Around 100 people's car tires were slashed over the night, leaving San Pedro residents with an unhappy morning surprise. It wasn't until people gathered at a local tire store that they all began to figure out what happened. Police are not sure exactly how many people were victimized, but one person is quoted in a Daily Breeze report saying they were "inundated" with calls.

It's just the new reality. Regular gas ia averaging at $4 a gallon in Northern and Central California. In the Los Angeles area, it's $3.902, "which is another record and 50 cents higher than a year ago," Mark Lacter noted at LA Business Observed.

Definitely one of the hottest energy-efficient green cars around, the fully electric Tesla Roadster can travel over 200 miles on a single battery charge and can go from 0 to 60 mph in a short 3.9 seconds. Lucky for Los Angeles, it gets Tesla Motor's first location for a dealership.

This is last Friday as reported by LAist Featured Photos contributor Jonathan Alcom: "A gallon of regular gasoline priced at 3.99 at a Unocal gas station on Pico Bl and Barrington in West Los Angeles on Friday March 7, 2008 as surging oil prices jumped to a new record above $106 Friday. This gas station was about 40 cents higher than other gas stations in the area."

According to a new study by David Strayer, a psychology professor at the University of Utah, talking on a cell phone while driving can make a person drive up to 2mph slower that other drivers, the LA Daily News reports.

Remember that car chase scene in "The Da Vinci Code?" Yeah, that car chase is coming to an LA near you. Last Thursday, the weekly LA Green Drinks was hosted at The Smart Car House in Venice. We get an introduction to the Smart Car and learn that the first Smart Car dealerships in Los Angeles will be in North Hollywood, Beverly Hills, West Covina, Riverside and Laguna Niguel. The smart house at 1319...

For the past two weeks Councilmember Tom LaBonge has been proudly welcoming visitors to the 12th Annual LADWP Holiday Light Festival at Griffith Park, announcing with a straight face that this year's Festival demonstrates the DWP's commitment to a "Greener LA." Tom deserves credit for maintaining a straight face as he makes this outrageous claim because this Festival is far from Green! Granted, there is a lighting display at the entry that clearly states "DWP...

It's cars! It's girls! It's flashing lights! It's...the LA Auto Show! Feel the excitement! The Infinity girls sure are feeling the excitement! This year's show is two weeks earlier than last year's and longer than it's ever been - 12 days (two press days and 10 days open to the public). Unfortunately, the lengthy show seems to have taken it's toll on most of the booth staffs, most of the guys and girls given...

Memorial Reading for Mutanabbi Street with Chris Abani, Beau Beausoleil, Laila Lalami, Suzanne Lummis, Majid Naficy, Marisela Norte, Sholeh Wolpe & Terry Wolverton 7pm @ Centraly Library

When I bought my first car, I first went to the Toyota in Valencia. I walked out soon after when they tried to sell me a car by comparing it to finding a woman and then highlighting how cool spoilers were. What a bunch of fucking morons. Apparently, the troglodyte breed at Toyota goes up the corporate ladder. Siel Ju, aka GreenLAGirl, at the LA Times sticks it to Toyota after visiting the LA...

I have just spent the last two weeks researching and cataloging every single Thai restaurant in Thai Town. I have driven up and down Hollywood Boulevard more times than a horny john. I have eaten every kind of Thai food. I have eaten boar, crunchy frog, durian, horrible purple salted crab and some things I cannot even pronounce. So this morning I finished my last graveyard shift for the weekend, and with some relief, I realized I didn't have to go back to Thai Town for the the rest of the week. I am going to take a Thai hiatus and let the other posters rock the curries. I pulled into the 24-hour drug store on the way home for some trashy magazines and ice cream to enjoy on my little Thai-free vacation. I was so tired, I realized only at the very moment that I slammed the door that the keys were in the ignition. I never do that. Fuck.

