Horror classics continue to suffer the indignity of needless remakes with The Last House on the Left being another victim. It's as if someone thought that the original would benefit from polishing when, in fact, it was its very roughness that made it so damn good. James Toback's fascination with Mike Tyson continues with the eponymous (and excellent) documentary Tyson. I still think that Toback is seeing things that aren't entirely there, though, with respect to Iron Mike. I can still remember seeing The Last Starfighter as a kid visiting my aunt in sleepy Lake Charles, Louisiana. The CGI animation looks fairly awful now, but I loved, loved, loved that movie way back when. And my childhood crush on Catherine Mary Stewart has barely faded with time.

       

More than perhaps any weekend in recent memory, Americans are going to spend their money on the wrong movies starting today. The Hurt Locker is a vibrant, thrilling film about a bomb squad unit in Iraq. It ratchets tension so tightly you'll feel like you can barely breathe and features a star-making performance by Jeremy Renner. And yet it will likely be ignored by audiences. Similarly -- especially now given recent events in Iran -- The Stoning of Soraya M. is a film that everyone should see. Based on the actual murder of an Iranian woman falsely accused of adultery, it's a potent reminder of how little freedom still exists in the Islamic Republic.

The summer blockbluster season is starting awfully early this year as Watchmen hits theaters. By most accounts, it's a faithful adaptation of Alan Moore's seminal graphic novel. The question is, "Does it have an audience beyond the faithful?" I, for one, am excited to see it. The Fanning family has officially replaced the infamous Culkens as little Elle Fanning stars in Phoebe in Wonderland. Am I alone in thinking pushing your kid into Hollywood constitutes child abuse? Everlasting Moments is the exact opposite of Watchmen: a Swedish film taking place at the turn of the century. Talk about counter-programming! Shuttle is just the kind of low-budget indie thriller that deserves a larger audience than it will ultimately get. Give it a shot.

was the last David Lynch movie that I really dug. Bill Pullman--in all of his confused Everyman glory--was a perfect fit for Lynch's surreal and scuzzy universe.
