I missed the boat on getting as many CDs reviewed as I wanted to in 2008 (a subtle hint at a 2009 resolution of mine) so here are some stellar albums that deserve more than the short mention they are receiving below:

Right around Labor Day we interviewed KCRW dj Jason Bentley about the 30th anniversary of Morning Becomes Eclectic. Today he provides us with his top ten albums of 2007, and you Radiohead fans will be glad to see that he adds them to his list just like most of his cohorts did. Interestingly when Mathieu Schreyner left Radiohead off his list, not only was he not criticized, but he received many more positive comments...
LAist had a chance to see the Chemical Brothers at the debut of their US tour at the sold-out Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC last night. It's their first headlining appearance in the US in over 5 years and they brought it, full on. They will be headlining the Nocturnal Festival a week from today and there's plenty of other folks to see there as well, but really, the Brothers alone justify attendance. Here's a photo...
Artist: Small Sins Album: Mood Swings Label: Astralwerks Release Date: 09/25/2007 The Small Sins is a group led by former Carnations member, Thomas D'Arcy. Small Sins is his baby and you can tell as every song is almost, but not quite, overwhelmed by his presence. This album starts very solidly, with several outstanding tracks: the anthematic "I Need A Friend", the wonderfully banjo-infused "Morning Face", and potentially my favorite, the Magical Mystery Tour-esque "What Your...
Artist: prinzhorn dance school Album: prinzhorn dance school Label: Astralwerks/DFA Release Date: 08/28/2007 Dear DFA, why wasn't there a label like you around in 1990 when me and my friends had about 15 pretentious and arty bands exactly like prinzhorn dance school? If anything, I love this prinzhorn dance school album because it perfectly preserves the memories of skinny black-clad, cheap red wine swilling art scoundrels the world over. Minimalist and repetitive, most of...
Artist: Digitalism Album: Idealism Release Date: June 2007 Label: Astralwerks Digitalism is a duo, composed of a couple German guys, Jens Moelle and Ismail Tuefekci - they played at Coachella this year and will be back in LA to do a DJ set at the end of October. Even though I've got the video of 'Pogo' linked above, I don't think that track is representational of the album. 'Pogo' is much more rock oriented...

New Music Tuesday has matzofied, seder’d out and re-opened for business on this fine Thursday eve. Please use caution while perusing the list -- these brand-spankin’, ultra-smokin’, bootie-shakin’, earth-movin’, mind-blowin’ new releases might just melt your face off. Especially the Hip Hop Tribute To Bon Jovi. Phenomenal. Well, theoretically phenomenal. You understand. Billboard has a lot of charts. And usually we just give you the No.1s. However, the line up for this week was rather uninspiring, and it seemed in everyone's best interest to instead list the top ten winners from just a few featured charts. So here they are. Issue Date : March 31, 2007 Top Independent Albums 1. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible (Merge) 2. Type O Negative - Dead Again (Steamhammer) 3. The...

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here together in the sight of Rock and in the face of Roll, to join together you, dear LAist reader, and this New Music Tuesday in holy Matrimony. The Mere Mortals, who LAist has written about before, continues to climb up the charts despite being unsigned. Their self-made "Rebel Radio" EP continues to rise on the FMQB album chart , one that tracks national airplay on new music radio shows. Currently the Mere Mortals are #3, just behind And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead 's "So Divided" (Interscope), and The Kooks' "Inside In/Inside Out (Astralwerks). They're outpacing such...
The DFA The DFA Remixes: Chapter Two Astralwerks The producing duo of Tim Goldsworthy and James Murphy that make up the DFA have released another collection of redone and undone tracks with "The DFA Remixes: Chapter Two" (Astralwerks). Clocking in at almost seventy-two minutes, the album journeys through a disparate but not dischordant pack of unlikely artists. Opening with Montreal-based DJ Tiga Sontag's "Far From Home", the DFA have more than picked up the pace...