"Constance" by Mr. J. Medeiros of Echo Park

LAist reader Drew wrote in with some news in his part of town, and he was nice enough to attach some photos. Wow, thanks, Drew! Hey Tony! Apparently an elderly driver was leaving the UPS store in the little shopping corner on Riverside and Laurel Canyon (where Starbucks and Subway are), backed into THREE cars and then tried to flee the scene only to hit another car pulling into the parking lot and ended...

Daytime joyriding has almost become an oxymoron, but in Hanson's photos even the 405 at 5pm is blissfully free of traffic.

I like to consider myself a green person. I mean every time I leave the house I ask myself if my destination can be reached without a car, which is why I find myself riding a bicycle/subway/bus often. However I always come across others who are gung-ho about nascent eco-trends (drives a Prius, shops only at Whole Foods), who are so caught up in Green Commercialism that they never stop to evaluate its benefit for themselves. You're not positively contributing to the environment just because you drink Fiji water! Oh, and as a side note, the transport of one bottle of Fiji water to your local grocery store burns 1 kilo of fossil fuel, 27 kilos of water, and generates 1.2 pounds of greenhouse gases.

As Guest Day Editor, Siel, a.k.a Green LA Girl, will be joining LAist with a few posts throughout today. Read her interview here and check out her site. Drinking and driving isn't cool -- Which is why I made the logical decision to ditch the car a few months ago. Now, not only can I drink all I want most nights, I also have a few hundred extra bucks for my drink budget each month....

Citing high costs, length of time to build and other basic realities of building the "subway to the sea," Michael Balter calls for Wilshire Blvd. to be car free today in the LA Times opinion section: First, ban all automobiles from the entire 15-mile length of the boulevard. Second, beginning at its Western Avenue station, bring the Metro Rail to street level and run it to and from the sea on two sets of...

Accidents that happen on I-5 may be the absolute worst thing in the world.

I knew he'd caught me. It was the first time in a long while that the 405 had been wide open and I was taking full advantage of that delicious opportunity. A few minutes into driving way too fast, I spotted the black and white in my rear view and knew my happiness would be short lived. But then...he moved into another lane! As he drove past me, I noticed the words "Movie Car"...

In the wilds of Santa Monica, just south of Montana on a little street named Lincoln, lives this wonderful and mysterious creature. Some say its tears cure the sick, but I think those people have it confused with the Unicorn that lives on Pico. This is just a car that looks like a giant chicken. And thank God for that. More finger lickin' goodness after the jump......

With a weekend 3-game sweep of the elderly San Francisco Giants under their collective belt, the Dodgers (4-2) open their regular season home schedule at Dodger Stadium this afternoon against the Colorado Rockies (3-3). Prized off-season acquisition Jason Schmidt (1-0) is scheduled to start, and his first pitch is scheduled for 1:10pm. For those taking an extra long lunch today (and you know who you are, as this one's already sold out), here's what to know in advance of today's home opener:

Occasional car nuts that we are, LAist couldn't be more stoked about the big event this weekend. Mid-Wilshire will be crawling with genuine hot rods all this weekend as part of the 75th anniversary of the '32 Ford, affectionately known as The Deuce. The Petersen Automobile Museum will be the focal point for all things Deuce-ish all this weekend, as 750 of the Fords are expected to turn out for what is certainly to be the largest such gathering in recent memory. Fords have been rolling in all week and many of them will be taking up residence on the second floor of the museum for an exhibit lasting through March 20th.

When Mr. Williams took his new Corvette into a Nor Cal dealership for a simple antenna repair, he had the foresight to imagine an employee taking his whip on a speedy joyride. For that reason, he instructed the dealer not to drive his Vette off the lot. Well one employee did anyway. And not only that, he spun it out on a turn at high speed while doped up on Codeine, causing over $15,000 in damage.

    2007 Chevy Malibu shown above...no seriously, that's a Malibu

OK, that's not what happened, but we think this is funny. Even funnier because the editor of LAist writes his personal blog at busblog.com, and is obsessed with public transportation. This was taken today on Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena, as we were driving to get lunch. Said one 80 year old witness, "I've never seen anything like that in my life." Neither had we. Notice that while the bus was getting wenched onto the...
