New York-based As Tall as Lions opened for Mutemath last night at Club Nokia at LA Live. After chatting with lead singer and guitarist Dan Nigro last week, it was a treat to see the band dive headlong with gusto into their 45-minute set which showcased the best of their latest full-length release, You Can't Take it With You, and one indulgence into the back catalog (the wonderfully haunting "Ghost of York" from their 2006 self-titled release).

Tonight In Rock: Blink 182, As Tall As Lions, Patrick Watson, Learning Music

Tonight legendary Poway-bred pop punk outfit Blink 182 will be headlining the Hollywood Palladium with none other than celebrated Orange County-based ska act the Aquabats. NY-based alternative rock outfit As Tall As Lions (LAist Interview, Review) are poised to take on Club Nokia, kicking things off for New Orleans' own Grammy Award-nominated rockers Mute Math (LAist Review, #2). And, lastly, local prolific songwriter John Wood, who performs under the pseudonym Learning Music, will be gracing Echo Curio. But we strongly suggest heading over to Largo at the Coronet to catch Québécois singer-songwriter Patrick Watson.

LAist Interview: Dan Nigro from As Tall as Lions

In 2001, Dan Nigro joined up with some friends from high school and did what surely plenty of young people do in Long Island, New York: They formed a band. It would be glib to say "And the rest is history!" since As Tall as Lions is one hell of a hard-working quartet; they've just kicked off a tour in support of their August full-length release, You Can't Take it With You (Triple Crown Records), serving as support for Mutemath, and you can see them at Club Nokia this Saturday. This tour follows their summer tour with Dredg and Rx Bandits, and by late November through the end of the year they'll be touring in the US with Minus the Bear and in the UK with Frightened Rabbit and Athlete.

Tonight In Rock: The Mars Volta, The Faint, As Tall As Lions, Kissing Cousins

Tonight Grammy Award-winning El Paso-bred progressive rockers the Mars Volta (LAist Review) will be headlining the Hollywood Palladium. Omaha-based electronic act the Faint are poised to take on Club Nokia with none other than local dance-infused rockers Moving Units (LAist Review). And, lastly, Silver Lake's own all-female quintet Kissing Cousins will be ringing in their debut disc Pillar of Salt, which was produced by Californian-bred multi-instrumentalist Richard Swift, at everyone's favorite local record shop Origami Vinyl. But we strongly suggest heading over to the El Rey Theatre to catch LAist favorites, NY-based alternative rock outfit As Tall As Lions (LAist Review). Seal Beach-based quartet RX Bandits (LAist Review) and Los Gatos-bred prog rockers Dredg are slated to perform as well.

Tonight In Rock: Andrew Bird, Murder City Devils, Mystery Jets, As Tall As Lions

Tonight Seattle-based garage rockers Murder City Devils will be concluding a two-night stint at the Henry Fonda Music Box with local duo Tweak Bird. English indie rock outfit Mystery Jets are poised to play Spaceland for this week's edition of Club NME. And, as mentioned previously, Long Island-based pop rockers As Tall As Lions will be headlining the Troubadour for free if you're legal. But we strongly suggest doing whatever it takes to get into the Orpheum Theatre in Downtown to catch Chicago's crown jewel, Mr. Andrew Bird. The classically trained violinist will not only mystify you with an unparalleled proficiency, but also a very singular, songbird-esque trill. Sweden's own multi-instrumentalist Loney Dear (LAist Interview) is slated to kick the show off.
