Tonight In Rock: Janelle Monae, Saint Motel, Nico Stai, Birds & Batteries

Tonight local indie rock outfit Saint Motel's (LAist Interview) will be performing at the Roxy with none other than Rumspringa (LAist Review, #2) and Army Navy (LAist Interview, #2, Review). LA-based indie rock troubadour Nico Stai is poised to grace Spaceland. And, lastly, San Franciscan alt-rockers Birds & Batteries will be taking on the American Legion Post 206. But we strongly suggest heading over to Siren Studio to catch Kansas City-bred Grammy Award-nominated pop singer-songwriter Janelle Monae. LAist favorites, afro-centric indie pop act Fool's Gold are slated to kick things off.

Tonight In Rock: CocoRosie, Saint Motel, The Icarus Line, Leslie And The Badgers

Tonight local indie rock outfit Saint Motel (LAist Interview) will be continuing their month-long residency at Spaceland with LAist favorites Army Navy (LAist Interview, #2, Review) in tow. The unnecessarily abrasive Buddyhead-backed rock act known as the Icarus Line are poised to take on the Silver Lake Lounge. And, lastly, alt-country troubadour Leslie and the Badgers will be performing at the Echo. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Henry Fonda Music Box to catch French "freak folk" outfit CocoRosie.

Tonight In Rock: Green Day, The Dead Weather, Mellowdrone, Army Navy

Tonight Scottish rockers Franz Ferdinand are poised to perform with Green Day at the Forum. Nashville-based alternative rock super-group the Dead Weather are poised to take LA by storm, playing at the Wiltern with none other than Tyvek. And, lastly, local indie rockers Army Navy (LAist Interview, #2, Review) will be performing at the Troubadour with the Shys and Eastern Conference Champions. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland (surprise!) to catch Highland Park-bred rock outfit Mellowdrone. LAist favorites White Arrows are slated to kick things off.

Tonight In Rock: Sergio Mendes, Dirty Projectors, The Watkins Family Hour, Army Navy

Tonight legendary Brazilian musician Sergio Mendes will be headlining the Hollywood Bowl. Brooklyn's crown jewel, the erratic experimental indie rock collective known as Dirty Projectors (LAist Review), are poised to grace the Troubadour. And, lastly, the Watkins Family Hour (LAist Review) will be taking place at Largo at the Coronet. But we strongly suggest heading over Spaceland to catch local indie rockers Army Navy (LAist Interview, #2, Review), who will be ringing in their latest 7" Fandango. LAist favorites White Arrows are slated to kick things off.

Tonight In Rock: Fountains of Wayne, Metronomy, Army Navy, The Ettes

Tonight LAist's favorite English electro-pop outfit Metronomy (LAist Review) will be headlining the El Rey Theatre with local experimental rockers the Mae Shi (LAist Interview, Review, #2) in tow. LA-based garage rockers the Ettes are coming through Spaceland with the Useless Keys for this week's edition of Club NME. Local indie rockers Army Navy (LAist Interview, #2, Review) will be rocking out for Obama at the Rock the Vote's Inaugural Bash at the Troubadour. And, lastly, Seattle-based experimental electronic quartet Truckasauras are making their LA debut at Boardner's. But we suggest you head over to Largo at the Coronet to catch Northampton-bred power pop act Fountains of Wayne (LAist Interview).

This young moose...er man who is being shot by his band mate is none other than Justin Kennedy the lead singer of Army Navy. Kennedy's history begins in Seattle where he co-lead the band Pinwheel with Ben Gibbard (of Death Cab for Cutie fame.) When Pinwheel came apart, Kennedy headed south to begin again in Los Angeles. Here he put together one of the best brop (brainy pop) outfits in the Southland. His infectious melodies will stick themselves in your head like super glue. They are playing tonight at the Troubadour in support of their stunning debut self-titled album, which was released in October. Mr. Kennedy was kind enough to talk to us yesterday from San Francisco.

