually, well, questionable. LAist has now officially laughed ourselves silly watching these old videos and have to share them with you. They have a certain, "this can't possibly be for real" quality to them. So each day this week at lunch we are sharing a boy band classic video with you.

Every morning at 6am we have been posting a video of someone singing or playing the "Star Spangled Banner". Depending on how many people stuck around to halftime to hear Prince, this was probably the most-heard song in the entire world yesterday. We've got to say, Billy Joel was a safe choice, but a good one. We would have preferred someone from Indiana or Chicago, like, say, John Cougar Mellencamp or Billy Corgan or...

Howard Stern returns from his two-week summer vacation tomorrow, and before he left there was a running bit where they'd discover classic tunes that secretly had the n-word in it. Two AC/DC songs and a Billy Joel track had what appeared to be the derogatory term in the lyrics.

Do you realize that The Replacements' "Let It Be" is 22 years old? Indeed, if "Unsatisfied" was a chick, she could buy you a drink at the swinging party.
