Tonight In Rock: Jon Brion, Animal Collective, Passion Pit, Brightblack Morning Light

Tonight, as always, local multi-instrumentalist/producer extraordinaire Jon Brion (LAist Interview, #2, Review) will be jamming with friends at the Largo at the Coronet. Baltimore-based avant-gardists Animal Collective (LAist Review, #2) are headlining a sold-out show at the Wiltern with Portland's own experimental folk songstress Grouper. Montreal-bred DJ/producer Tiga will be gracing the Avalon with James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem opening on the decks. And, lastly, New Mexico-based psych folk rockers Brightblack Morning Light will be sharing the stage at Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock with Brooklyn's own folk songstress Rio En Medio. The irony here, of course, is that the actual Rio En Medio, or "river in between," can be found in New Mexico; perfect pairing. But we strongly suggest doing whatever it takes to get into the Echoplex to catch Cambridge-bred electro-pop outfit Passion Pit (LAist Review). LAist favorites Brooklyn-based indie rockers Harlem Shakes are slated to kick things off.

Week In Rock: Fleetwood Mac, The Prodigy, Animal Collective, Passion Pit

This week legendary British/American rock band Fleetwood Mac will be headlining the Staples Center in Downtown. '90s British electropunk outfit the Prodigy will be making their triumphant return to the Hollywood Palladium. Baltimore-based avant-gardists Animal Collective (LAist Review, #2) are headlining a sold-out show at the Wiltern with Portland's own experimental folk songstress Grouper. And, lastly, Cambridge-bred electro-pop outfit Passion Pit (LAist Review) will be taking LA by storm with two sold-out shows: one at the Troubadour, one at the Echoplex.

On Thursday night at the Henry Fonda Musicbox Theater, Animal Collective played to a sold out audience in support of their recent release, Merriweather Post Pavilion. The concert was a rescheduled performance for a previous postponed date in the month.

Tonight In Rock: Animal Collective, Jon Brion, Everest, Mike Watt & the Secondmen

Tonight Baltimore-based psych rockers Animal Collective will conclude their sold-out two-date stint at the Henry Fonda Music Box, effectively making up for the prior cancellations. Local producer/multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire Jon Brion (LAist Review) is poised to jam with friends at Largo at the Coronet. And, lastly, LAist favorites Mike Watt & the Secondmen will be headlining Spaceland. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Echo to catch local alt-rock heroes Everest (LAist Review, #2). LA-based pop rock outfit the Parson Red Heads (LAist Review, #2, #3) are slated to kick things off.

Tonight Baltimore-based psych rockers Animal Collective will be making up for last month's canceled show at the Henry Fonda Music Box. Hometown noise rock heroes HEALTH are finally back in town, rocking out at the Echo. And, lastly, San Diegan instrumentalists Tristeza will be playing at Bordello with OC's own garage rockers the Growlers. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Troubadour to catch Mississippi-bred ukulele maestro Dent May (LAist Interview). The New Pornographers' front man AC Newman is poised to headline.

Tonight In Rock: Animal Collective, The Raveonettes, Tapes n' Tapes, One Trick Pony

Tonight, if all goes according to planned, Animal Collective (LAist Review) will be performing to a sold-out crowd at the Troubadour—health permitting, of course. Yes, the line-up is inherently inferior to last night's canceled concert. But word on the street is that Friday night's show will be rescheduled for Sunday. Minneapolis-based indie rockers Tapes n' Tapes will take on the El Rey Theatre with Wild Light, who are still tightly clutching their memories of supporting the Arcade Fire way back when. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Henry Fonda Music Box to catch Danish rock duo the Raveonettes, who are slated to headline with none other than LAist favorites the Soft Pack (formerly known as the Muslims) in tow.

Tonight In Rock: O.A.R., Jon Brion, Animal Collective, Department of Eagles

Tonight Maryland-based jam band O.A.R. will be performing at Club Nokia in Downtown. Local producer/musician extraordinaire Jon Brion (LAist Review) is set to pal around with his musical cronies at Largo at the Coronet. Baltimore-based avant-gardists Animal Collective (LAist Review) are headlining a sold-out show at the Henry Fonda Music Box. (Canceled due to a band member's illness!) Memphis' own prolific punk rocker Jay Reatard will be coming through the Echo. But we strongly suggest figuring out a way into the Troubadour, where Department of Eagles are slated play to a sold-out house. Seattle-based folk maestros the Cave Singers will be kicking off the show.

Coachella 2009: Rumored And Confirmed

It is the start of a new year and that means we're slouching towards Southern California's biggest music festivals, starting with Coachella in the middle of April. And, as usual, the internet is simply ablaze with line-up rumors. But this year, much like last, crazed fans have taken things a step further on the festival's message board, going as far as to contact bands directly for confirmation.

Of all the indie bands with some sort of animal in their title, Grizzly Bear might be the top dogs. After all, can Deerhoof, Deerhunter, Caribou, Panda Bear or even Animal Collective claim they are co-headlining a show with the Los Angeles Philharmonic?

I've always been intrigued by other "best of" lists, but this year I decided to take it to a whole new level. I e-mailed a handful of bands that I've seen this past year in order to unearth what exactly captivated them in '07. As music listeners, it is our duty to take a keen interest in our favorite musician's influences. After all, they rocked our little world, might as well see what rocked their...

Artist: Caribou Album: Andorra Label: Merge Records Release Date: August 21, 2007 Hey lookie folks, it's another solo project by a brilliant Canadian. Dan Snaith originally released his work as Manitoba until he ran afoul of the Dictators frontman, Handsome "Dick" Manitoba, and had to change his stage name to...... Caribou. While some of Caribou's first release, The Milk of Human Kindness, sounded somewhat electronica-light, Andorra certainly does not: this is raging full-on psychedelica. Is...

Artist: Animal Collective Album: Strawberry Jam Label: Domino Recording Company Release Date: September 10, 2007 - Today I know there are some folks who hate my reviews so maybe this is the band for you. When I first put this CD on in my car I was pissed because I had thought I'd blown my speakers out - imagine my relief in discovering that my speakers were fine and that it was simply this...

Summer has passed and acts such as Suzanne Vega, Tegan and Sara, M.I.A., Spoon, and Rilo Kiley have reclaimed the spotlight after significant hiatuses, but the year is far from over. It’s now time to look forward to albums on the horizon that look like winners already:

Is anybody driving three hours to the desert for this? Two day passes ($167 + $23 in fees) and Saturday tickets ($86 + $15 in fees) are still available. Most of the rock bands have played LA clubs in the past few months. Otherwise you better really like DJs and house music……