There's something for everyone tonight in LA. The big event of the night is, of course, the illustrious Brooklyn-bred rapper Hova performing at the newly-renovated Palladium. But we know that there are a lot of unfortunate souls who missed out on buying tickets to this sold out spectacular. So, Nashville rockers Kings of Leon will be stopping by the Nokia Theatre with Brooklyn-based indie rock band We Are Scientists and Montreal's the Stills. Jacksonville-based Black Kids will be laying down syncopated dance beats at the Mayan with NY indie heartthrobs the Virgins and LA locals Voxhaul Broadcast. And, lastly, if you're looking for grindcore and strange masks, then head on over to see San Diego's the Locust at the Smell. But we suggest camping out at the Echo with local indie greats the Henry Clay People and Army Navy, who will celebrating the release of their 2008 self-titled debut.

Fri 6/9 - Silversun Pickups / Film School @ the Echo ($10) – The Silversun Pickups drop their debut full-length, Carnavas, on July 25th on Dangerbird Records. The record is consistently strong and they're one of the handful of local bands with a really good chance of blowing up this year. Expect to hear a few Smashing Pumpkins comparisons in the reviews (classic Gish/Siamese Dream-era Pumpkins). San Francisco’s Film School frequently gets favorably compared to your favorite Manchester bands.

Although they've been playing the LA music scene for nearly two years and
released an eponymous EP, Army Navy are
probably most recognized for being featured on Fox's hit show, the
    OC.
    They also
have a strong fan base in Seattle, thanks to KEXP.
With influences ranging from British pop to Pacific Northwest post-grunge,
Army Navy strikes that enviable balance of being both instantly familiar and
unique. This particular editor thinks (or at least hopes) the band is on the
verge of breaking... so check them out locally while you can. You'll have bragging rights later.

Army Navy are: Justin Kennedy (vocals, rhythm guitar), Ben Gaffin (bass),
Louie Schultz (keyboards, lead guitar and backup vocals) and Josh Zetumer (drums).

    Upcoming shows:

  • Sunday November 6th at 3 of Clubs with Rum Diary from San Francisco
  • Monday November 7th at Silverlake Lounge with Little One and Fielding
  • Monday November 14th at Detroit Bar with The Color Turning

You asked for it, we listened. Our "essentials" list has a decidedly local flavor now. All bands are either LA-based, LA-natives or playing gigs in the Southland. Some bands are so new that they don't have an EP, MP3 or CD yet. To remedy that, we've linked to their myspace streams and included upcoming tour info so you can catch them locally.

Army Navy | Local Rock
Silvery Sleds [stream]
Although their latest EP is currently out of print, you can hear free streams of Army Navy's music on myspace and their website. Better yet, see them at the Silverlake Lounge on November 7.
Sons and Daughters | Alternative
Dance Me In [download]
Though not LA natives, the band is no stranger to the LA music scene, having just played at Spaceland and the Henry Fonda Theatre. If you missed their live gig, check out this single. It's aggro, addicting and combines rock and electronic sensibilities.
Birdmonster | Local Rock
All The Holes In The Wall [download]
Birdmonster pride themselves on pushing the envelope. This track is a perfect case in point. It's part country, part rock, but decidedly original. Catch Birdmonster for free on October 23 at Spaceland.
Timonium | Local Rock/Psychedelic
Filamented [free download | stream]
This airy track ranges from etherial to murky. The lyrics are often obscured in the musical landscape, but it's ultimately a worthwhile trip. Hear Timonium live on October 25 at Spaceland.
The New Fidelity | Local Powerpop/Alternative
Miss You Like You're Dead [free download | stream]
Catchy guitar rifts are juxtaposed with offbeat lyrics and vocals that are just edgy enough to give the song some punch. This track won't change the world, but it will make you smile and tap your foot. See the band October 25 at the echo.
